Abstract

This paper argues that the main objective of the ‘Islamization of knowledge’ project is to assert Muslim ownership over their institutions by developing an alternative system of learning/knowledge production that serves as a foundation for re-inventing/renewing the Islamic traditions to cope with the multitude of challenges that Muslims face today. These challenges stem from a number of intertwining factors that influence this process, including the modern advances that accompanied the colonial and post-colonial developments that shaped and reshaped the intellectual culture and institutions of Muslim and non-Muslim societies precisely by allowing Western methodological approaches to set the agenda and the objectives of the schools. Accordingly, proponents of the Islamization of knowledge such as Naquib al-Atas, Ismail al-Faruqi, Taha Jaber al-Alwani, and others have developed their own different approaches to the production of knowledge and in so doing have generated a philosophical discourse that offers a critique of modern/Western knowledge and its epistemological and methodological assumptions. What, therefore, has been the outcome of the Islamization of knowledge project in terms of producing, for instance, Islamic social sciences, broadly defined, in the areas of, say, economics, sociology, political science, and so on? How have normative teachings of Islam, its ethical concerns, and Muslim efforts to come to terms with modernity (an ideology that carries the values and ideas of triumphant capitalism and secularism) been incorporated into these disciplines to counter or respond to Western hegemony and Eurocentric and orientalist order of knowledge? Finally, have Muslims succeeded in bringing together scholars of the text (fuqaha) and scholars of the context (experts in different fields of knowledge from social sciences to sciences) to deal with pressing modern problems that require new interpretations? This paper will attempt to answer some of these questions.

Abstract

Taking a historiographical approach, this research delves into Japan's history, culture, and education. It aims to uncover the key curricular reforms and societal influences that have contributed to its academic excellence. This study highlights Japan's exceptional academic leadership. It traces it back to historical milestones, academic reforms, societal attitudes, and cultural frameworks. Notably, the Japanese educational model emphasizes principles such as effort, collaboration, problem-solving, and comprehensive education, which have played a significant role in their success. By drawing inspiration from these findings, school policymakers, practitioners, and stakeholders in the Arab and Islamic worlds can consider adopting and adapting elements of the Japanese educational model. This will inform curricular reforms and foster academic excellence. Moreover, this study recognizes the importance of fostering a collaborative exchange of ideas and experiences between Japan and the Arab and Islamic worlds. By embracing Japan's historical lessons and engaging in transformative dialogues, both regions can shape the future of education, promoting deeper understanding and more effective policies. However, it is imperative to acknowledge the limitations of this study, such as the limited sample size, cases, and variations. Therefore, further research is warranted to explore more diverse cases, larger sample sizes, and varied demographics. This will enable us to attain a deeper and more comprehensive understanding that can guide the formulation of appropriate and effective educational policies.

Abstract

This article aims to highlight the core educational/upbringing processes of Islamic Religious Education in Bosnia and Herzegovina maktabs, based on the theoretical framework and qualitative research using interview methods. A short framework of the development and status of maktabs in Bosnia and Herzegovina as basic nonformal institutions of Islamic education among Muslims is provided in the introduction. The aim of the research is to examine the attitudes and experiences of muallims regarding the possibilities of realizing the fundamental areas of religious education/upbringing, and the use of approaches, methods, and forms of religious education of children in maktabs. This part of the research also aims to examine the perceptions of muallims about the importance of the principles of religious upbringing of children. The findings show that through methodical/didactical religious education work with children, it is possible to develop all areas of education and that this process runs simultaneously, building a complete personality of the child. It is also apparent that muallims respect the basic educational principles, with a note that the certain educational principles are difficult to fully implement due to numerous limitations. When it comes to educational approaches and methods, it is evident that the prevalent approach is directed towards positive transformation and the encouragement of pupils, which stimulates the internalization of universal and Islamic values.

In the Reliability Test, Cronbach's alpha Reliability Statistics data of 0.817 > 0.6 shows that the variable instrument of the effectiveness of the ta'lim program is reliable. There is a significant linear relationship between the variable efficacy of the ta'lim program (X) and the variable of strengthening Islamic education (Y) obtained from the significance value of deviation from linearity is 0.203, which means greater than 0.05. The results of this study show that variable X (Effectiveness of ta'lim program) affects variable Y (Strengthening Islamic Education) by 12%, and other things outside the variable influence the additional 88%.

Abstract

This study examines how clinical supervision activities can promote multiculturalism in Indonesia and enhance teacher professionalism. Multicultural education is based on five criteria integrated into clinical supervision activities to improve teacher competence. The goal is to apply multicultural values to education and enhance teacher competency in various areas, such as pedagogy, personality, social skills, and professionalism. The study focuses specifically on two Islamic boarding schools in Ponorogo, East Java, Indonesia. This study uses a qualitative approach for detailed, comprehensive, and in-depth data collection techniques in observation, documentation, interviews, and focused discussions. Based on the findings of the clinical supervision description data through the planning stage, clinical supervision stage, evaluation stage, and follow-up, data analysis techniques using Miles and Huberman are applied, which include data mining, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The study found that clinical supervision activities for teachers in Islamic boarding schools start with planning supervision, followed by microteaching and observation activities to assess teacher learning standards. The development of teacher competency is based on teacher learning preparation, discussions, the teacher as the supervisor of an Islamic boarding school, and the teacher as the main actor in clinical supervision activities. This research highlights the importance of clinical supervision based on multicultural values, as it can enhance pedagogic, personality, social, and professional competencies.

Abstract

A phenomenon that is currently widely discussed is the massive growth of digital creators who are actively sharing unique and popular da'wah concepts, primarily through Islamic animation. The objective of this study is to explore and analyze Islamic animated content on social media and identify the recurring themes found in these contents. The research team collected data by utilizing advanced search features and relevant keywords to locate content that met the specified criteria. Between June 2022 and June 2023, the research team evaluated a total of 5,000 pieces of content sourced from various virtual communities on Indonesia's prominent social media platforms, namely Instagram and YouTube. The first two rounds of evaluation focused on identifying qualitatively significant themes, while rounds 3 to 4 expanded on the initial findings for each social media platform. Employing the Netnography method for analysis, four distinct themes emerged from all Islamic animated content on social media: "Ustadz in Animation," "Life Advice," "Stories of Prophets and Apostles," and "Indonesian Muslim Children."

Epistemologically, knowledge can be obtained through the optimization of reason. Hence, the mujahadah and the riyadhah are tasks that must be undertaken by students in order to secure the knowledge of mukasyafah. In terms of axiology, knowledge is a means to get closer to Allah, to gain happiness in the world and the hereafter. That is why the profile of the learning outcome of sufi education is ulama' akhirat; namely scholars who have the following characteristics; ‘abid, zahid, ‘alim, faqih and mukhlish.
