Abstract

The problem in this study is the low learning outcomes of students in science learning, which is still dominated by teacher-centered methods. This research aims to determine the effect of applying the guided inquiry learning model on the learning outcomes of eighth-grade students at SMPN 2 Kupang on the topic of the human excretory system. The study employed a quasi-experimental method with a Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The sample consisted of class VIII D (experimental, n=32) using the guided inquiry model and class VIII E (control, n=32) using direct instruction. Learning outcomes data were collected through pretest and posttest, and analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality test, homogeneity test, and ANCOVA. The results showed that the average N-Gain of the experimental class was 0.63 (high category) and the control class was 0.50 (medium category). The ANCOVA test obtained a significance value of 0.002 < 0.05, indicating a significant effect of the guided inquiry model on learning outcomes. The study concludes that guided inquiry learning can significantly improve student learning outcomes in the human excretory system topic.

Abstract

Traditional knowledge of medicinal plants is an essential part of local wisdom that needs to be preserved and integrated into biology education. However, in the era of modernization, this knowledge is increasingly marginalized and rarely documented systematically, which may lead to its gradual disappearance. This study aimed to explore the types of medicinal plants used by the Weol community in Wae Belang Village, Ruteng District, Manggarai Regency, and to develop them into a biology learning medium in the form of a booklet. The research was conducted in May 2024 using a qualitative approach through interviews, observations, documentation, and plant identification. The research sample consisted of community members with knowledge and experience in utilizing medicinal plants, selected using purposive sampling. The results revealed 32 species of medicinal plants belonging to 20 families, with leaves being the most widely used plant part. The collected data were then developed into a booklet and validated by material and media experts. Validation results showed an average score of 94.77%, categorized as highly valid, indicating that the booklet is feasible for use as a biology learning medium. The study concludes that a local wisdom-based booklet can serve as an effective and contextual educational tool while supporting the preservation of traditional knowledge. Future research is recommended to conduct classroom trials to evaluate the effectiveness of the booklet in improving students’ learning outcomes and motivation.

Abstract

Knowledge of the use of medicinal plants by the people of Lorotolus Village, Wewiku District, Malaka Regency remains limited and is only known by a small group within the community. This study aimed to (1) identify medicinal plant species used by the community to treat human diseases, (2) determine the plant parts utilized, (3) describe the methods of preparation, and (4) develop a booklet of medicinal plants as a biology learning medium. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach combined with research and development using a modified ADDIE model consisting of three stages: analysis, design, and development. Data were collected through interviews and documentation, then analyzed descriptively. The results identified 14 medicinal plant species, including Chromolaena odorata, Allium sativum, Piper betle, Psidium guajava, and Moringa oleifera. The most commonly used part was the leaf, while preparation methods included boiling, chewing, grinding, infusing, soaking, squeezing, and direct consumption. The developed booklet was validated by media and material experts, yielding feasibility scores of 80% and 72.5%, respectively, thus categorized as valid and feasible for use as a biology learning medium. This research highlights the importance of documenting local traditional knowledge to preserve it while utilizing it as a learning resource based on local wisdom.

Abstract

Mammals have two main mechanisms for maintaining body temperature: physiological and behavioral mechanisms. Rabbits, as members of the family Leporidae, are endothermic animals that are sensitive to changes in environmental temperature, making body temperature measurements important for assessing their physiological adaptation in captivity. This study aimed to analyze the comparison between environmental temperature and rectal temperature of male and female rabbits at two different locations in East Java, namely Malang City and Malang Regency. The research employed a quantitative approach, collecting rectal temperature data using a digital thermometer and environmental temperature data using an HTC-2 thermometer. Measurements were taken twice daily, in the morning and afternoon, over one month in May 2024. The results showed that the environmental temperature in Malang City (27.0–27.7?°C) was higher than in Malang Regency (22.6–25.3?°C), but both remained within the rabbits’ physiological tolerance limits. The rectal temperature of male and female rabbits ranged from 36.6–38.4?°C, which is still considered normal. T-Test analysis indicated significant differences in environmental temperature (p = 0.018–0.026) and rectal temperature (p = 0.002–0.050) between the two locations. It was concluded that both Malang City and Malang Regency are suitable for rabbit breeding, with the recommendation that future studies should take into account humidity, cage type, and a larger sample size for more comprehensive analysis.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the perceptions of students at SMP Negeri 6 Lubuklinggau regarding the diversity of vertebrate animals, focusing on three aspects: knowledge, attitude, and behavior. The research employed a descriptive quantitative method with the population consisting of all seventh and eighth-grade students in the 2024/2025 academic year. Data were collected using a closed-ended questionnaire designed around the three main aspects, and were analyzed by calculating the mean score and percentage through simple frequency distribution. The results show that the overall average score of students’ perceptions is 3.34 with a percentage of 83.55%, categorized as very good. In terms of knowledge, students demonstrated a strong understanding of the basic classification of vertebrates (highest score 3.55), though many still struggled to distinguish characteristics among different groups (3.19). For attitudes, students responded positively to learning, particularly appreciating the enjoyable teaching methods used by teachers (3.52), although some still found vertebrate concepts difficult to grasp (3.19). Regarding behavior, students showed empathy by having experiences of helping injured animals (3.41), but relatively few had opportunities to observe vertebrates directly outside of school (3.27). Overall, the findings indicate that students’ perceptions of vertebrate diversity are highly positive. However, improvements are still needed through the use of visual media, field observations, and guidance in utilizing credible digital learning resources.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the feasibility of virus posters as learning media for grade X students based on the validation results of material experts and learning media experts. This study is a development research using the ADDIE model. Data collection was carried out using a questionnaire technique. The instruments used were material expert validation sheets and learning media expert validation sheets. The validators of material experts and learning media experts involved in this study were one lecturer each with expertise in the field of viruses and the field of biology learning media development. The data collected were in the form of scores and suggestions from both validators, which were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the developed virus poster met the criteria for feasibility with moderate revisions based on the results of material expert validation (average score of 76.00); and met the criteria for feasibility with minor revisions based on the results of learning media expert validation (average score of 89.09). This indicates that the developed virus poster is suitable for use as a learning media for grade X students.
