The paper concludes that bridging the gap between theory and implementation of national language policy in Nigeria is a complex but a necessary and essential national task that involves the government allocating resources to produce adequate instructional materials and training teachers to be qualified in teaching indigenous languages. Also government and stakeholders should intensify efforts outside the classroom, preserving mother tongue and revitalizing endangered languages requires a multifaceted approach that extends well beyond the classroom, which involves fostering a cultural environment where the language is valued and used in daily life, creating intergenerational connections, leveraging technology and documenting linguistic resources.

This research aims to investigate the prevalence of Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety (FLCA) within the context of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) program. The study involved 13 participants enrolled in an ESP program at an English private course in Yogyakarta, with ages ranging from 16 to 33 years. Data was collected using a Google Form questionnaire comprising 33 items adapted from the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) developed by Horwitz, Howitz, and Cope (1986). The results revealed that a solitary participant maintained a relaxed disposition during class, while the majority of learners reported experiencing mild to elevated levels of FLCA. Communication apprehension emerged as the predominant contributor to FLCA, with fear of negative evaluation ranking as the second most influential factor. In contrast, test anxiety was identified as the least consequential factor impacting the participants’ levels of FLCA.

Abstract

Critical literacy becomes increasingly known in the EFL context because it plays a significant role in encouraging the learners to think critically about the linguistic hierarchy, to be aware of cultural domination, and to develop their voice in social justice within the target language. Despite this, many EFL teachers and teachers-educators are still unfamiliar with how it is enacted. The abstract tenets of critical theory and the nature of critical practice cause this unfamiliarity. In this paper, the researchers elaborate on some books, articles, and previous research to assist the teachers in understanding the complexity of critical literacy practice and to propose the appropriate practical steps for implementing critical literacy. The teachers can follow these practical steps in their EFL reading classroom. First, appropriate teaching materials are reviewed. Second, the teaching strategy to implement critical literacy is discussed. Third, practical ways of applying critical literacy are proposed in this practical framework.
