Abstract

Perineal wounds due to spontaneous tears or episiotomy are common conditions experienced by postpartum mothers and have the potential to cause complications if not properly cared for. Low knowledge and compliance of postpartum mothers in performing perineal wound care remains a problem in primary health care. This study aims to analyze the effect of perineal wound care education on the level of knowledge and compliance of postpartum mothers at the Laiwui Community Health Center, South Halmahera. The study used a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach. The study sample consisted of 40 postpartum mothers with perineal wounds and were selected using a total sampling technique. The intervention in the form of perineal wound care education was provided in a structured manner through counseling, leaflets, and live demonstrations. The level of knowledge and compliance was measured before and after the intervention using a standardized questionnaire. Data analysis was performed univariately and bivariately using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The results showed an increase in the level of knowledge and compliance of postpartum mothers after being provided with education. The Wilcoxon test showed a significant difference between knowledge levels before and after education (p < 0.05), as well as a significant difference in postpartum maternal compliance (p < 0.05). It can be concluded that perineal wound care education has a significant effect on increasing postpartum maternal knowledge and compliance. Structured and applicable education is recommended to be integrated as part of the standard postpartum care in primary health care to support maternal recovery and prevent postpartum complications.

Abstract

Anemia during pregnancy is a public health issue that remains a challenge in developing countries, including Indonesia. Iron tablets are recommended as the primary intervention to prevent anemia, but compliance among pregnant women in taking iron tablets varies and is influenced by various factors, including health worker counseling. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the intensity of cadre assistance and the level of compliance with TTD consumption among pregnant women at the Tomalou Community Health Center, Tidore Kepulauan City. The study design used an observational analytical approach with a cross-sectional method. The study sample consisted of 30 pregnant women selected using total sampling technique. The independent variable was the intensity of cadre assistance, while the dependent variable was the level of compliance with TTD consumption. Data were collected using observation sheets, consumption monitoring forms, and respondent identity questionnaires, then analyzed using Spearman's rank correlation test at a significance level of 0.05. The results showed that most respondents were compliant in consuming TTD, but there was no significant relationship between the intensity of cadre assistance and the level of compliance with TTD consumption (r = 0.036; p = 0.848). This study concluded that the frequency of assistance alone was not sufficient to influence TTD consumption compliance, thus requiring a more comprehensive, educational assistance approach that involved family support. These findings could form the basis for evaluating the cadre assistance program in preventing anemia in pregnant women.

Abstract

Anxiety in laboring mothers is a psychological factor that can influence the course of labor, particularly during the second stage, and increase the risk of complications such as perineal rupture. Along with obstetric factors, the quality of labor guidance is crucial in preventing perineal trauma. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between maternal anxiety, labor guidance, and the incidence of perineal rupture at Obi Hospital, South Halmahera. Using an observational analytical design with a cross-sectional approach, the study involved 50 laboring mothers undergoing vaginal delivery, selected through purposive sampling. Data collection took place from February to April 2024, with maternal anxiety measured using a standardized anxiety questionnaire. Labor guidance and perineal rupture were assessed through observation sheets and clinical examinations. Data analysis was conducted univariately and bivariately using the Chi-Square test with a significance level of p < 0.05. The results showed a significant relationship between maternal anxiety and labor guidance (p < 0.05), as well as between maternal anxiety and perineal rupture (p < 0.05). Additionally, labor guidance was significantly associated with the incidence of perineal rupture (p < 0.05). Mothers with higher anxiety levels tended to receive poor labor guidance and had a higher risk of perineal rupture. The study concludes that maternal anxiety significantly impacts labor guidance and perineal rupture, emphasizing the need for holistic care that addresses both psychological and physical aspects of childbirth.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the effect of infant massage on growth and development among infants attending Puskesmas Bongo II. Infant massage is recognized as a form of sensory stimulation that enhances neural function, improves blood circulation, and strengthens maternal–infant bonding, thereby potentially supporting optimal physical growth and developmental progress. This research employed an analytic cross-sectional design involving infants aged 0–12 months, with a total sample of 50 infants selected using purposive sampling based on predefined inclusion criteria. Information regarding infant massage practices was collected through structured maternal interviews and categorized into routine massage (≥3 times per week) and non-routine massage. Infant growth was assessed using the weight-for-age (W/A) indicator based on WHO growth standards, while development was measured using the Developmental Pre-Screening Questionnaire (KPSP). Data were analyzed using the chi-square test with a 95% confidence level (p < 0.05). The results showed that infants who received routine massage demonstrated significantly better growth status and developmental outcomes compared to those who did not receive massage routinely. These findings suggest that infant massage is a simple, safe, and practical intervention that can be recommended to support growth and development and may be integrated into maternal and child health services at Puskesmas Bongo II.

Abstract

Infant anxiety following routine immunizations, such as DPT vaccination, can lead to distress, prolonged crying, and negative behavioral responses, affecting both the child and caregivers. Non-pharmacological interventions, including aromatherapy, have been explored to alleviate such anxiety. This study aimed to examine the effect of lavender aromatherapy inhalation on anxiety levels in infants after DPT immunization at Puskesmas Rum Balibunga Tidore. A quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test measurements was employed, involving 30 infants aged 2–6 months. Anxiety was assessed using a validated observational scale, focusing on behavioral indicators such as crying duration, facial expressions, and body movements. Lavender essential oil was administered via inhalation for five minutes immediately after immunization. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests to evaluate changes in anxiety scores before and after the intervention. The results demonstrated a significant reduction in infant anxiety following lavender inhalation, with mean scores decreasing from 14.5 ± 2.8 to 9.3 ± 2.1 (p < 0.001). Behavioral indicators, including the frequency and duration of crying, were also markedly reduced, supporting the effectiveness of the intervention. These findings align with prior research indicating that lavender essential oil can modulate the autonomic nervous system, promoting relaxation and reducing stress responses. In conclusion, inhalation of lavender aromatherapy effectively decreases post-immunization anxiety in infants. Incorporating this intervention into routine vaccination procedures at community health centers offers a safe, non-invasive, and culturally acceptable method to improve infant comfort and enhance the overall immunization experience.

Abstract

Anemia in pregnancy remains a common public health problem and may lead to adverse outcomes for both the mother and the fetus, highlighting the need for effective and practical interventions. This study aimed to analyze the effect of cassava leaf (Manihot esculenta) consumption on hemoglobin levels among second-trimester pregnant women at UPT Puskesmas Rum Balibunga. A quasi-experimental study with a pretest–posttest design without a control group was conducted. The sample consisted of 30 second-trimester pregnant women with mild anemia, selected using purposive sampling. The intervention involved daily consumption of cassava leaves for 14 consecutive days. Hemoglobin levels were measured before and after the intervention using standardized examination tools. The results demonstrated a significant increase in hemoglobin levels following cassava leaf consumption, with a mean increase of 1.2 g/dL. These findings suggest that cassava leaves, which are rich in iron, vitamin C, and protein, can enhance hemoglobin synthesis and serve as a local food-based nutritional intervention. Therefore, cassava leaf consumption can be recommended as an alternative or complementary strategy for preventing and managing anemia among second-trimester pregnant women in primary healthcare settings.

Abstract

Globally, preterm childbirth is the main cause of the increase in the number of illnesses and deaths in the perinatal period. The occurrence of premature birth is triggered by various factors, one of which is the psychological stress experienced by the mother during pregnancy. This study aims to determine the relationship between the level of stress in pregnant women and the chance of premature delivery. This observational study with a cross-sectional design involved one hundred women pregnant in the third trimester at Obi Halmahera hospital. Stress levels were measured using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), while data related to preterm labor were obtained through medical records. The findings of the study showed a significant relationship between the level of stress of pregnant women and the risk of giving birth before the gestational age was sufficient (p<0.05). Pregnant women who experience high stress are more likely to give birth prematurely compared to those with lower stress levels. In conclusion, stress control efforts in pregnant women are an important component in antenatal services to reduce the risk of premature birth.

Abstract

Sleep disturbances may be encountered by third-trimester gravid women owing to perceptual vicissitudes and physiological-psychological perturbations. Sleep caliber may be detrimentally impacted by depression precipitated by such gestational alterations. A quantitative correlational paradigm was harnessed in this inquiry to appraise the nexus betwixt gestational sleep quality and depressive symptomatology. The study cohort encompassed the entirety of pregnant women, from whom 41 were randomly conscripted. Kendall's tau-b correlational scrutiny yielded a coefficient of 0.649 and p-value of 0.000 (<0.05), evincing a robust, statistically salient association between prenatal sleep eminence and depression. Ergo, diminished sleep repose is characteristically observed among gravid women manifesting depressive states.
