Abstract

The waters off the northern coast of Central Java are part of Fisheries Management Area (FMA) 712, which is characterized by high levels of fishing activity and complex oceanographic dynamics. Variations in Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a play a crucial role in determining primary productivity and potential fishing grounds. This current study seeks to investigate the spatial and temporal variability of SST and Chlorophyll-a, along with investigating the correlation between both parameters using Himawari-8 satellite imagery. The research method employed is quantitative descriptive, utilizing secondary satellite imagery data from the 2023–2025 period. Data analysis is conducted thru digital image processing, which includes the stages of pixel value extraction, data cleaning from cloud cover, and the calculation of monthly average values to represent seasonal changes. The Spearman rho correlation statistical test is applied to determine the strength and direction of the relationship between SPL and chlorophyll-a over time. The results indicate that SST and Chlorophyll-a at the study site fluctuate following seasonal patterns. Spatially, chlorophyll-a concentrations tend to be higher in coastal areas than in offshore areas. Correlation analysis indicates a strong negative conection between SST and chlorophyll-a, with a correlation coefficient of -0.713, suggesting that an increase in sea surface temperature is typically followed by a decrease in chlorophyll-a concentrations in the waters off northern Central Java

Abstract

The capture fisheries sector requires data-based management to support the sustainability of fishery resources. One of the efforts is the implementation of fishing logbooks as regulated in the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Regulation No. 33 of 2021. This study aims to analyze fishermen’s perception of the implementation of fishing logbooks among danish seine fishermen. The research was conducted from December 2025 to January 2026 at Kluwut Fishing Port, Brebes Regency. This study used a mixed method approach with data collection techniques including observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out using Likert scale, validity and reliability tests, and multiple linear regression with SPSS. The results showed that fishermen’s perception of logbook implementation was in the moderate category with a value of 51%. Regression analysis indicated that knowledge of logbook regulations, logbook filling procedures, and E-logbook usage significantly influenced knowledge of logbook benefits. The main constraints faced by fishermen include low technological literacy and limited use of digital devices and internet networks in supporting E-logbook implementation.

Abstract

The Bali Strait (FMA 573) is a critical fishing ground and primary habitat for Bali sardinella (Sardinella lemuru), a small pelagic species under increasing exploitation pressure from traditional fishing fleets. However, studies integrating fishing ground characteristics, oceanographic influences, and exploitation status at PPI Kedonganan remain limited. This study aimed to characterize fishing grounds, assess the influence of oceanographic parameters (SST and chlorophyll-a) on fish production, and evaluate the exploitation status of S. lemuru landed at PPI Kedonganan, Bali. Data were collected from February to April 2025 using simple random sampling (n = 1,882 for length-weight analysis; n = 256 for sex ratio). Fishing ground characterization was conducted through participatory mapping. SST and chlorophyll-a data were obtained from Aqua MODIS satellite imagery (2020–2024) and correlated with monthly production data using Pearson correlation analysis. Exploitation status was estimated using the Length-Based Spawning Potential Ratio (LB-SPR) method. This result known that fishing grounds were concentrated within the coastal zone at 1–3 nautical miles from shore, operated by traditional vessels (<5 GT) using purse seine, gillnet, and lift net with mesh sizes of 1–1.5 inches. A weak negative correlation was found between SST and fish production (r = −0.359, p > 0.05) and a very weak positive correlation between chlorophyll-a and production (r = 0.135, p > 0.05), both governed by monsoon dynamics and upwelling. Biological parameters confirmed dominance of immature individuals: negative allometric growth (b = 2.9358; R² = 0.9297), mean condition factor K = 1.01, balanced sex ratio (1:1), and length at first capture (Lc = 13.92 cm) below length at first maturity (Lm = 17.3 cm). LB-SPR analysis yielded SPR = 6%, classifying the stock as over-exploited — a cumulative consequence of coastal fishing grounds, non-selective gear, and intensive capture of pre-spawning individuals. Management interventions are urgently needed, including minimum mesh size regulations and periodic stock monitoring through the LB-SPR approach.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the household economic dynamics and adaptation strategies employed by hand line fishers in response to seasonal changes affecting pelagic fish catches in Donggala Regency, Central Sulawesi. A total of 30 fishers operating from the Boneoge and Labuan Bajo landing sites were involved as respondents using a survey method with descriptive quantitative and qualitative approaches. The quantitative approach was applied to analyze differences in household income between the fishing season and the lean season using a paired-sample t-test. Meanwhile, the qualitative approach sought to explore in depth the various forms of socio-economic adaptation implemented by fishers due to seasonal changes in their fishing activities. Qualitative data were collected through in-depth interviews and field observations to understand household adaptation mechanisms, social networking practices, and the utilization of local institutions. The findings reveal that the average monthly household income of fishers declined sharply from IDR 5,790,000 during the fishing season to IDR 2,890,000 during the lean season, with a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05). This income reduction prompted fishers to adopt various adaptive strategies, including livelihood diversification, household financial management, and the strengthening of social ties among fishers. Household economic resilience was further supported by social adaptation practices based on mutual cooperation (gotong royong) and the use of local institutions. These results underscore that strengthening adaptive fisheries policies and socio-economically based management of pelagic fish resources is essential to enhance the adaptive capacity and livelihood sustainability of coastal communities.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the species composition of gillnet catches, both with and without the use of a light fishing aid; to prove that the use of light fishing on gillnets increases the catch weight; and to determine the net position relative to the light source that produces the highest catch weight. The type of light fishing used in this study for gillnet fishing was an underwater submersible lamp (LACUBA). This research employed the Experimental Fishing method, with four setting operation conducted, while hauling and sorting were carried out after a soaking time of approximately ± 8 hours. The results showed that the fish caught during gillnet operations were divided into two groups: the Main Catch (HTU) and Bycatch (HTS). The HTU group consisted of 2 species of large pelagic fish with a total weight of 169,653 kg. The HTS group consisted of 5 species with a total weight of 59,466 kg. Statistical analysis proved that catches obtained using nets with lights (JDL) were heavier than those obtained using nets without lights (JTL), meaning that the use of light fishing on gillnets significantly increased the catch weight. Statistical testing also demonstrated a significant difference in catch results based on the net position relative to the light source. Fish catches from JDL during the study were distributed across all net panels. The non-parametric Kruskal–Wallis test showed that the distance between the light and the net affected gillnet catches, with an asymp. sig value of 0.002 ≤ 0.05.

Abstract

The coral reef ecosystem in Wambitema Waters, Tanah Merah Bay, Jayapura Regency, plays an important role in supporting reef fisheries resources and marine ecotourism activities. Sustainable management of coral reef ecosystems is required to maintain ecological balance while supporting fisheries and tourism utilization. This study aimed to analyze the suitability and carrying capacity of coral reef ecosystem areas to support sustainable fisheries management and marine ecotourism in Wambitema Waters. The study was conducted using coral reef fish observations through underwater visual census (UVC), assessment of marine tourism suitability using the Tourism Suitability Index (TSI), and environmental carrying capacity analysis. The parameters measured included coral cover, reef fish abundance, life form diversity, water clarity, depth, and current velocity. The results identified 415 species of coral reef fish belonging to 36 families, indicating high biodiversity and relatively healthy coral reef ecosystem conditions. The suitability analysis showed that the study area was categorized as highly suitable (S1) for diving activities with an IKW value of 2.63, and suitable to highly suitable for snorkeling activities with an IKW value of 2.42. The environmental carrying capacity value was estimated at 809 visitors/day, while the effective utilization carrying capacity recommended for sustainable management was 81 visitors/day for each activity. These findings indicate that Wambitema Waters have strong potential for integrated management of fisheries resources and marine ecotourism based on conservation principles, environmental carrying capacity, and sustainable utilization of coral reef ecosystems.
