Abstract

Bottom gillnet is a fishing gear which is operated in the morning, afternoon, and evening in the waters around Lebetawi Village. However, there is limited information about the specific composition of catch, especially the differences of catch between coral and seagrass areas. The aim of this study is to compare the number of catches from coral and seagrass areas and how the fish were first caught. The research was conducted for two months, from December 2023 to January 2024, in the waters of Lebetawi Village, Tual City, Southeast Maluku Regency. Data was collected from precisely observation on bottom gillnet aperated at seagrass and coral habitatss. The catches consisted of 18 species, with total 220 individuals fish and weight 34,161.18 grams. Throughout the fishing operations at both habitats, all demersal and pelagic fish were captured by way of gilled and wedged.

Abstract

Sasi is customary regulation which is applied to protect natural resources in land and ocean. Commercial topshell, Rochia nilotica, is a gastropod and is one of protected marine resources by sasi. There were numerous studies about sasi but the choice of R. nilotica as sasi priority in Maluku has not been concerned yet. The aim of this study is to answer the question: “Why do R. nilotica become the sasi priority in Maluku?” This study was obtained from literature reviews regarding sasi after attending the ceremonial of “buka Sasi” in Rutong village, Ambon and from interviewing several respondents from the local people. Mostly the respondents answered that R. nilotica has high economic value and has to be protected from overfishing. From the literature review, life cycle of R. nilotica does not showing any specificity and its natural abundance is not alarmed. Nevertheless, because of its large in size, long lived, late maturity and easily habitat accessible, R. nilotica is vulnerable to overfishing. Four years duration of sasi is sufficient to increase R. nilotica abundance and stabilize its population.

Abstract

Arumbai Market in Ambon City, Maluku Province, is a central hub for the trade of fishery products, particularly groupers. This study aims to describe the origin of grouper catches and to identify the species and sizes of groupers marketed at Arumbai Market. Groupers, which belong to the family Serranidae, are the primary predators in coral reef ecosystems. Fish identification was conducted based on Allen's guide and verified through FishBase. The study was conducted from December 2022 to February 2023 using a survey method through direct observation and interviews. Data were analyzed descriptively and presented in tables and graphs. The results showed that groupers at Arumbai Market come from four main locations: Manipa (34.47%), Liang (26.81%), Latuhalat (24.26%), and Pulau Tiga (14.47%). Eight dominant species of groupers in this market are Variola albimarginata (44.64%), Cephalopholis miniata (20.60%), Epinephelus fasciatus (12.45%), Epinephelus ongus (6.44%), Cephalopholis urodeta (6.44%), Cephalopholis sonnerati (5.58%), Epinephelus areolatus (3.00%), and Epinephelus fuscoguttatus (0.86%). Grouper sizes vary, with Cephalopholis miniata having a maximum size of 27.1 cm and a minimum size of 19.9 cm. This study provides essential information on the origin of catches, species dominance, and sizes of groupers marketed, which can serve as a basis for better fishery management. These findings indicate a significant potential for grouper trade in the region and highlight the importance of sustainable management to preserve the continuity of coral reef ecosystems and grouper populations.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the catches of tuna landed at the Ambon Nusantara Fisheries Port. The research was conducted for two months, from January to February 2023, using descriptive methods. Primary data was collected through direct observation and interviews with fishermen and port officers, while secondary data was obtained from PPN Ambon. The results of this research show that the catch was landed by four fishing fleets, namely purse seines, gill nets, fish trawls and lines fishing. The total catch landed during the 2012-2021 period was 510,203 tons, which was dominated by Auxis thazard. Purse seines are the most dominant fishing gear used, contributing 52.1% of the total catch with a total fishing effort of 597 trips. The productivity of the fishing fleet fluctuates from year to year, the lowest productivity for Euthynnus affinis occurred in 2018 and the highest in 2013, while the lowest productivity forl Auxis thazard occurred in 2017 and the highest in 2018. Fluctuating and low productivity indicates the existence of potential for overfishing. This research suggests the need for further analysis regarding the potential and level of utilization of the two species of frigate tuna landed in PPN Ambon

Abstract

The use of gill nets in fishing is a well-established practice among fishermen due to several factors including ease of material acquisition, simple operational techniques, relatively affordable costs, and high selectivity in catching fish of specific sizes. This study aims to describe the design of fishing gill nets in Inner Ambon Bay. The research was conducted at the Ambon Fisheries Training and Extension Center (BP) in April and May of 2024. The design and construction of surface gillnets for mackerel scad consist of mesh size (inches), fish body circumference, net length, hanging ratio, weights, and distance between floats and weights. The design of the surface gill net with a 2-inch mesh size and a 45% hanging ratio has proven to be effective in catching mackerel scad (Decapterus sp) ranging from 17 cm to 26 cm in length. The use of polyamide (PA) material for the net body provides the necessary strength and flexibility, while the float made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and lead weights ensures balanced distribution for optimal functioning in the water. A 45% hanging ratio provides an ideal balance between net length and fish trapping ability, avoiding nets that are too curved or stiff, which can reduce fishing effectiveness.
