Abstract

Tablighi Jamaat is one of the largest Muslim organization in the world. Despite lacking formal form of organization like other Islamic organization in general, the members of the Tablighi Jamaat is well known for their loyalty and discipline in implementing the principles of the organization, especially regarding the organizations’ guidelines on conducting da’wa to Muslims with different religious background such as madhab affiliation. This paper, therefore, aims at explaining the strategy of performing da’wa applied by the Tablighi Jamaat in plural social settings. Findings suggest that the Tablighi Jamaat utilized the notion of equality as its most important principle of da’wa. The idea of equality is actualized through several mechanism like madhab fluidation, desacralization of madhab and demadhabization. In this context, every member of the Tablighi Jamaat has the same opportunity to be da’I (preacher) as well as to be mad’u (audience). Keywords: Tablighi Jamaat, Strategy of Da’wa, Desacralization, Demadhabization and Madhab Fluidation.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to find out the most effective strategy to conduct Da’wa in the setting of tarekat society. Tarekat Qadariyah wa Naqsabandiyah is used as a case to examine such strategy in practice. This paper argued that transformative Da’wa as a distinctive method of preaching Islam suit the needs and demands of the tarekat society. Most of the members of tarekat come mainly from rural areas where they already have their intensive Islamic education in Islamic boarding schools (Pondok Pesantren) thus the need for enrichment in terms of Islamic teachings is relatively low. However, this paper suggest that what these people need the most is capacity building in terms of economic and political skill since those skillsets areimportant for the success in life. By becoming successful in life in the world, the main objective of Tarekat Qadariyah wa Naqsabandiyah, which is to create balance between spiritual and practical life in this world, could be fulfilled. Keywords: Da’wa, transformative Da’wa, tarekat, Qadiriyah wa Naqsabandiyah.

Hate speech is among the most vicious problem faced by Muslims in the world. As Muslims are obliged to perform the principle of al amr bi al ma’ruf wa tanhawna anil munkar (commanding right and forbidding evil), what perceived as hate speech sometimes overlaps such basic tenet of Islamic principle of commanding right and forbidding wrong. The aim of this research is therefore twofold. First, it explore the contruction of hate speech among Da’is (Islamic preachers) in traditional Islamic boarding schools in East Kalimantan. And Seccondly, it explores ideal responses toward such practices as perceived by those Da’is. Findings suggest that the construction of hate speeches and ideal responses towerds it, among Da’is in Islamic traditional boarding schools known as pondok pesantrens, is founded mostly upon the principle of potential damage of those hate speech practices. Keywords: Hate speech, Islamic Da’wa, and Da’is in East Kalimantan.

Advancements in the area of information and communication technology have changed the very basis of human interactions, including the way people make sense of reality. The presence of cyberspace as a second life of humans, according to Mark Slouka, has led to three different understandings of reality, namely: destopian which views pessimistically, optimistic neofuturists, and more critical techno-realists. In this paper, the author will present one reflection on cyberspace displayed in a Movie by Wally Pfister called "Transcendence". Abstract

The link between religion and cyberspace has become a necessity in the cyber era. The internet, in this case social media, changes many patterns and forms of communication. Social media has become a massive channel used by Indonesian preachers for the past decade or so. Da'wah on social media presents a number of challenges and opportunities, especially when dealing with millennials as majority users. This study intends to describe the phenomenon of da'wah on social media among millennial Muslims. This research is a descriptive qualitative research with literature study as a data collection method. The conclusion of this study is that there are three main points in viewing da'wa, millennial Muslims and social media. First, the character of millennial generation who tend to be out of the box and always connected to the internet more or less changes the da'wah landscape in Indonesia. They slowly leave the conventional da'wa, both in terms of theme and method choices. The popularity Hanan Attaki’s da’wah became one of the markers. Secondly, social media despite having a positive contribution to da'wah but also left a number of notes that demand attention, such as prejudice, easy spread of hate speech, reluctance to access primary sources and quality filter problems. Third, looking at millennial generations who have the characteristics of tolerance, pluralism and being able to appreciate diversity brings opportunities for the development of moderate Islamic da'wah in Indonesia. Keywords: da’wah, millenial, social media

Abstract

Nowadays, dakwah is perceived merely as a process of communicating Islamic teachings. If we take a closer look into the life of the Prophet Muhammad, we can safely assume that dakwah is more than just a process of communicating Islamic teachings from some person to others. Prophet Muhammad dedicated most of his life preparing for da’wa even though the moral state of his people at that time, the Arabs of Mecca was in dire need of guidance. This paper talks about several pre-prophethood events as narrated by many Muslim historians. Through historical approach and inductive reasoning, such events are analysed to reveal their relation with dakwah of the prophet. Findings in this paper reveal that the life of the prophet Muhammad before he became prophet constituted vital role for the dakwah he undertook later on. Prophet’s dakwah also focused more on issues of hereafter and less on issues of halal and haram. Keywords: Arabs, Da’wa, Pre-prophethood
