Abstract

Muslim women who wear cadar (full face veil) can not explore all forms of non-verbal signs, especially facial expression, while involved in conversation since they can not show their face. However, they have developed strategy to overcome such obstacles. Muslim women who wear cadar create their own pattern of communication to allow them to have distinct rules on how to communicate among themselves. This paper, thus, aims at revealing the patterns of communication of Muslim women who wear cadar through utilizing ethnograpy of communication approach. Findings of this paper signifies that (1) women in this group wear cadar to signify that they are already enlightened in terms of religious obligations, (2) wearing cadar allows them to escape stigmas while involved in communication, and (3) unlike Indonesians in general, members of this group encourage eye contact while involved in conversations and rely on it to enlarge their chances of having meaningful conversations. Keywords: ethnography of communication, non-verbal language.

Abstract

The 2019 election is so special, apart from the rising political temperature in Indonesia, the elections is also like a rematch of the 2014 elections that brought together two strong candidates, Joko Widodo and Prabowo Subianto as presidential candidates. Each candidate collides with ideas to win public sympathy and influence voter behavior through political advertising. This study will examine the ideas of Jokowi and Prabowo's government through political advertising. The advertisement that will be used as the main analytical material in this paper is political advertising on social media through the Youtube platform, namely the Sarjana Kerja Kerja Kerja! and the advertisement of Arwah si Manis Jembatan Ancur. Findings suggest that in packaging the ideas related to their campaign programs, each candidate has different communication styles and approaches. Sarjana Kerja Kerja Kerja! contains criticism of Indonesia Kerja slogan. This advertisement conveys reality criticism that is not in accordance with Jokowi's Nawacita expectations and offers solutions to changes in the economic system, prosperous, and independent Indonesia. Whereas through the political campaign si Manis Jembatan Ancur, a message was found on the success of infrastructure development in the Jokowi era which was not only focused on big cities but also to remote villages as illustrated in the background of the advertisement. In this advertisement there is a campaign content where one of them is the figure of cleric who has many similarities with Jokowi's vice-presidential candidate, K.H. Ma'ruf Amin is synonymous with santri. Key Words; Semiotics, Sanders Pierce, Political Campaign, Jokowi Prabowo

Abstract

At present there is a tendency for Islam to be synonymous with Arabic culture so that being a true Muslim one must become an Arab Muslim represented in the form of, for example, veils, rather short pants, robes, and so on. Muslims should become Muslims who are truly indigenous according to the culture of Indonesia which is very rich and diverse. Basically humans cannot be separated from their culture because that is their identity from generation to generation to embrace Islam does not necessarily leave the characteristic of local culture that has been inherited by their ancestors. Islam in Indonesia was brought by Arab traders peacefully because it was able to adapt to the culture of Nusantara. Before Islam entered Indonesia, animism, dynamism, Hinduism and Buddhism colored the culture of Nusantara. Islam used that culture as a method of preaching to introduce Islam to non-Islamic communities. Islam comes with unique teachings through the concept of monotheism and egalitarianism in the context of societies that worship gods and caste systems in Hindu teachings so that non-Muslims are attracted to Islam. The Nusantara culture used by Islam as a method of da'wah includes: through building art, carving, music, dance, games, rituals, languages, the use of puppets, and so on. Walisongo is the most enthusiastic preacher in using culture as da'wah so that Islam can rapidly on the Island of Java. Keywords: Islam, Nusantara Culture and Da'wah Method.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to understand how the da’wa of Islam Nusantara by Muhammad Shalih as-Samarani is represented in academic works. Data of this paper are 18 academic manuscripts dated from 2015 to date. This paper finds that there are two strands of representations about the Islam Nusantara of Muhammad Shalih as-Samarani; the dominant narrative and the ‘other alternative’. Both narratives present as-Samarani as different actor. The first narrative present as-Samarani as a mufassir (interpreter of the Qur’an) and the second narrative present as-Samarani as a person who has deep knowledge on multiple disciplines such as fiqh, orthodox tasawwuf, and education. However, both narratives share one thing in common; they present as-Samarani as a Sufi Muslim who contributed greatly to the dialogue between Islamic teachings and elements of local wisdoms. Keywords: academic works, as- Samarani, and representation of Islam Nusantara.

Abstract

The occurrence of intercultural communication in multicultural education is indicated by the sense of equality in the education process, regardless of ethnicity, social class and the gender of the students. The dynamics of Islamic Religion Education, which was executed through an approach so-called ‘multicultural education’, combines traditions and learning process. Thus, the teachers were supposed to be the communicators who underline some particular factors such as readiness and empathy. The aim of this paper, therefore, is to describe the dynamics of intercultural communication in the settings of multicultural education performed by High School’s Islamic Religion Education (PAI) teachers in Makassar. This qualitative study found that teacher’s readiness was changing every time they taught another class with another academic major. A practical approach was the one preferred by the students of all kinds of academic majors, unlike the discussion and lecture approach. The other finding of this study was that teachers were more likely to show cognitive empathy rather than affective empathy. Keywords: Intercultural Communication, Multicultural Education, Islamic Religion Education
