Abstract

Ethnopharmacy is an approach used to explore the traditional use of medicinal plants within communities, which holds potential for the development of modern medicines. Hypertension is one of the non-communicable diseases that continues to pose a global health threat and requires proper management. This study aims to identify the types of plants used by the community for hypertension therapy, their processing methods, and the factors influencing their use. The method applied was observational with a cross-sectional design, conducted through questionnaires and interviews. Plant samples mentioned by the community were collected as herbarium specimens and analyzed for their chemical compound groups. The research conducted in Poka Village revealed 10 types of plants used for managing hypertension, including cat’s whiskers, Phyllanthus niruri, moringa, African leaf, basil, celery, lemongrass, pandan, soursop, and gotu kola. The three most commonly used plants were cat’s whiskers (17.5%), Phyllanthus niruri (15%), and moringa (15%). Information regarding their use was primarily obtained from family traditions (40%). Usage was irregular and typically applied only when necessary, with the most common preparation method being boiling (51%). The main factors influencing the use of herbal therapy included: natural ingredients (22.5%), easy availability (20%), family traditions (15%), fewer side effects (12.5%), and beliefs in their effectiveness and affordability. These findings highlight the need for government-led education and outreach to ensure the safe and optimal use of herbal medicine.

Abstract

Acute Upper Respiratory Tract Infection (AURTI) is a disease caused by an acute infection affecting the upper respiratory tract, typically resulting from bacteria and viruses. According to the 2018 Riskesdas report from the DKI Jakarta province, AURTI is among the most common infectious diseases in Jakarta, with a prevalence of 8.49%. The data indicates that AURTI is a recurring health issue each year, with several factors contributing to the rising incidence, one of which is irrational treatment. This study aims to determine the pattern of antibiotic use and the rationality of antibiotic use in AURTI therapy. This research is a non-experimental study with retrospective data collection and descriptive data analysis. The results show that the most commonly used antibiotics were cefixime (67%), azithromycin (14%), amoxicillin-clavulanate (8%), clindamycin (6%), amoxicillin (4%), and levofloxacin (2%), with oral administration. Of the 51 AURTI patient records evaluated in the Outpatient Department, the results showed 100% appropriateness in patient selection, 100% appropriateness in indication, 39% appropriateness in drug selection, 100% appropriateness in dosage, 96% appropriateness in duration, 94% appropriateness in frequency and route of administration 100%.

Abstract

Indonesia has a high intensity of sun exposure (Ultraviolet). To protect the skin from these UV rays, it is recommended to use cosmetics that contain special compounds as sunscreens, namely octyl methoxycinnamate (OMC). BPOM recommends the maximum concentration of OMC in sunscreen cosmetics is 10%. This study aims to validate the method of analysing OMC levels using UV-Vis spectrophotometer in loose powder sunscreen preparations that have been circulating. The validation method includes specificity, linearity, accuracy, precision, BD and BK. The optimal solvent was isopropanol, showing a linear regression equation y = 0.1003x + 0.0111; R² = 0.9998. Validation of the analytical method: λmax specificity of OMC standard 308.5 nm; linearity y = 0.1006x + 0.0102; R² = 0.9999. The % recovery values with concentrations of 80%, 100% and 120%, namely 122.18%; 113.88%; 106.66%. The % RSD values were 0.68%; 0.15%; 0.18%. BD value = 0.68 µg/mL; and BK = 2.06 µg/mL. The loose powder sunscreen sample A was 1.42% (b/v). Sample B was 0.22% (b/v) and sample C was 1.69% (b/v). OMC in sunscreen cosmetics fulfils the requirements recommended by BPOM.

Abstract

The inappropriate use of antibiotics is one of the main factors contributing to antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which significantly increases global morbidity and mortality rates. Patient adherence to antibiotic regimens plays a crucial role in preventing the development of resistance. Socioeconomic factors, such as educational level, occupation, and income, are suspected to influence adherence levels. This study aims to analyze the impact of socioeconomic factors on adherence to oral antibiotic use at Puskesmas X in Depok City. The results indicate that socioeconomic factors (education, occupation, and income) collectively have a significant effect on adherence to oral antibiotic use, contributing 10.8% to the variance in adherence, while the remaining 89.2% is influenced by other unexamined factors. An ANOVA (F-test) yielded a significance value of 0.011 (< 0.05), thereby supporting the general hypothesis (H1). Further analysis using partial t-tests revealed that educational level was the most influential factor, with a significance value of 0.052, close to the α threshold of 0.05. This finding suggests that higher educational attainment enhances individuals’ ability to understand medical information and follow antibiotic usage instructions, thereby improving adherence. Conversely, occupation (α = 0.759) and income level (α = 0.122) did not demonstrate a significant influence on adherence to oral antibiotic use

Abstract

A famous traditional herbal cure created from natural materials, turmeric and tamarind herbal medicine (jamu turmeric tamarind) is now readily available in powder form. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and quality of powdered turmeric and tamarind herbal medicine by looking at factors including water content, total phenolic content, and microbiological contamination. Six brands of commercially available powdered turmeric and tamarind herbal medicine were the subject of an experimental laboratory investigation. The Folin–Ciocalteu method was used to determine the total phenolic content, the gravimetric technique was used to measure the water content, and the pour plate method was used to conduct the Yeast Mold Count (YMC) and Total Plate Count (TPC) assays. The findings indicated that all samples had AKK values ​​between <1 and 1.7 × 10¹ cfu/g and ALT values ​​between <1 and 1.2 × 10⁴ cfu/g, both of which were below the upper limit established by BPOM Regulation Number 29 of 2023. Significant variations were observed in the total phenolic levels among the samples; the maximum value was 121.03 mg GAE/g, while other samples had extremely low values. All of the samples met the quality requirements for natural medical powder formulations since their water contents ranged from 0.62 to 7.20%, which is less than 10%. The analyzed powdered turmeric and tamarind herbal medicine satisfies microbiological safety and quality criteria, has an acceptable water content, and exhibits a range of bioactive potential, according to these findings.

Abstract

Herbal medicine research in Indonesia has experienced rapid development along with the increasing interest in natural-based treatments and the utilization of biodiversity. This study aims to map the scientific landscape of herbal medicine research in Indonesia during the period 1983–2026 using a bibliometric approach. Data were obtained from the Scopus database with keywords related to herbal medicine, traditional medicine, phytotherapy, and ethnopharmacology combined with the Indonesian context. Analysis was conducted using VOSviewer and Biblioshiny software to evaluate publication trends, journal sources, author productivity, institutional affiliations, citations, and keyword mapping. The results show 659 publications from 333 sources, with an annual growth rate of 6.5%. The publication trend has increased significantly since 2016 and peaked in 2025 with 92 articles. Keyword analysis shows the dominance of topics such as herbal medicine, plant extract, phytochemistry, and antioxidant activity, indicating that the research focus is still at the pre-clinical stage. Publication sources are dominated by proceedings such as the IOP Conference Series (35 articles) and journals such as Biodiversitas (32 articles). The most productive institutions were Airlangga University (95 publications) and Gadjah Mada University (82 publications), with an average of 4.9 authors per article and 17.91% international collaboration. The highest-impact articles received 313 citations, demonstrating the importance of publication in reputable journals. In conclusion, herbal medicine research in Indonesia has shown significant growth but is still dominated by exploratory research. Improvements in publication quality, international collaboration, and strengthening translational research are needed to support the development of evidence-based herbal medicines and enhance Indonesia's contribution globally.

Abstract

Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is known to contain bioactive compounds with pharmacological potential, including anti-inflammatory activity. Inflammation is characterized by an increase in the biomarker C-reactive protein (CRP), which is produced by the liver in response to inflammatory processes. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of garlic juice on CRP levels in male Sprague Dawley rats induced with carrageenan. An experimental design was applied using 24 male rats divided into six groups: normal control, negative control (Na-CMC 1%), positive control (diclofenac sodium 4.5 mg/kgBW), and treatment groups receiving garlic juice at doses of 300, 400, and 500 mg/kgBW. Inflammation was induced by 1% carrageenan injection, and CRP levels were measured using the CRP-latex method. The results showed that garlic juice significantly reduced CRP levels compared with the negative control (p<0.05). The 500 mg/kgBW dose produced the most optimal effect, approaching the efficacy of the positive control. Therefore, garlic juice has potential as a natural anti-inflammatory agent effective in reducing CRP levels.
