Abstract

Purpose of the study: The aim of this study is to explore the effectiveness of integrating Computational Thinking (CT) and Mathematical Modelling (MM) in STEM education to improve students’ understanding of mathematical concepts, problem-solving skills, and engagement in the learning process. Methodology: This study utilized a quasi-experimental method with pre-test and post-test design. The sample of this study consisted of 200 students, who were randomly selected from four high schools in the Jambi City and Muaro Jambi areas. Tools included a mathematics achievement test and a student engagement questionnaire. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests and independent t-tests with the aid of SPSS software. Main Findings: The integration of Computational Thinking and Mathematical Modelling significantly improved students' understanding of mathematical concepts, problem-solving skills, and engagement. The experimental group showed a notable increase in post-test scores and higher engagement levels compared to the control group. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study introduces a novel framework for integrating Computational Thinking and Mathematical Modelling in STEM education, highlighting its potential to enhance both cognitive and affective aspects of learning. It provides empirical evidence supporting the use of innovative approaches to advance mathematics education.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: The purpose of this study is to explore how collaborative professional development programs can enhance the Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) of mathematics teachers, particularly in integrating pedagogy with content, improving teaching strategies, and addressing challenges in the classroom. Methodology: This study uses a qualitative research design with a case study approach. Data collection tools include in-depth interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis. The participants consist of 20 middle school mathematics teachers. Data analysis is conducted using thematic analysis, with a focus on identifying patterns and themes related to the development of PCK. Main Findings: The study found that collaborative professional development significantly improved teachers' ability to integrate pedagogy with content, implement innovative teaching strategies, and develop more structured lesson plans. Additionally, 75% of teachers reported increased student engagement, while 60% faced challenges related to time and resource limitations. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study provides new insights into the effectiveness of collaborative professional development in enhancing Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) among mathematics teachers. It contributes to existing knowledge by demonstrating the impact of collaborative learning on teaching strategies and identifies key challenges, offering valuable implications for future teacher training programs.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between students' problem-solving abilities and mathematical thinking, and to identify how these two abilities can support each other in the development of holistic mathematical skills in secondary education. Methodology: This study uses quantitative methods with correlational and survey designs. The instrument used is a written test, consisting of story questions and multiple choices. Data collection is done through structured observation and documentation. The software used for data analysis is SPSS, with descriptive and inferential statistical analysis techniques, including the Pearson correlation test and simple linear regression test. Main Findings: The results of the study showed that there was a strong and significant relationship between problem-solving ability and mathematical thinking of students in grades 11.F1 (r = 0.74, p = 0.001) and 11.F3 (r = 0.68, p = 0.003). Problem-solving ability was also shown to predict mathematical thinking with a significant effect (R² = 0.55, p = 0.001). The problem-solving factor can explain 55% of the variance in students' mathematical thinking. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study shows a strong correlation between secondary school pupils' mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills, particularly when it comes to number-related content. The study's originality is the finding that students' problem-solving skills can anticipate how their mathematical thinking will evolve, offering fresh perspectives for creating learning models that would simultaneously improve both abilities.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: The purpose of this study was to explore the role of Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) in improving students' mathematical problem-solving skills and learning strategies in the classroom. This study also analyzed the effectiveness of the RME approach and students' and teachers' perceptions of the approach. Methodology: This study used a mixed method with a quasi-experimental design (pretest-posttest control group) and a case study. Data were collected using problem-solving tests, observation sheets, and interviews. The research instruments included context-based test questions, observation guides, and interview guides. Data analysis was carried out using statistical tests using SPSS and thematic analysis for qualitative data. Main Findings: The main results of this study indicate that the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach significantly improved students' mathematical problem-solving skills compared to the conventional method. The mean posttest scores of students in the RME group were higher, with consistent improvement. Observations showed more active student engagement, use of visual aids, and contextual relevance in learning. Interviews revealed positive perceptions of teachers and students towards the effectiveness of the RME approach. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study is interesting since it thoroughly examines how well Indonesian students, particularly those in junior high school, can solve mathematical problems through Realistic Mathematics Education (RME). In addition to examining students' opinions and teachers' learning practices, this study offers a fresh perspective on the RME approach's growth within the local educational setting.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions of teachers, students, and parents towards the use of a web-based character assessment system supported by Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and to determine the results of student character using a web-based character assessment system. Methodology: This study uses a quantitative research approach with a descriptive design. The tools used include a perception questionnaire and a web-based character assessment system. Data were collected using a questionnaire for perception data, and character data were collected using a web-based platform for character assessment. Analysis was performed using SPSS for descriptive statistical evaluation. Main Findings: The study found that the majority of teachers (70%), students (68.67%), and parents (76%) rated the web-based character assessment system as very effective. The results showed that most students achieved good or excellent character outcomes, with an average score of 70.0. This demonstrates the system's ability to accurately assess and support students' character development. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study introduces a comprehensive, ICT-enabled, web-based character assessment model that combines real-time data, transparency, and collaboration between schools and families. This study advances existing knowledge by demonstrating the potential of technology to enhance character education, providing a scalable framework for broader educational applications.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to understand the factors that influence students in choosing a mathematics major using the factor analysis method. Methodology: Data were collected through structured interviews from 150 students at two different universities using stratified random sampling techniques. Analysis was performed using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Varimax rotation to identify the main dimensions that influence student preferences. Numerical analysis helped to group the variables into relevant factors based on the loading values Main Findings: Factors that influence students in choosing Mathematics Major consist of 19 variables which are grouped into 5 factors, namely: the first factor is privileges and facilities with an eigenvalue of 4.088%, the second factor is the lecture building and social factors with an eigenvalue of 2.431%, the third factor is the promotion factor with an eigenvalue of 1.743%, the fourth factor is the job factor with an eigenvalue of 1.351%, the fifth factor is the comfort factor with an eigenvalue of 1.148%. Novelty/Originality of this study: These findings provide new insights for educational institutions in designing effective promotional strategies and developing relevant curricula to increase the attractiveness of mathematics majors. The novelty of this study lies in the application of factor analysis to map students' specific reasons, which has rarely been done before in the context of higher education.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to analyze the influence of traditional navigation knowledge and the use of ethnomathematics on the success of traditional fishermen's operations in Indonesia. Using a quantitative approach and the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) method. The survey was conducted on traditional fishermen who have been operating for more than five years, utilizing local navigation knowledge, and applying mathematical principles in going to sea. Methodology: The research instrument was a closed questionnaire with a 5-point Likert scale to measure three main variables: Traditional Navigation Knowledge, Utilization of Ethnomathematics, and Success of Traditional Fishermen's Operations. Data were analyzed through validity, reliability, and structural model tests. Main Findings: results show that traditional navigation knowledge has a significant effect on the success of fishermen's operations with a path coefficient of 0.45 (p = 0.002). The use of ethnomathematics also has a significant effect with a path coefficient of 0.36 (p = 0.005). Overall, the two independent variables explain 60% of the variation in the success of fishermen's operations. This finding emphasizes the importance of integrating local wisdom and scientific approaches to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of traditional fishermen's activities. Novelty/Originality of this study: This research has a novelty by integrating two approaches, namely the influence of traditional navigation knowledge and ethnomathematics, and exploring mathematical concepts in local culture. The results provide an important contribution in developing a model that combines local wisdom and scientific principles to support the sustainability of traditional fishermen's operations in Indonesia.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This research aims to develop a combinatorial optimization model based on discrete mathematical methods that can be applied to mathematical physics problems in complex systems, such as molecular energy configurations and viscoelastic system simulations. Methodology: The study used a development approach with ADDIE design (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). Data were obtained through interviews, simulations, and instrument validation involving lecturers and students of mathematical physics. Main Findings: The results of the study showed that the developed model had an average accuracy of 85% and a time efficiency of 2.5 seconds per iteration. This model also received positive feedback from users, with an average satisfaction score of 4.6 out of 5. Novelty/Originality of this study: The novelty of the research lies in the integration of discrete mathematical methods with combinatorial optimization to solve complex mathematical physics problems.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to analyze the effect of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model integrated with ethnomathematics on students' critical thinking skills, considering the mediating role of curiosity. Methodology: This study uses a quantitative approach using Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) to evaluate the relationship between variables. Indicators for the PBL model include understanding of ethnomathematics concepts, cultural relevance, student engagement, and effectiveness in learning. Critical thinking skills are assessed through basic clarification, inference, and strategy, while curiosity is measured by attention, questioning, and comparison. Main Findings: The results showed that the ethnomathematics-based PBL model significantly improved students' critical thinking skills, with a direct effect of 0.68 and a total effect of 0.92 when mediated by curiosity (indirect effect 0.24). This model explains 62% of the variance in critical thinking skills and 29% in curiosity. This study introduces a novel integration of cultural context into a PBL framework, showing that embedding local traditions enhances cognitive engagement and critical thinking in a meaningful way. Novelty/Originality of this study: The findings suggest that incorporating ethnomathematics into PBL not only enhances cognitive skills but also fosters curiosity, offering an effective and culturally responsive teaching strategy.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This paper investigates the relationship between mathematics achievement in the Trends in Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and two key school achievement measures—grades and national test results—in Tunisia. Going beyond previous studies, this research also explores how these relationships differ across diverse student subgroups, providing a nuanced understanding of educational equity. Methodology:Give name, Employing robust statistical analyses, the study uncovers a strong positive correlation between TIMSS mathematics scores and both grade 6 and grade 9 achievement measures, underscoring TIMSS’s reliability as an indicator of student performance in the national context. Notably, students from more educated households consistently outperformed their peers from less-educated backgrounds on TIMSS, and the association between TIMSS scores and school achievement measures was significantly stronger for students from advantaged home environments. Main Findings: These findings suggest that socioeconomic factors and school contexts critically shape TIMSS performance, highlighting disparities in educational outcomes. Furthermore, the results call for a re-evaluation of how TIMSS data is interpreted and utilized in national education policies, especially in addressing inequities. By illuminating the complex interplay between individual backgrounds, school contexts, and standardized assessments, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of TIMSS as both a tool for measuring student achievement and a reflection of systemic challenges. Novelty/Originality of this study: These insights have profound implications for policymakers, educators, and researchers seeking to leverage TIMSS data for meaningful educational improvements while ensuring equity across diverse student populations.
