Abstract

Abstract

The sandwich generation refers to individuals who are responsible for meeting their own needs while simultaneously providing support to financially dependent family members. These multiple responsibilities may affect an individual's psychological well-being. One factor that is considered important in maintaining psychological well-being is resilience. This study aimed to examine the relationship between resilience and psychological well-being among working sandwich generation individuals in the Jabodetabek area. This study employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. A total of 150 participants were recruited using a snowball sampling technique. Resilience was measured using the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-10), with one item removed following pilot testing, resulting in a modified 9-item version, while psychological well-being was assessed using the 18-item Ryff's Psychological Well-Being Scale. Data were analyzed using Spearman's rho correlation. The results revealed a significant positive correlation between resilience and psychological well-being among working sandwich generation individuals in Jabodetabek (ρ = .542, p < .001), indicating a moderate positive association. These findings indicate that individuals with higher levels of resilience tended to report higher levels of psychological well-being. This study provides empirical evidence regarding the association between resilience and psychological well-being among working sandwich generation individuals.

Abstract

The present study examined the relationship between Instagram usage and stress among college students. Social networking applications have become deeply embedded in students' academic, social, and emotional lives, and concerns have increased regarding the mental health effects of excessive use. The study aimed to determine whether higher levels of Instagram usage are associated with greater stress among college students. A sample of 150 degree college students from Mysuru city, Karnataka, was selected randomly for the study. The sample included 75 male students and 75 female students, and the age of the participants ranged from 18 to 25 years, with a mean age of 23.16 years and a standard deviation of 1.91 years . Data were collected using the Test for Instagram Addiction (TIA; D'Souza et al., 2018) and the stress component of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 (DASS-21; Lovibond & Lovibond, 1995). Pearson's product-moment correlation and regression analysis were used to analyze the data. The results showed that all dimensions of Instagram addiction were positively and significantly related to stress, and the total Instagram addiction score was also positively correlated with stress, indicating that higher Instagram addiction is associated with higher stress among college students. The findings suggest that excessive and obsessive Instagram use may contribute to psychological strain in students, and the study highlights the need for awareness, prevention, and healthy digital behavior among young adults.

Abstract

This study, embodies a holistic approach and a qualitative thematic approach to the rising concerns towards the depleting mental health in Indian working population. Mental health screening is often, silhouette by the Western Diagnostic paradigms. This results in the under-utilization of the culturally specific representations, which is the research gap that is represented through this qualitative paper.  This paper implores and explores the lens, Indian Knowledge System (IKS) which is an initiative under the Ministry of Education MoE, deeply rooted in Yoga, Ayurveda, and Meditation. Simultaneously, studying its utility, as well as integrating with contemporary mental health diagnosis the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ), emphasizing its relevance for the working population facing diverse psychological challenges. The Vedic Personality Inventory (VPI) is framework that is deeply engrained in ancient Indian texts such as the Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda, Atharva Veda, and Upanishads, serves as a paradigm to screen mental health or condition of an individual’s consciousness by assessing personality traits linked to mental health. This study imparts the General Mental Health Questionnaire (GHQ) developed by David Goldberg, which screens using 4 areas, A, B, C and D, stress, anxiety, social dysfunction and somatic symptoms, respectively. Concerning the increase in mental health trauma among the working population, this research posits that through the lens of IKS i.e. using the VPI in integration with the GHQ. This interdisciplinary approach addresses existing research gaps in culturally contextual mental health assessment tools, advocating the revitalization of traditional knowledge in modern psychological practice.

Abstract

During the critical stage of early adulthood, cultivating emotional intelligence-related abilities like social competence and emotional regulation may be useful for enhancing general well-being. The present study explored the relationship between parenting styles and emotional intelligence (EI) among emerging adults, with the primary objective of examining how different parenting approaches are related to the development of EI in individuals aged 19 to 25. A quantitative research design was employed, utilizing the Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ) by Buri (1991) and the Emotional Intelligence Scale by Dr. Arun Kr. Singh & Dr. Shruti Narain (2014). Data were collected from a sample of 100 college and university students. Pearson’s Product-Moment Correlation was computed using the SPSS-26 software. Overall, findings indicated no statistically significant correlation between general parenting styles and the emotional intelligence of emerging adults. However, in-depth analysis revealed that mothers' authoritative parenting style was comparatively more correlated with higher EI levels. Conversely, fathers' parenting styles showed minimal correlation, suggesting a limited paternal influence on the emotional development of their children in this sample. These results provide a potential importance of emotional presence and involvement in parenting. In particular, the data suggest that when a father is not consistently emotionally engaged or involved in everyday interactions, even if he adopts an authoritative style, his impact on the child's emotional development may be limited. The study contributes to the understanding of family dynamics and underscores the differentiated roles of mothers and fathers in shaping emotional intelligence during emerging adulthood.

Abstract

Emotional abuse during adolescence is a subtle yet serious form of maltreatment that can significantly affect psychological, emotional, and social development. Emotional abuse often normalised within family and school contexts, manifests through neglect, rejection, humiliation, criticism, and social isolation, making it difficult to identify during a critical developmental stage. The objective of the present study is to assess extent of emotional abuse among   high school boys and girls’ students. The study consisted of a sample of 201 high school students (103 boys and 98 girls) were selected from two distinct schools in Bangalore.  Data was collected utilizing the Emotional Abuse Scale, developed by Pushplatha Rajpoot. The results, indicate that girls reported higher levels of emotional abuse (M = 63.82, SD = 12.30) compared to boys (M = 60.67, SD = 7.81). This difference was statistically significant, t(199) = 2.17, p = .03, suggesting that gender plays a meaningful role in the experience of emotional abuse among high school students. The results emphasize the necessity of early detection and school-based interventions to support the mental health of adolescents. Identifying Emotional Abuse in High School Students can help educators, administrators, and policymakers create effective strategies to enhance emotional well-being to protect the psychological health of the High School Students.

Abstract

The Korean Wave phenomenon has increased the purchasing of K-Pop merchandise, particularly among emerging adults, which may encourage impulsive buying behavior. This study aimed to examine the relationship between self-control and impulsive buying in purchasing K-Pop merchandise among emerging adult K-Pop fans. This study employed a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. Participants consisted of 139 K-Pop fans aged 18–25 years who were recruited through purposive sampling from a K-Pop fan WhatsApp community in Indonesia. All participants had previously purchased K-Pop merchandise. Self-control was measured using the Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS) developed by Tangney et al. (2004) (Cronbach's α = 0.787), while impulsive buying was measured using a scale based on the dimensions proposed by Verplanken and Herabadi (2001) (Cronbach's α = 0.899). Because the data did not meet the normality assumption, Spearman's rank correlation was used as the primary analysis with JASP software. The mean self-control score was 43.72 (SD = 6.91), while the mean impulsive buying score was 43.01 (SD = 11.17). The results showed a very weak positive and non-significant relationship between self-control and impulsive buying (ρ = 0.062, p = 0.471). These findings indicate that self-control was not significantly associated with impulsive buying of K-Pop merchandise among emerging adult K-Pop fans in this study, suggesting that other factors may play a greater role in explaining impulsive buying behavior.

Abstract

Examination stress represents a critical psychological concern among school-going children, significantly influencing emotional well-being, academic performance, and overall developmental outcomes. The present study aimed to assess the psychological effects of examination stress and identify associated factors among students aged 10–18 years. A cross-sectional descriptive design was employed, involving a sample of 300 students from rural and semi-urban schools in Kolar district, Karnataka. Standardized instruments, including the Examination Stress Scale (ESS) and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21), were utilized to measure stress and related psychological outcomes. The findings revealed that approximately 62% of students experienced moderate to high levels of examination stress. Significant positive correlations were observed between examination stress and anxiety (r = .61, p < .001) as well as depression (r = .54, p < .001), indicating a strong association between academic stress and psychological distress. Furthermore, multiple regression analysis identified key predictors of examination stress, including high parental pressure, poor sleep quality, and excessive screen time. These findings underscore the substantial psychological burden associated with academic examinations among adolescents, particularly in competitive educational contexts. The study highlights the urgent need for implementing school-based mental health interventions, promoting adaptive coping strategies, and addressing environmental stressors such as parental expectations and lifestyle factors. Additionally, policy-level reforms aimed at reducing academic pressure and integrating mental health services within educational systems are recommended to support the well-being and holistic development of students.

Abstract

Emotional stability is considered as a protective personality trait when looked up in psychological literatures that are associated with lowering stress and enhancing well-being (Steel et al., 2008; Kroencke, Geukes, & Denissen, 2020). However, a pilot study of women educators revealed an unexpected positive correlation between emotional stability and perceived stress (Das, 2025). This paradox is confounding and suggests gaps in assumptions that have been made about personality traits and their expression and measurement within a given culture and professional framework. One possibility focuses on emotional suppression and social desirability, which is the phenomenon in which people report higher emotional stability in order to conform to social expectations while undergoing heightened psychological stress (Gross & John, 2003; Paulhus, 2002). This is especially the case for women professionals in collectivist cultures, who are admired for their calmness and self-restraint (Matsumoto, Yoo, & Nakagawa, 2008) a prominent personality aspect of a respectable women under the Indian societal lookout. The study illustrates the need to refine personality–stress models to incorporate gendered, culturally discriminated coping strategies that subvert conventional trait–outcome relationships. These findings, in particular, urge us to exercise methodological caution and propose context-sensitive, mixed-method frameworks in stress and personality research.
