Abstract

Translation plays a crucial role in many aspects, including film subtitles. This research aimed toidentify the types of translation strategies and the quality of the translations used in the Indonesian subtitle ofthe film Frozen II. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the analysis was based on Suryawinata and Hariyanto'stranslation strategies classification, which includes structural and semantic strategies. Nine strategies wereidentified: addition, transposition, borrowing, cultural equivalent, descriptive equivalent, synonym, reduction, expansion, and modulation. The translation's quality was evaluated using Nababan et al.'s criteria of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The results showed that the translation was highly accurate, with an accuracypercentage of 85.9%. However, the 14.1% of translations classified as less accurate (12.7%) or inaccurate(1.4%) highlight challenges in capturing nuance, tone, and context, often due to constraints like limited spaceand timing in subtitles. While most translations were accurate, these cases emphasize the need for carefulattention to detail to maintain the original meaning. Furthermore, this study concludes that the translatoreffectively applied multiple strategies, resulting in a high-quality translation that captures the intended meaningand cultural nuances of Frozen II. Additionally, the distinct contribution of this study lies in its thoroughintegration of both structural and semantic translation strategies, providing a more comprehensive analysisthan previous research. It emphasizes the critical importance of not only translating language accurately butalso conveying meaning and cultural nuances, particularly in the subtitles of animated films, to preserve theoriginal essence and emotional impact for Indonesian audiences.

Abstract

This research analyzes the Massappo Wanua tradition in Lapao Hamlet, Binuang Village, Barru Regency, using a semiotic approach. This tradition, which is performed annually by the Bugis community, aims to protect the village from disasters and maintain the balance between humans and nature. This research explores the symbols used in the ritual as well as the meaning of each symbol related to spiritual, social, and ecological values. The research method used is qualitative with data collection techniques in the form of participatory observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of the research using the theory of Charles Sander Pierce's Semiotics show that symbols such as rekkko ota, addupa-dupaang, and benno not only function ritually, but also reflect values such as welfare, honesty, and harmonious relationships between humans, nature, and spirituality. The findings enrich the understanding of Bugis people's cosmological relationship with nature and the ecological relevance of cultural practices that are preserved for generations.

Abstract

This study analyze the rhetorical structures employed in beauty brand sales videos on Instagram aiming to understand how they engage viewers and influence purchasing behaviour. Using a genre-based analytical approach, especially the model suggested by (Warsidi, Adnan, et al., 2024), the study identifies three main rhetorical moves across 15 selected sales videos. These videos were chosen based on data sets criteria. The findings reveal that establishing customer interest is the most dominant move in all samples, with strategies such as presenting product benefits and using persuasive interaction language appearing most frequently. Conversely, strategies like greeting the audience or providing taglines appeared less often and were considered optional. The study explores language frames used to increase engagement on social media platforms, including emotionally resonant queries, descriptive product language, personal suggestions, and urgent calls to action. By combining qualitative and quantitative methods, this study provides valuable insights into how rhetorical strategies influence consumer behavior on social media platforms. The research emphasizes the importance of creating content and the strategic role of language and appearance in selling products effectively. This research contributes to understanding digital marketing and offers implications for rhetorical studies, social media marketing, and English for Business Purposes (EBP).

Abstract

This research is a sociolinguistic study focusing on movie language styles. This research aims to analyze the language styles of the Mulan 2020 movie and identify the context of the dominant language style used in the film. The researchers conducted this study using a descriptive qualitative method. This research involves multiple stages, including repeatedly watching the film to comprehend its content by concentrating on character dialogues and situational contexts. Subsequently, the researchers categorized the data for further analysis and adopts the applicable theory. This research uses the theory of language style from Martin Joos. The results of this study found four language styles with 74 data points, namely seven data points of the frozen style, thirty-nine data points of the formal style, twenty-three data points of the casual style, and five data points of the intimate style. The contextual use of this dominant language style is also diverse and often occurs in military situations, royal areas, formal situations, situations between Mulan and Xianniang as protagonists and antagonists, and informal situations. The use of this predominant language style generally serves the movie's storyline. These findings imply the influence of culture and social status on the prevalence of formal language styles in historically developed Asian movies, which serve functions outside formal situations.
