Abstract

This paper critically examines the intersection of Edward Said’s Orientalism and Western perceptions of development in Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa (MENA). Through a qualitative textual analysis of seminal literature on Orientalism and development studies, this research deconstructs the dominant discourses that perpetuate Western-centric views of development in these regions. Drawing on Said’s seminal work, Orientalism (1978), this study identifies and interrogates the power dynamics, stereotypes, as well as cultural essentialisms that underpin Western representations of development in Asia and MENA. This research employs a critical discourse analysis (CDA) approach to examine a corpus of texts, including academic articles, policy documents, and literary works, addressing the central arguments and key assumptions of Orientalism. The textual analysis focuses on narratives that reinforce Orientalist tropes, marginalize indigenous perspectives, and legitimize Western dominance in development discourse. By juxtaposing Western development narratives with counter-narratives, this study exposes the epistemological tensions and power asymmetries that shape development policies and perceptions. The findings of this study contribute to a nuanced understanding of the complex interplay between Orientalism and Western development perceptions, highlighting the need for decolonial and inclusive approaches to development.

Abstract

This paper investigates how Salman Rushdie’s Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder employs a fragmented, non‑linear narrative to represent the multifaceted experience of trauma, survival, and post‑traumatic recovery. Drawing on trauma theory (Caruth, 1996; Herman, 1992) and narrative theory (Bakhtin, 1981; White, 1980), it argues that Rushdie’s meditative structure both mirrors the disorientation of post‑traumatic consciousness and serves as a mechanism of narrative repair. The analysis begins by situating Knife within the broader contexts of autobiographical and trauma‑narrative traditions, then outlines the theoretical underpinnings that foreground trauma’s resistance to linear narration and the potential for post‑traumatic growth. Subsequent sections examine how Rushdie’s strategic use of fragmentation, repetition, and shifts between public and private discourse enacts the ruptured temporality of trauma, and how his reflections on bodily wounds, existential questioning, and creative resilience underscore survival as an ongoing negotiation. Finally, the study explores writing itself as a therapeutic practice, showing how repetitive narrativization allows Rushdie to reclaim agency and reconfigure his identity. The paper concludes that Knife transcends conventional memoir, demonstrating how narrative form can both bear witness to psychic fracture and facilitate healing, ultimately modeling the potential for growth and creative renewal in the aftermath of violence.

Abstract

Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) increases short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) levels in the intestines, which acts as a signal to activate the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathway. This activation is crucial for reducing oxidative stress and maintaining mitochondrial balance. This study aims to review several research papers that explore and highlight how L. plantarum makes SCFAs to activate Nrf2, specifically the strategies it uses to combat free radicals. The systematic review technique systematically investigates, assesses, analyzes, and interprets all study findings relevant to the research topic. We sourced articles from three databases: Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, covering the period from 2014 to 2024. The study found that SCFAs made by L. plantarum are important signals that trigger the Nrf2 signaling pathway, which helps protect cells from damage caused by oxidation and inflammation. L. plantarum is a beneficial probiotic that uses SCFAs to trigger the Nrf2 pathway, providing strong protection against free radicals and supporting various health benefits.
