Abstract

This research aims to explore the grammatical interpretations found in in the Udāna Aṭṭhakathā, a commentary attributed to Ᾱcariya Dhammapāla. The Udāna Aṭṭhakathā represents a significant work within Theravāda Buddhism. Ᾱcariya Dhammapāla, following the Mahāvihāra tradition, wrote the commentary on Udāna, by giving more information and elucidation of words with grammatical interpretation. Through this library research, this research investigates the methodology utilized by Ᾱcariya Dhammapāla in his commentaries. It highlights his method to follow the traditional grammatical rules while providing an interpretation of the canonical texts. The study draws upon primary and secondary sources to investigate Ᾱcariya Dhammapāla's approach to grammatical interpretation. Pāli literature including canon and commentaries are considered as the primary sources. While, secondary sources represented by books, journals, articles and previous research related to the topic. As results, this research provides deep understanding on the Ᾱcariya Dhammapāla's commentary, his methodology in writing the commentary and the grammatical interpretations in his commentary.

Abstract

This article focuses on the altruism crisis that has emerged in society during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is proven by violators of health norms' carelessness to the risk of the infection spreading further. Those infected with the COVID-19 virus do so on purpose in public areas, oblivious to the consequences for others. This article also demonstrates that low empathy, social responsibility, and self-control influence the crisis of altruism experienced by health protocol violators, according to a literature review. As a result, we provide a scientific contribution by reminding society of the necessity of altruism in preventing the spread of the COVID-19 virus through this article.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the impact of audio-visual learning aids on enhancing the academic performance of students attending Girikirti Vihara Sunday School. Employing an experimental design with a quantitative approach, the study utilized a questionnaire administered to 12 students spanning from fourth grade elementary to third grade junior high school. Data collected through the questionnaires were analyzed using a Likert scale, while the effects of visual, audio, and audio-visual media on Buddhist religious values were assessed using the t-test. The findings reveal a significant positive correlation between the use of learning media (visual, audio, and audio-visual) and comprehension of Buddhist subjects, with achievement percentages of 85.41%, 81.25%, and 87.5%, respectively. Similarly, the impact on students' concentration during learning yielded percentages of 81.25%, 79.16%, and 83.33% for visual, audio, and audio-visual media, respectively. Moreover, the influence of these media on students' interest in Buddhist learning material was evident, with achievement percentages of 83.33%, 79.16%, and 85.41%. Regarding memory retention in Buddhist subjects, percentages of 77.08%, 81.25%, and 83.33% were achieved for visual, audio, and audio-visual media, respectively. Furthermore, the t-test analysis demonstrated a significant effect of learning media (visual, audio, and audio-visual) on the scores of Buddhist religious subjects at Girikirti Vihara Sunday School. These findings underscore the importance of utilizing effective learning media in the teaching process to enhance student achievement and comprehension.

Abstract

Meditasi Vipassāna Bhāvāna merupakan praktik meditasi yang sangat penting dalam ajaran Buddha, namun seringkali disalahpahami. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk mengklarifikasi konsep dan praktik meditasi Vipassāna Bhāvāna. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah studi kepustakaan untuk mengumpulkan data dari berbagai sumber perpustakaan. Pembahasan meliputi pengertian meditasi Vipassāna Bhāvāna, empat macam satipatthana, penghambat dalam praktik meditasi, dan langkah-langkah meditasi yang benar. Meditasi Vipassāna Bhāvāna bertujuan untuk memurnikan pikiran dari gangguan dan mencapai pemahaman penuh tentang ketidakkekalan, penderitaan, dan tanpa diri, yang merupakan landasan menuju pencerahan. Empat sattipathana meliputi perenungan terhadap tubuh, perasaan, pikiran, dan dhamma. Pentingnya pemahaman terhadap penghalang dalam meditasi juga dibahas, termasuk sepuluh macam Vipassanupakilesa dan empat Vipallasa-Dhamma. Artikel ini juga menyoroti langkah- langkah penting dalam praktik meditasi Vipassāna Bhāvāna, termasuk pemilihan tempat yang nyaman, perhatian pada napas, dan bimbingan guru meditasi. Dengan demikian, artikel ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pemahaman yang lebih baik tentang meditasi Vipassāna Bhāvāna dan menghindari kesalahpahaman yang sering terjadi.

Abstract

This research aims to explore communication ethics in the use of social media, with a focus on Buddhist values ​​that can provide guidance for individuals in using social media. Ethics, as part of the moral values ​​implemented by religion, should be a guide for wise behavior, including when using social media. However, in reality, there is negligence in the use of social media in society, which involves practices such as smear campaigns, hate speech, online bullying (cyberbullying), and the spread of fake news (hoaxes). Therefore, this research is interesting to dig deeper through analysis of Buddhist values, so that Buddhist teachings can become a filter and guide for people to communicate wisely on social media. The research method used in this research is library research. Data analysis in this study highlights that social media use should reflect kindness, teachings of truth, joy, and consistency with facts. These four values ​​must be supported by other aspects, such as subtlety of language and expression, the basis of love in speaking, as well as consideration of the purpose and appropriate time in conveying the message. Manifestations can be found in content, writing or posts that have an educational, inspiring and useful character. In addition, when receiving information on social media, it is important to be selective and critical, but remain open to constructive criticism, while upholding healthy discussions on social media.

Abstract

The Dhammadipa Arama Bursa is one of the important facilities at Dhammadipa Arama Monastery, providing a variety of devotional items, Buddhist souvenirs, as well as daily necessities such as snacks and toiletries. Inaugurated on July 17, 2011 by Bhikkhu Dhammavijayo Mahathera, the Bursa plays a vital role in supporting the religious and economic activities of the hermitage. This research aims to analyze the marketing strategies used by the manager of the Dhammadipa Arama Bursa in attracting visitors. The research method used is qualitative with the approach of interview, observation, and literature study. The results showed that the Dhammadipa Arama Bursa implemented various marketing strategies, including product, price, place, and promotion strategies. The product strategy includes the provision of Buddhist goods and daily necessities, with the featured product being Dewi Bulan liniment oil. The pricing strategy involves setting prices based on prices from suppliers with a profit of no more than 10%. Place strategy includes a location close to the main gate, but less visible from the outside. Promotion is limited through social media and brochures during major Buddhist celebrations such as Kathina. These findings indicate the importance of the manager's enthusiasm and persistence (Vīriya Balaṁ) in developing the Dhammadipa Arama Bursa to make it better known and beneficial for visitors and for the Dhammadipa Arama Padepokan.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to compare the effects on students at Kertarajasa College of Buddhism (STAB) before and after they used Chat GPT. The research design employed in this study is an experiment using a quantitative methodology. A questionnaire given to every student and the average GPA from batch 21's first and seventh semesters served as the research instrument. A Likert scale and a t-test will be used to assess the data gathered from the distribution of questionnaires in order to determine the average GPA score. The study's findings clarify why Chat GPT's degree of use has a positive impact. The evaluation, comprising 30 questions, yielded a total score of 5710 with a percentage achievement of 73.21%. In the partial assessment, the motivation aspect had a value of 1909 with a percentage achievement of 73.35%, the effectiveness aspect had a value of 1889 with a percentage achievement of 72.65%, and the technology aspect had a value of 1912 with a percentage achievement of 73.54%. Additionally, the average GPA value in the t-test showed a significance value of 2.61> t_0.05, indicating a very real effect of Chat GPT use on raising the average GPA value. As a result, measures must be taken to guarantee that this technology is exclusively utilized as a tool to help educators deliver better instruction.
