Abstract

This study investigates the forms, meanings, and social functions of slang expressions in the Indonesian television talk show Brownis on Trans TV, a program widely recognized for its humorous and informal interactions. Slang, as a dynamic variety of language, plays a central role in shaping youth identity and media discourse, yet its use in mainstream entertainment contexts remains underexplored. Employing a qualitative descriptive design with a content analysis approach, twenty episodes broadcast between May and June 2022 were purposively selected and transcribed. Data collection involved systematic observation and documentation, while the analytic procedure consisted of identifying slang items, classifying them into forms, interpreting their semantic dimensions, and analyzing their communicative functions. The findings revealed four primary forms of slang basic words, reduplications, abbreviations, and phrases with abbreviations and basic words being the most frequent. Semantically, slang operated at lexical, grammatical, terminological, and reflective levels, while functionally it facilitated social bonding, attracted attention, delivered satire, compressed expressions, enriched vocabulary, created intimacy, and generated humor. Frequency analysis showed that a few dominant terms such as gue, elo, and bucin coexisted with a wide range of less frequent but innovative expressions, as visualized through bar charts and word clouds. These outcomes suggest that televised discourse not only mirrors youth linguistic practices but also amplifies and legitimizes them, contributing to the diffusion of non-standard language in Indonesian society. The study contributes a novel perspective to sociolinguistic research by situating slang within entertainment media, with implications for cultural studies, language education, and media literacy, while also noting limitations in scope and duration that future research should address.

Abstract

This study investigates the representation of feminism and gender stereotypes in the short story anthology Perempuan Penakluk Ombak authored by the Rafflesia Writer Community. Employing a qualitative content analysis within a library research framework, the study analyzed textual excerpts to identify depictions of women’s struggles, rights, and societal roles. The findings revealed 36 instances of feminist representation that highlight positive values such as equality in education, civil rights, freedom of expression, association, and economic participation. In contrast, 24 instances of stereotypes portrayed women as weak, dependent, or objects of violence. Furthermore, 61 moral messages were identified, offering didactic lessons on empathy, responsibility, respect for parents, and resilience. These results contribute to feminist literary criticism by showing how local literary works both challenge and reinforce patriarchal discourses. The study implies that literature can serve as a medium of cultural negotiation and social critique, though further comparative research with broader corpora is recommended.

Abstract

This study explores the linguistic forms, symbolic meanings, and cultural functions of healing mantras among the Javanese Belumai II community in Padang Ulak Tanding, Rejang Lebong Regency, Bengkulu Province, Indonesia. Using a qualitative descriptive design, data were collected through observation of rituals, interviews with three practitioners, and documentation of recited mantras, followed by hermeneutic analysis. The results identify seven mantras employed for healing, including those addressing spirit disturbances, child protection, eye disease, toothache, abscess, headache, and sorcery-related illness. Structurally, the mantras appear in two forms: poetic free-verse and pantun with ABAB rhyme schemes, both framed by Islamic invocations such as Bismillahirrahmanirrahim and Lailahaillallah. Symbolically, they embody prayers for divine intervention, protective commands, metaphoric persuasion, and performative declarations that reinforce cultural belief in healing. These findings demonstrate that mantras function as both therapeutic expressions and cultural acts, sustaining intangible heritage and communal identity. Compared with earlier studies that focused mainly on ritual or symbolism, this research offers novelty by systematically integrating form and meaning in one community context. The study implies the importance of safeguarding oral traditions, supporting culturally sensitive health policies, and enriching educational curricula, while acknowledging limitations in scope and suggesting broader, interdisciplinary research.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of the Explicit Instruction learning model on the poetry writing skills of seventh-grade students at SMPN 19 Bengkulu, Indonesia. Employing a quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent control group, the study involved 30 students divided into experimental and control classes. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests to measure learning outcomes, supported by instrument validation and reliability testing (r₁₁ = 0.902). The results indicate that students in the experimental group achieved significantly higher post-test scores (M = 82.92) compared to the control group (M = 71.88). Independent sample t-test results confirmed a significant difference (t = 5.043, p < 0.05), suggesting that the Explicit Instruction model fosters more substantial improvement in poetry writing than conventional teaching methods. These findings underscore the pedagogical value of structured, teacher-guided approaches in enhancing literary expression among junior high school learners. Implications for curriculum design and teacher practice are discussed, alongside recommendations for future research.

Abstract

Adolescence is widely recognized as a critical developmental stage often associated with vulnerability to deviant behaviors, particularly when social and educational environments fail to provide adequate guidance. This study aims to examine the role of guidance and counseling teachers in addressing juvenile delinquency in Indonesian schools through a comprehensive library research approach. Data were collected and analyzed from scholarly articles, books, reports, and official documents using thematic content analysis to identify types, causes, and consequences of juvenile delinquency, as well as effective counseling interventions. The findings reveal that juvenile delinquency commonly manifests in four categories: acts causing physical harm, material losses, social deviance, and status-related violations, which are strongly influenced by family disharmony, peer pressure, weak self-control, and exposure to negative media. Guidance and counseling teachers play a pivotal role through preventive strategies (information services, group guidance, mediation), repressive measures (home visits, individual and group counseling), and curative approaches (case conferences, case referrals). These interventions not only mitigate immediate behavioral problems but also foster resilience, positive identity development, and academic engagement among students. The study contributes to the literature by emphasizing the underexplored role of school-based counseling in the Indonesian context and highlights its significance in shaping character education and preventing long-term social maladjustment. The findings imply that strengthening the capacity and recognition of school counselors is essential for sustainable educational development and for reducing youth delinquency rates in Indonesia and comparable settings.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of the Card Group learning model in improving student learning outcomes in Islamic Religious Education, specifically in the topic of “Glorifying Allah SWT by Submitting to His Commands.” Conducted with 26 seventh-grade students at SMPN 20 Bengkulu, the research employed classroom action research (CAR) across two cycles, each consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Data were collected using tests, observation, documentation, and interviews, and analyzed through descriptive statistics and percentage of mastery learning. Findings revealed a significant improvement in student outcomes: the average score increased from 54.23 (pre-cycle) to 76.08 (cycle I) and 80.81 (cycle II). Mastery learning rose from 15.38% (pre-cycle) to 80.78% (cycle I) and reached 100% in cycle II. The results confirm that the Card Group model enhances student engagement, promotes collaborative learning, and fosters deeper understanding of Islamic values. This research contributes to the growing body of literature on active learning strategies in religious education and provides practical implications for teachers seeking innovative methods to improve student achievement.

Abstract

The increasing influence of globalization has fostered individualism among young generations, often resulting in declining self-discipline, reduced empathy, and weakened social cohesion. This study investigates the representation of prosocial behavioral values embedded in the official Islamic Education and Character Education textbook for seventh-grade students (second semester), published by Indonesia’s Ministry of Education and Culture (Kurikulum 2013). Employing library research and qualitative content analysis, the study examined selected chapters of the revised 2017 edition. Findings indicate that the textbook incorporates diverse prosocial values, including empathy, altruism, generosity, cooperation, honesty, friendship, helping behavior, sacrifice, and charitable giving. These values are illustrated through narratives, Qur’anic verses, and Hadith that highlight moral exemplars such as Prophet Muhammad, Abu Bakr, and Umar ibn Khattab. The integration of prosocial values in Islamic education materials reflects the pedagogical intent to balance cognitive, affective, and moral development. However, the analysis also reveals limitations in the depth of contextualization, suggesting a need for more explicit strategies to connect values with students’ everyday realities. This study contributes to the discourse on value-based education and provides insights for curriculum developers, educators, and policymakers seeking to strengthen prosocial orientations among adolescents.
