Abstract

This study investigates the challenges faced by eighth-grade students at SMPN 06 Kaur in mastering English vocabulary, with a particular focus on identifying underlying factors that contribute to their difficulties. Employing a quantitative descriptive method, the research involved distributing a 25-item questionnaire to one class. Responses were analyzed using SPSS 26 to assess the students’ vocabulary comprehension. The findings reveal that, among 30 respondents, only a few achieved a score of 84—classified as “very good”—while the majority scored between 70 and 74, indicating a generally “good” level of vocabulary mastery. Despite this, the average frequency score across categories remained low, with only 1% of students reaching the maximum score. The data suggest that while most students possess a satisfactory understanding of English vocabulary, a subset continues to struggle, particularly with grammar and pronunciation. These challenges underscore the need for targeted pedagogical strategies that address specific linguistic weaknesses to enhance overall language proficiency.

Therefore, this development study reported on the designing process of an English reading module for grade X students of Islamic senior high school through ADDIE framework. This study was conducted through the phases of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The participants were 67 students and three English teachers from 9 Islamic senior high schools in Bengkulu City and three module validators. The instruments were subject-expert, student, and teacher questionnaires. The findings on need analyses revealed the students’ and teachers’ expectations on English reading modules containing Islamic values. As a follow-up, a reading module consisting of ten chapters with religious topics in genre-based texts were designed. The evaluation of the module demonstrated that from a 1.0 to 5.0 scale, the module received a score of 4.0 (categorized as good) by the media expert, 4.2 (categorized as excellent) by content and a language expert, 4.1 (categorized as good) by the three English teachers, and 4.3 (categorized as excellent) in a small group evaluation. To conclude, the English reading module is feasible for classroom use. The implication and recommendations for education stakeholders and future researchers are provided.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of the Explicit Instruction learning model on the poetry writing skills of seventh-grade students at SMPN 19 Bengkulu, Indonesia. Employing a quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent control group, the study involved 30 students divided into experimental and control classes. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests to measure learning outcomes, supported by instrument validation and reliability testing (r₁₁ = 0.902). The results indicate that students in the experimental group achieved significantly higher post-test scores (M = 82.92) compared to the control group (M = 71.88). Independent sample t-test results confirmed a significant difference (t = 5.043, p < 0.05), suggesting that the Explicit Instruction model fosters more substantial improvement in poetry writing than conventional teaching methods. These findings underscore the pedagogical value of structured, teacher-guided approaches in enhancing literary expression among junior high school learners. Implications for curriculum design and teacher practice are discussed, alongside recommendations for future research.

Abstract

This study explores the TPACK of EFL teachers in two distinct school districts during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study comprised two English teachers from rural and urban schools in Bengkulu, Indonesia, with 2 to 10 years of experience teaching English. The researchers collected the data utilizing an interview-based comparative descriptive methodology to address research questions. Following the interview, the collected data was transcribed. The findings of this study indicate that urban teachers have a higher level of TPACK than rural teachers in terms of their ability to use technology and manage classes when teaching English during the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly concerning online learning applications such as Zoom meetings, WhatsApp, Google Classroom, and the YouTube app.On the other hand, rural EFL teachers have insufficient TPACK. Due to a lack of time to design technology lesson plans, technology training, and inadequate supporting facilities and infrastructure, such as limited internet network availability and power outages, teachers lack knowledge of technological advances for online learning. Even though teachers in rural and urban areas had never utilized an online learning system during the previous school year, they had varying capacities for addressing problems that developed while utilizing this system.
