Abstract

This study aims to find out the equivalence of the meaning of the translation of the songs “Mine” and “Milikku” by Petra Sihombing from English to Indonesian, both of which were written by the songwriters themselves. The approach used is a qualitative descriptive approach. The problem faced is the difference in the number of syllables or syllables needed to convey the message in the sentence as a whole with the availability or limitation of syllables in the melody of the song. The method used refers to the translation method according to Mona Baker, which emphasizes the level of equivalence of the meaning of the target language (TL). Two songs that have been translated by the songwriters themselves are used with two different song versions. The results of the study show that the song cannot be translated perfectly into the target language, but the songwriter can translate it as close as possible to the equivalent meaning into the target language by looking at the equivalence of words and meanings, the structure of the song, and the impact of the song on listeners in the target language. so that the message in the song can be conveyed properly.

Abstract

This article examines the meaning in Zoe Wees' song "Girls Like Us" through semiotic analysis, highlighting the representation of issues faced by women in the current cultural and social context. In this research, the researcher uses a qualitative descriptive method to collect data from various sources such as books, e-books, journals, and internet news sources, and applies a quantitative algorithm using NVivo 14 Plus for word frequency analysis in the lyrics of "Girls Like Us." The analysis shows that the song “Girls Like Us” depicts the emotional and psychological struggles of women. Semiotic analysis of dominant words such as “know,” “like,” “girls,” and “hard” reveals themes of identity search, social challenges, and resilience. These words reflect Zoe's personal experiences while also representing the conditions faced by many young women worldwide. Through symbols and metaphors like “red lights in the darkness” and “heart in a cage,” Wees portrays feelings of loneliness, uncertainty, and the desire for recognition and acceptance. The message in these lyrics highlights the importance of understanding and empathy towards women's struggles, both in social and emotional contexts.

Abstract

Sustainable heritage tourism increasingly depends on the capacity of local communities to act as effective cultural mediators, yet limited attention has been given to the role of foreign language competence as a mechanism of empowerment within heritage institutions. In many heritage destinations, tour guides are expected to communicate complex cultural meanings to international visitors, but insufficient linguistic resources may constrain their professional agency and the quality of heritage interpretation. This study aims to examine how foreign language capacity building functions as a form of community empowerment in a heritage tourism context, with specific reference to heritage tour guides at the Keraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat, Indonesia. The study adopted a qualitative case study design. Data was collected through systematic observations of training sessions and guided tours, reflective discussions with participating guides, and analysis of training materials and institutional documents. The data were analyzed thematically, guided by empowerment theory and communicative competence theory. The findings indicate that foreign language training enhanced guides’ communicative confidence, interpretive depth, and intercultural awareness. Participants demonstrated greater flexibility in responding to visitor inquiries, improved narrative coherence in explaining cultural and historical meanings, and stronger perceptions of professional legitimacy as cultural representatives. While the training primarily supported psychological and social dimensions of empowerment, it contributed indirectly to cultural sustainability by strengthening heritage mediation practices. These findings suggest that foreign language capacity building has significant implications for sustainable heritage tourism and the operationalization of Sustainable Development Goal 11. Integrating language training into heritage management and community development initiatives can support more inclusive, high quality, and culturally grounded tourism practices.
