Abstract

This research aims at describing the reasons, mechanism and forms of self-repair as well as describing the relationship between  the employment of self-repair and SBY as the speaker. Data of the research were SBY’s utterances in an exclusive interview called “Saatnya SBY Bicara” broadcasted by Metro TV. Data were transcribed and analyzed carefully using qualitative method as the main method and quantitative method as the supporting method to provide frequency of data occurance. The research findings show that there are two main reasons of the employment of self-repair by SBY, they are the problems of speaking and understanding. Two mechanism of self-repair found are self-initiated self-repair (SISR) and other-initiated self-repair (OISR). In the mechanism of SISR, SBY employs three forms of repair (R), they are word search, word/phrase replacing, and explanation. These three forms of repair are preceded by two forms of repair-initiation (RI), they are lexical markers and non-lexical markers. In the mechanism of OISR, SBY employs four forms of repair (R), they are accepting, rejecting, explaining and limiting statement. These four forms of repair are preceded by three forms of repair-initiation (RI), they are clarification, non-understanding, and interpretation. The employment of self-repair reflects SBY as the speaker, such as SBY as a competent and careful person, and SBY as  a polite person who tries to maintain good relationship with others and not to hurt others’ feeling.

Abstract

Drawing from Discursive Social Psychology (DSP) (Potter, 1998; Potter Edwards, 2001), this study is concerned with how attitudes, behaviours, and identity can be observed through language in use or discourse. Focusing on the narratives of the marginalized Chinese Indonesians, it particularly aims at revealing behaviours in coping with the majority group, and how such behaviours may in turn shape intergroup relations and ethnic identity. The data were in the form of narratives of personal experience of Chinese Indonesians collected through interview which were then scrutinized through in-depth analysis within their socio-political context. It has been revealed that in dealing with unequal power relations, two behaviours are embraced – convergence and divergence – which are manifested in various discursive and social practices of adapting to the wider society and maintaining aspects of ethnic identity. Any choice of behaviours can have consequences for interethnic relations and ethnic identity. The ideological power exercised by different regimes has obviously constructed ethnic identity and thus made it historically and ideologically contested. The contestation is discursively articulated through the negotiation between ethnic and national identity, the labelling practice using the words Cina and Tionghoa, and the perpetuation of stereotypes associated with the ethnic group. Keywords:  ethnicity, discourse, identity, social-psychology

Abstract

Abstract: The urgency for developing students’ critical thinking (CT) abilities has left English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers trying hard to integrate CT into their teaching practices. This study highlights the role of language as a way of thinking, judging and assessing. It seeks to investigate how the elements of CT are displayed in students’ essay so as to reveal the development of their CT skills. The data are in the form of essay written by the fourth semester Indonesian students taking essay writing course. The analysis is based on Stapleton’s   criteria of CT (2001), i.e. claims, kinds  of  reasoning,  the  extent  of   evidence,  recognition  of  opposing  arguments  and  refutation,  and  fallacies. The results show that there are many weak arguments in the essays due to the insufficiency of reasons and evidence. It is highly possible for an essay to have multiple arguments. However, the logical correlations between them are not clearly articulated in the essays and many students fail to show them. Students also lack of refutation skills as they tend to accept a claim from other sources without trying to judge and evaluate it. While most conclusions are in the form of suggestion, they can be made better by clearly showing the position of the writer in relation the arguments posed in the essay. Fallacies are mostly found in the form of generalization and over-simplification. The results are expected to give insights to teachers about how CT skills could be effectively taught and improved in writing classes. Keywords: argumentative writing, critical thinking (CT), English as a Foreign Language (EFL)Mengembangkan Kemampuan Berpikir Kritis Melalui Menulis Argumentatif Abstrak: Pentingnya mengembangkan kemampuan berpikir kritis (critical thinking atau CT) mahasiswa telah membuat para pengajar English as a Foreign Language (EFL) berusaha keras mengintegrasikan kemampuan berpikir kritis dalam pengajaran mereka. Kata kunci: tulisan argumentatif, berpikir kritis, English as Foreign Language (EFL)

Abstract

The #2019gantipresiden movement was a new agenda of the opposition to win the 2019 presidential election. There were many rejections of these movements. The media reported these rejections with different language style so as to articulate their ideologies. The goal of this research is to explain the attitude of mainstream media toward the rejections of #2019gantipresiden and how ideology plays a role in discourse production. This research used CDA with the appraisal system approach to analyze linguistic features. The data in this research were taken from three different online news media, CNN Indonesia, Detik, and Kompas. The data of this research were collected by selected purposive sampling: three tops of news report were chosen in ‘Google search engine’ of each media. The data analysis was done through referential, substitutional and abductive inference method. The result shows that CNN and Kompas marginalize the #2019gantipresiden movement in reporting the rejection while Detik more neutral. CNN was more focused on describing the #2019gantipresiden movement by negative evaluation while others more focused on reporting the rejection. Furthermore, CNN used explicit, provocative, sharp and straightforward language styles; Detik used neutral, emphatic, careful, and objective language styles; Kompas used deep and clear analysis and more delicate language styles in reporting the rejection of the #2019gantipresiden movement.(Gerakan #2019gantipresiden adalah agenda baru pihak oposisi untuk memenangkan pemilihan presiden 2019. Abstract

Considerable work on contrastive text analysis of abstracts has been conducted between English and other languages to explore the uniqueness between them. However, as far as methodology and language pair are concerned, there remains a paucity of research between English and Indonesian abstracts, and, in particular, in the usage of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) for the purposes of translation. Using annotated and manually collated comparable corpora of abstracts collected from English and Indonesian academic articles (Bulletin of Indonesian Economic Studies-ANU and DINAMIKA-UNES), this study aims to contrast textual profiles of English and Indonesian abstracts in the field of economics. Based on the results of the analysis on the three metafunction in language at the stratum of lexico- grammar, this study suggests that marked differences between the comparable corpora of English and Indonesian abstracts are in the experiential and textual meanings. The implication of this study is that abstract translators from Indonesian into English need to pay a closer attention to the two metafunction in order to attempt an acceptable English translation.

Abstract

Translating interjections is notoriously challenging. Aside from their ambiguous and context-dependent meanings, they also express emotions through broadly suggestive sensations, attitudes, and states of mind. This study attempts to uncover emotional meanings embedded in cognitive interjections, the conversion strategies of cognitive interjections, and how the conversion strategies affect correspondence and equivalence. The data were interjective expressions in the classic English literature entitled "Charlotte's Web" and its Indonesian translation "Laba-Laba and Jaring Kesayangannya", which were scrutinized using content-based mixed methods. The emotional meanings were explored using Jovanović’s (2004) theory. The conversion was identified by cultivating Cuenca (2006)'s and Baker (1992)’s proposals. Meanwhile, the implication of the conversions was observed by considering formal correspondence and meaning equivalence. The results suggest that: first, different types of emotional meaning are found in both ST and TT, i.e. anger, disagreement, enquiry, ensurement, hesitation, irritation, pleasure, realization, relief, soothe, and triumph. Second, four conversion strategies are deployed by the translator from English to Indonesian version, i.e. (1) conversion using a similar form and meaning; (2) conversion using a similar form, meaning, and literal translation (triplets) and (3) the conversion through deletion, with the first one as the most often used. Third, while the first two conversions were applicable for producing equivalent expressions, whereas the translator, on the whole, maintains a formal correspondence that equalizes the meaning, the last results in some degree of emotional meaning deviations. This study has demonstrated how inappropriate strategies of rendering interjections may cause distortion of the author’s original idea and ruin or reduce the emotional expressiveness in the text. Keywords: conversion, cognitive interjections, literary translation, translation equivalence

Abstract

Group work in language learning has been praised for its success stories in encouraging collaboration and interaction among learners. However, a scant attention has been given to explore how students perceive the Other and how group work can be a platform for identity construction. Within the context of EFL classroom where different cultures and values interact, this study focuses on students' preference towards group work and peers, which is reflected through their perception and behaviours towards different attributes of the constructed Self and Other. The data were collected through questionnaires involving 241 students of English Literature Study Program at a state university in Indonesia. The results show that, first, despite the challenges to embrace difference among the members, group work is still preferred over individual work for the advantages, productivity, and enjoyment it offers. Second, while friendship is seen as a crucial contributor for a successful group work, students choose peers based on personalities and skills on English language, teamwork, communication, leadership, and technology. This preference motivates stereotyping and othering, whereby the good characteristics of the preferred Self are contrasted with the bad qualities of the dis-preferred Other. This study has proven that subtle othering prevails in group work practices in the academic environment and that such othering practices have influenced students' behaviours, roles, and abilities to engage and succeed in group work. Pedagogical attempts should be devoted to decrease othering, so as to foster awareness towards difference, in order to create a more accommodative environment for language learning.

Abstract

Abstract. Student success is one of key goals of higher education, thus necessary steps are taken to identify how it can be achieved. However, students vary in their ability and performance in completing their studies with various factors attributing to these variations. This study offers identification of the factors within the context of English language program. Examining students’ perception, it attempts to reveal ways in which personal, internal, and external factors and different stages of study may interact to influence student's academic performance. The primary data was a Google Form Questionnaire to 217 students (n=217) of the English literature study program in a state university in Yogyakarta. Through descriptive statistics, the Likert Rating Scale data were analyzed using R. Qualitative data underwent reduction, categorization, and representation using R Qualitative Data Analysis (RQDA). Findings reveal that the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) satisfied the goodness of fit criterion. The linear regression analysis using the variables from the CFA model revealed that University Learning Facilities, Liking one’s study program, Courses meeting students’ expectations, and Student's Interest in the courses explained 51.31% of the variation (R-squared=0.513) in Students' Academic Performance. However, lecturers negatively impact students’ success, alongside factors like mental health. Further research through in-depth interviews with alumni could establish a more supportive academic system. Keywords: CFA, EFA, student’s academic performance, motivation factors, obstructing factors

Abstract

News production is a discursive act and a value-laden process through which media reports social issues using various stances to articulate certain ideologies. However, how reporters construct their stance and relationship with their readers has yet to significantly be an object of systematic investigation. This study sheds some light on the attitude of The Jakarta Post towards the spread of Omicron to reveal the media’s stances and ideological positions, in which certain interests play a role in discourse production. The principles of appraisal system and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) were deployed to examine 25 news articles about Omicron. The results reveal how language construes attitude and enables writers to position themselves evaluatively in certain aspects. While politically it deploys attitudinal resources to portray its neutral position, economically The Jakarta Post discloses itself as a media that accommodates its plural readers to maximize advertising revenue and reading traffic. This ideological stance is interpreted in light of the socio-political dimension that shapes news reporting.
