Abstract

Background of the problem: Reading comprehension is a fundamental skill in learning, yet many students have difficulty in mastering it. Conventional learning methods are often less effective in increasing student engagement, so innovative learning models are needed. Purpose: To examine the effectiveness of STAD learning model in improving students' reading comprehension in grade VII at junior school South Halmahera. Method: This study used pre-experiment method with one-group pre-test and post-test design. The research sample consisted of 30 students, who were selected using cluster sampling techniques. Data was collected through reading comprehension tests before and after the application of the STAD model. Data analysis was conducted using t-test to measure the significance of differences in pre-test and post-test results. Result: The pre-test mean score was 55.30, while the post-test mean score increased to 77.40. The t-test result (19.55) was greater than the t-table (1.699) at a significant level of 0.05 with a degree of freedom (df) of 29. This shows that there is a significant increase in reading comprehension after the application of the STAD model. Implication: The results of this study indicate that the STAD learning model can be used as an effective strategy to improve students' reading comprehension. Therefore, it is recommended for educators to apply this model in learning to improve student learning outcomes, as well as develop further research to see its effectiveness in other subjects.

Abstract

Background of the problem: Inventory of sweet soy sauce raw materials from sorghum continues to increase every year. This spike is influenced by the increasing frequency of ordering sweet soy sauce products from consumers. Purpose: To analyze the difference between the inventory costs incurred by the company using the Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) method. Method: Case study; the data are the operations managers' interviews. Data analysis was performed using the EOQ method. Result: The cost savings for inventory costs in 2022 were 37% for premium sweet soy sauce and 60.69% for ordinary soy sauce; in 2023 it could save 40.50% for premium sweet soy sauce and 59.40% for ordinary sweet soy sauce. And in 2024, it can save inventory control of premium sweet soy sauce by 67.04% and ordinary sweet soy sauce by 74.70%, according to the EOQ method. The EOQ method is considered more efficient in determining the cost of raw materials for a company's expenditure. Implication: The findings also have broad relevance and can be applied to other companies in the food and beverage industry sector that face similar challenges in managing raw materials.

Abstract

Cultural heritage tourism increasingly requires skilled human mediation to ensure meaningful intercultural exchange and sustainable development. However, many heritage tour guides, particularly those operating within traditional cultural institutions, face limitations in foreign language competence that hinder effective communication with international visitors. Responding to this challenge, this study investigates a foreign language training program implemented for tour guides at Kawedhanan Hageng Panitrapura, Karaton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat, Indonesia, and examines its role in community empowerment and local realization of the Sustainable Development Goals. The study aims to analyze how contextually grounded multilingual training contributes to guides’ communicative competence, professional confidence, and cultural representation. A qualitative case study design was employed, drawing on data from post training questionnaires, non-participant observations, and participant reflective feedback involving 22 active heritage tour guides. Data were analyzed thematically using an interpretive framework informed by communicative competence theory, empowerment theory, and education for sustainable development. The findings reveal that the training enhanced participants’ basic communicative abilities in English, French, and German, increased their confidence in interacting with foreign visitors, and strengthened their perception of multilingualism as cultural and professional capital. Contextual and communicative learning activities were identified as particularly effective, while online delivery-imposed constraints on oral interaction and sustained engagement. Beyond linguistic outcomes, the program fostered a stronger sense of professional identity and cultural responsibility among participants. The study concludes that foreign language training embedded within a traditional royal institution can function as a meaningful empowerment mechanism and contribute to multiple Sustainable Development Goals. It highlights the importance of culturally grounded, institutionally legitimate, and partnership-based approaches to language education in heritage tourism contexts.
