Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui: 1) Pengaruh kebiasaan membaca dan penguasaan kosakata secara bersama-sama terhadap kemampuan membaca teks prosedur bahasa Inggris. 2) Pengaruh kebiasaan membaca terhadap kemampuan membaca teks prosedur bahasa Inggris. 3) Pengaruh penguasaan kosakata terhadap kemampuan membaca teks prosedur bahasa Inggris. Metode dalam penelitian ini adalah survei. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII SMP Swasta di Jakarta Timur dengan besar sampel sebanyak 90 siswa yang diambil secara acak dari siswa SMP Widya Manggala Jakarta Timur dan siswa SMP Kuntum Wijaya Kusuma Jakarta Timur. Penelitian dilaksanakan pada bulan September-November 2019. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah angket kebiasaan membaca, nilai tes penguasaan kosakata dan nilai tes kemampuam membaca teks prosedur bahasa Inggris. Analisis dilakukan dengan metode regresi linear ganda. Hasil pengujian hipotesis diperoleh kesimpulan sebagai berikut: 1) Terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan kebiasaan membaca dan penguasaan kosakata secara bersama-sama terhadap kemampuan membaca teks prosedur bahasa Inggris siswa SMP Swasta di Jakarta Timur. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan perolehan nilai Sig = 0,000 < 0,05 dan Fhitung = 6,885. 2) Terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan kebiasaan membaca terhadap kemampuan membaca teks prosedur bahasa Inggris siswa SMP Swasta di Jakarta Timur. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan perolehan nilai Sig = 0,001 < 0,05 dan thitung = 3,412. 3) Terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan penguasaan kosakata terhadap kemampuan membaca teks prosedur bahasa Inggris siswa SMP Swasta di Jakarta Timur. Hal ini dapat dibuktikan dengan perolehan nilai Sig = 0,042 < 0,05 dan thitung = 2,062. Berdasarkan pada hasil penelitian di atas, bahwa kebiasaan membaca dan penguasaan kosakata memberikan pengaruh yang berarti terhadap kemampuan membaca teks prosedur bahasa Inggris siswa.Kata Kunci:  Kebiasaan Membaca, Penguasaan Kosakata, Kemampuan Membaca Teks Prosedur Bahasa Inggris

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian adalah untuk mengetahui 1) Pengaruh minat baca terhadap kemampuan memahami teks report bahasa Inggris siswa SMPN di Kabupaten Indramayu. 2) Pengaruh penguasaan kosakata terhadap kemampuan memahami teks report bahasa Inggris siswa SMPN di Kabupaten Indramayu. 3) Pengaruh minat baca dan penguasaan kosakata terhadap kemampuan memahami teks report bahasa Inggris siswa SMPN di Kabupaten Indramayu. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah survey dengan teknik analisis jalur. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII di SMP Negeri di Kabupaten Indramayu yang berjumlah 800 siswa. Sampel yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini berjumlah 89 siswa. Hasil penelitian menyimpulkan: 1) Tidak terdapat pengaruh langsung yang signifikan minat baca terhadap kemampuan memahami teks report bahasa Inggris  siswa SMP Negeri di Kabupaten Indramayu.  Hal tersebut dapat dibuktikan dengan nilai thitung = 1,486 < ttabel = 1,980. 2) Terdapat pengaruh langsung yang signifikan penguasaan kosakata  terhadap kemampuan memahami teks report bahasa Inggris siswa SMP Negeri di Kabupaten Indramayu. Hal tersebut dapat dibuktikan oleh nilai thitung = 5,320 > ttabel = 1,980. 3) Terdapat pengaruh langsung yang signifikan minat baca terhadap penguasaan kosakata siswa SMP Negeri di Jakarta Pusat . Hal tersebut dapat dibuktikan oleh nilai thitung = 3,632 > ttabel = 1,980. 4) Terdapat pengaruh tidak langsung yang tidak signifikan minat baca terhadap kemampuan memahami teks report bahasa Inggris melalui penguasaan kosakata siswa SMP Negeri di Kabupaten Indramayu. Hal ini dibuktikan oleh nilai thitung = 0,183 > ttabel = 1,980.

Abstract

This research was aimed to analyze an educational value and defence mechanism in life of pi novel by Yann Martel. Life of Pi is an award-winning novel written by Yann Martel, a Canadian author. The novel depicts the topic of struggle for life and against death in an emergency situation. It tells about the struggle of an Indian boy who spent 227 days with a fierce tiger in the Pacific Ocean, and as the sole survivor in a shipwreck that killed his family. There are two problems are formulated to guide and limit the discussion in this study. The first problem examines the description of the educational value, the second problem examines the defence mechanism in that novel. The methodology of this research is descriptive qualitative method. All of the data are gathered by reading the novel, identifying, classifying, and reducing the data. The primary data of the study are in the form of monologues and dialogues of the novel itself. The primary data is supported by secondary data that is taken from books, journals, articles, essays, and sites that relate to the study. The selected data is interpreted into understandable meaning by descriptive technique. The result of the research finds that educational value in life of pi novel: he is intelligent, he was able to enter the best secondary school in his town and later achieved top grades as a university student; open- minded, He is open-minded in his way of thinking; spiritual, He practices three religions with the reason that he wants to love God; and has strong determination, He has a strong will and he does not give up or become desperate easily. The defence mechanism carried out by Pi Patel: by recognizing and using his strength, which is made possible by his intelligence; by being realistic about the situation, which is facilitated by his open- mindedness; and by adopting positive attitude, which is facilitated by his spirituality and strong determination.

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to know the effect of vocabulary mastery and grammar toward the ability to write the English descriptive text. The research hypothesis tested include: 1) The influence of vocabulary mastery and grammar toward the ability to write the English descriptive text, 2) The influence of vocabulary mastery toward the ability to write the English descriptive text, 3) The influence of grammar mastery toward the ability to write the English descriptive text. The research method used is survey; the sample is 60 students of class X that chosen from two schools of SMA Negeri which are in Bogor. Data collection was conducted by multiple choices and essay test, data analysis used in this research is Regression Analysis Model to know the influence of independent variable with dependent variable. The statistical test used Test t and Test F. The results showed: 1) There is a significant influence of vocabulary mastery and grammar toward the ability to write the English descriptive text of senior high school students in Bogor. This is evidenced by the acquisition of Sig value 0,000 < 0,05 dan  = 54,363. 2) There is a significant influence of vocabulary mastery toward the ability to write the English descriptive text of senior high school students in Bogor. This is evidenced by the acquisition of Sig value 0,000 < 0,05 dan  = 4,704. 3) There is a significant influence of vocabulary grammar toward the ability to write the English descriptive text of senior high school students in Bogor. This is evidenced by the acquisition of Sig value Sig. = 0,000 < 0,05 dan  = 5,260. Keywords: Vocabulary mastery, Grammar mastery, Ability to write English descriptive text. Abstrak: Pengaruh Penguasaan Kosakata dan Tata Bahasa terhadap Keterampilan Menulis Teks Deskriptif Bahasa Inggris. (Survei pada SMA Negeri di Kabupaten Bogor). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh Penguasaan Kosakata dan Tata Bahasa terhadap Keterampilan Menulis Teks Deskriptif Bahasa Inggris. Hipotesis penelitian yang diuji meliputi: 1) Pengaruh penguasaan kosakata dan tata bahasa terhadap keterampilan menulis teks deskriptif bahasa Inggris. 2) Pengaruh penguasaan kosakata terhadap keterampilan menulis teks deskriptif bahasa Inggris. 3) Pengaruh penguasaan tata bahasa terhadap keterampilan menulis teks deskriptif bahasa Inggris. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah survei, sampel dilakukan pada 60 siswa kelas X dari dua SMA Negeri yang ada di wilayah Kabupaten Bogor. Pengumpulan data dilaksanakan dengan tes berbentuk pilihan ganda dan uraian, analisis data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Model Analisis Regresi untuk mengetahui pengaruh dari variabel bebas dengan variabel terikat. Uji statistik dipergunakan Uji t dan Uji F. Abstract

The textbooks play an important role in teaching and learning activity in language program. Because of the various textbooks provided, textbook analysis is seen as an important thing to be conducted in order to find out how the components of the textbook are served. This study was aimed to investigate to what extent the English textbook entitled “Bahasa Inggris: When English Rings a Bell” for eighth grade students meet the criteria of BSNP (linguistic features and presentation of materias). The linguistic features consist of language appropriateness while the presentation of materials consist of content appropriates, presentation appropriateness, and graphic appropriateness. This study was descriptive qualitative approach. The instrument used to collect the data is document study used in the form of checklist. A checklist was made adopted from BSNP (2011) framework. The results of this study showed that textbook entitled “When English Rings a Bell” for Eight Grade is suitable to be used in teaching learning process. The textbook achieved the fulfilment score of language appropriateness (100%), content appropriateness (81,25%), presentation appropriateness (88,89%), and graphics appropriateness (97,64%). This book is categorized “good” textbook by achieving the score of 95,07%. Thus, it can be concluded that textbook is suitable to be used in order to help the teaching learning process in the classroom with the help of other sources and teacher improvisation.

Abstract

This study uses an experimental method, namely by giving different treatments to two student learning groups. The population in this study were private Madrasah Aliyah students in the district. Karawang in the 2019/2020 academic year totaling ?500 students. The results there are 1). There is a significant influence of cooperative learning methods on the English reading comprehension of private Madrasah Aliyah students in the district. Karawang. This is evidenced by the sig value of 0,000 <0.05, with Fcount = 15.638. 2). There is a significant influence in the mastery of vocabulary on the understanding of English reading of Madrasah Aliyah Private students in the district. Karawang. This evidenced by the sig value of 0.047 <0.05, with Fcount = 4.058. 3). There is a significant interactive influence on cooperative learning methods and vocabulary mastery of English students’ reading comprehension of Madrasah Aliyah Private in the district. Karawang. This is evidenced by the sig value of 0.016 <0.05, with Fcount = 6.062. The use of cooperative learning methods and the use of vocabulary can influence students’ higher comprehension of English reading.

Abstract

The aim of the research is to know the use of simple past tense verb and personal pronoun in writing recount text. The method of this research is Dulay’s Surface Strategy Taxonomy. The result of the classification was calculated by the frequency and the percentage of each error: 1) The error of simple Past Tense Verb is 247which consist of, the lowest is 14 errors or 5,6% % for Misordering, 18 errors or 38,2 % for addition, 59 errors or 23,8% for omission and The highest 156 errors or 63,1% for Misinformation. 2) The error of using Pronouns in writing recount text the writer found the total error is 17. The highest error is misordering which consists of 14 errors or 82,3%, the second error is misinformation  consist of 2 errors or 11,7%. The third error is addition consist of 1 errors or 5,8%, and the last place is omission, it is there is no found error.

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to know the effect of students' perception on learning technique and learning motivation towards students' speaking skills. The research methodology is a descriptive survey and using a questionnaire as data collection. The number of the samples is three classes from two state vocational high schools. The result of the research shows that; 1). There is a significant effect of students' perception on learning technique and learning motivation jointly toward students' speaking skills. The score of Sig proves that 0,000 < 0,05 and F0 = 47.152. Both variables, student's perception of learning technique and learning motivation, had contributed 62.3 % to the student's speaking skill. 2). There is a significant effect of student's perception on learning technique toward the student's speaking skill. The score of Sig proves 0,000 < 0,05 and t0 = 4.555. 3). There is a significant effect of the learning motivation towards the student's speaking skills. It is proved by Sig. = 0,000 < 0,05 and t0 = 4,528. Having a good perception of learning techniques and high learning motivation will improve student's speaking skills better.Keywords: student's perception, learning technique, motivation, speaking skill.

Abstract

This current study aims to determine: 1) The effects of interest in reading and vocabulary mastery together towards English learning achievement. 2) The Effect of interest in reading English learning achievement. 3) The Effect of vocabulary mastery towards English learning achievement. The method used surveys, the observed population of this research is students from state senior high schools in Districts Tangerang. The 88 samples were gained through cluster proportional and random sampling. The analysis used is multiple linear regression. The results of the study show: 1) there are significant effects of interest in reading and vocabulary mastery altogether towards English learning achievement.  It is proved by Sig.= 0.000 < 0.05 and Fobserved = 9.063; 2). There is a significant effect of interest in reading towards English learning achievement. It is proved by Sig.= 0.005 < 0.05 and tobserved = 2.865; 3) There is a significant effect of vocabulary mastery towards English learning achievement. It is proved by Sig.= 0.000 < 0.05 and tobserved = 4.206. Key Words: reading interest; vocabulary mastery; English learning achievement
