Abstract

The research is conducted to identify issues of sentence structure and paragraph building in academic writing ability. The objectives are to identify the most and the least common problems found in both variables. The data are sixty paragraphs of freshmen of three faculties of a state university in Depok, West Java. Descriptive analysis and Content analysis are the two methods which are used to analyze the data. The findings of the research are divided into two groups: Sentence Structure Problems and Paragraph building problems. For the first category the most common problems are the inappropriate use of Grammar Points, Lexical Units, and Cohesive Device, and the least are Punctuation, Run-On, and Stringy sentences. In the scope of paragraph building, not providing supporting details and irrelevant sentences are the most common problems; as for the least problems are irrelevant sentences and transition sentences.

Abstract

Abstract. This study aims to present the number and percentage of errors in using simple past tense and conjunction in writing recount text. The method used in this research is the descriptive qualitative method. This study's objects were 35 students of 12th (12th) grade 1 (one) of Link and Match Vocational School. This study's results are 179 findings (82%) errors in using simple past tense and 39 findings (18%) errors in using a conjunction. Keywords: error analysis; simple past tense; conjunction; recount text

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to describe the problems in the patriarchal society and prove the optimistic realism contained in the novel “A Golden Web” by Barbara Quick and how female characters were portrayed in the 18th century. The method to analyze the novel is content analysis and literature review from books and theories related to the novel and historical records. Using a new criticism approach, this paper examines the intrinsic elements of the story. The writer studies the elements through characters and characterizations using descriptive-analytical structures. The paper ends with descriptions of character and characterization, optimism realism, and how female characters in the 18th-century novel’ contained can be revealed.Keywords: realism; patriarchy; optimism; new criticism

Abstract

Film is one of the media frequently used by many people. This research aims to utilize films as a learning medium for students who want to understand foreign cultures, gain advanced literacy skills in English, and learn correct pronunciation. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins contains moral messages and cultural values. In this research, the author discusses the moral messages according to Suseno's theory and the cultural values according to Koentjaraningrat's theory contained in the film, and analyzes them using a qualitative descriptive method by explaining data derived from film excerpts.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to examine the correlation between students' reading interest and vocabulary mastery as they relate to their reading comprehension. This study utilised a quantitative methodology and a survey as its instrument. The data acquisition methodology involved the utilisation of a questionnaire and a test. The assessment is employed to gather data pertaining to students' reading comprehension and vocabulary mastery, while the questionnaire gathers information regarding students' reading interests. An examination of the hypotheses was conducted using multiple regression analysis. The following are the investigation findings: 1) The combined impact of vocabulary mastery and students' reading interest on students' reading comprehension is statistically significant, as indicated by the Fcount value of 31.628 and the significance level of Sig 0.000, which is less than 0.05. 2) Vocabulary mastery has a substantial impact on the reading comprehension of pupils, as demonstrated by the obtained score and Sig 0.000 < 0.05 and tcount = 5.677. 3) Students' reading comprehension is significantly impacted by their reading interest, as indicated by Sig 0.000 < 0.05 and tcount = 4.492.
