International Assulta of Research and Engagement (IARE) is a blind peer-reviewed journal published by Edujavare Publishing, Indonesia. This journal publishes research articles, conceptual articles, field study reports and book reviews on all scopes of education (See Focus and Scope). This journal article is published two times a year; 2 issues per year (June and December). Focus and Scope IARE: International Assulta of Research and Engagement (IARE) is an open access, refereed journal that responds to an emerging global movement of collaborative, critical and change-oriented community-university research initiatives. IARE provides an inclusive forum for faculty, staff, students, professional practitioners and community representatives to explore issues and reflect on methodological practices relating to the full range of engaged activity. Articles include empirical case studies; analyses of partnership models, practices and processes; and theoretical reflections that contribute to the scholarship of engagement. A central aspect of community-based research and practice is that it seeks to drive change - social, intellectual, institutional. As such, IARE encourages innovative, mutually beneficial and culturally competent research approaches to conceptualising, designing, undertaking and communicating engaged research. Articles will not only bridge disciplinary boundaries but will seek to challenge traditional binaries of academic and non-academic knowledge systems by rigorously combining different ways of knowing and being. IARE welcomes articles that articulate and interrogate the complex tensions that exist between theory and practice, and between the various participants in the research enterprise, as well as advance the value of research that is driven by need as much as curiosity. Further, IARE is avowedly international in scope, actively seeking to make the journal a space for diverse voices and perspectives, in multiple forms and modes and from across different geographies. As an open access journal, IARE’ mission is to increase the timely, accessible and inclusive sharing of new knowledge and valuable insights from current practice to scholars, community leaders, practitioners and activists around the world. In this way, IARE strives to contribute to, and help build this active, evolving and critical global dialogue for change. Note on the Journal Sections: In establishing the format for IARE, the Editorial Committee sought to fulfil two goals: one, to create space for more chairs at the research table; and two, to expand the research table itself. That is, not just more, but different. For this reason, three article sections have been established: research; practice-based; and snapshots. In every instance, the focus is on including only high-quality articles on community-university engagement that meet the journal’s focus and scope. The Research articles (Refereed) section provides peer and institutional recognition of community-based research and scholarship. An important aspect of these peer-reviewed articles is that they critically consider the contribution made by the research to the literature – does it challenge, expand, renew? The Practice-based articles (Non-refereed) section of the journal focuses on excellence in the reporting and reflection on engagement in practice. By championing the intellectual rigor and craft of experiential-focused contributions, practice-based articles fundamentally complement the research articles. Finally, the Snapshots section (Non-refereed) is designed to showcase the rich variety of knowledge, experience and impressions by all stakeholders in community-university collaborations. This section is particularly geared to those new to research and/or sharing their knowledge and practice in an English-language journal setting. In addition, creative use of visuals, video and audio are welcome, in all sections. All sections are published together as one volume of the journal.

Abstract

Fish is the biggest asset in Lako Akelamo Village, West Halmahera Regency . Since Lako Akelamo Village was formed, the majority of villagers work as fishermen due to the abundance of fish resources in Lako Akelamo Village. This is proven through an interview with the Department of Food Security, Agriculture and Fisheries Unit 1 which stated that in the past two years, more precisely in 2019-2022, Sahu was one of the contributors to the largest fish catch in North Maluku for two consecutive years. However, usually the villagers pass through the catch of fish they can usually sell directly to agents who come to the village or sell it to the markets directly. In facts, the fish caught can be processed into high-value food and become an alternatives to improve the economy and public health in general. Thus, through a program of processing fish into varied and productive food, skills can be improved so that's it becomes an economics and productive innovation for the community itself and for the village.

Abstract

Stunting is a serious nutritional problem in Indonesia that can hinder children's physical and cognitive development. Based on data on the prevalence of stunting in toddlers collected by WHO, Indonesia is among the third countries with the highest prevalence in the Southeast Asia region. One effective effort to prevent stunting is to provide exclusive breastfeeding to babies from birth by one of the goals of the SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) program, namely ending all forms of malnutrition with a strategic plan (rastra) to increase the percentage of babies under 6 months who receive exclusive breastfeeding. This community service activity aims to provide education about Exclusive Breastfeeding for pregnant women as an effort to reduce the incidence of stunting. This community service method uses Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) with educational counseling techniques assisted by flip sheet media. This community service activity targets pregnant women at the Polindes in Selebung Village, Aik Darek Health Center, Batukliang District, Central Lombok Regency. The results of this community service activity show an increase in pregnant women's understanding of Exclusive Breastfeeding. It is hoped that by increasing the knowledge and awareness of pregnant women, there will be a decrease in stunting rates in Selebung Village, as well as improving the quality of maternal and child health in the area.

Abstract

This community service initiative aimed to improve agricultural practices in rural smallholder farming through the adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) technology for smart farming. The challenge in Desa Sukamaju, a region reliant on traditional farming methods, was the inefficient use of water and suboptimal crop yields, which were exacerbated by unpredictable weather patterns. The goal of this intervention was to empower local farmers by providing them with real-time data on soil moisture, temperature, and humidity to optimize irrigation and improve crop productivity. The approach adopted was Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA), ensuring active farmer involvement in every phase of the program. The project utilized hands-on training to install and use IoT sensors, followed by continuous monitoring and support. Results showed a 23% reduction in water usage and an 18% increase in crop yields, particularly in vegetable crops. Additionally, qualitative feedback indicated a significant increase in farmer confidence, with 85% reporting greater technological competence. This indicates that IoT can significantly enhance resource management and crop productivity, even for farmers with limited digital experience. However, challenges such as the sustainability of technology maintenance and scalability were identified. The findings highlight the potential of IoT to modernize smallholder farming and underscore the need for continuous support and cost-effective solutions for long-term impact. The contribution of this work lies in demonstrating the practical, scalable application of IoT technology in rural farming settings, with recommendations for future projects to ensure sustainability and broader adoption.

Abstract

This community service initiative aimed to empower marginalized youth by enhancing their digital literacy and creative skills through workshops focused on digital content creation. The primary objective was to equip participants with the technical skills needed to produce digital media while fostering self-expression and social engagement. Using a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, the workshops involved hands-on training in video editing, podcasting, and social media management while encouraging collaboration and storytelling on local issues. The results indicated a significant improvement in technical skills and self-confidence among participants, with 85% reporting increased proficiency in content creation tools. Moreover, the workshops promoted a sense of community and empowerment, as youth collaborated on projects addressing social issues and showcased their work in a final exhibition. The findings highlighted the transformative power of creative digital education in marginalized communities, bridging the digital divide and offering youth a platform to assert their identities. Despite challenges such as unequal access to technology and varying initial skill levels, the initiative demonstrated the potential of digital content creation programs to foster empowerment, social cohesion, and critical engagement. The contributions of this initiative are significant in promoting inclusive digital literacy programs and offering a model for future community-driven digital education.

Abstract

This community service initiative aimed to strengthen rural economies by introducing and empowering local communities to adopt cooperative business models. Limited economic opportunities and fragmented individualistic approaches hinder sustainable development in many rural areas. This project sought to address these challenges by providing training on cooperative principles, governance, and practical business strategies. The method employed Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA), engaging local participants in identifying community resources, challenges, and potential cooperative opportunities. Over three months, participants attended interactive workshops, field visits, and group discussions, leading to an increased understanding of cooperatives. The results demonstrated significant improvement in participants' knowledge, with a marked shift in mindset from individualistic to collective economic action. Several groups also began drafting cooperative bylaws and sought legal recognition for their ventures. While the initiative was successful, it highlighted the need for continuous support and follow-up to ensure long-term sustainability. The project contributes to rural development by demonstrating the potential of cooperatives as a tool for inclusive economic growth, emphasizing the importance of local ownership and community-driven solutions. Future initiatives should incorporate ongoing mentorship and involve local leaders more deeply in the facilitation process to ensure lasting impact.

Abstract

The increasing volume of seasonal biomass waste such as siwalan (lontar palm) peels and coconut shells in Kapu Village, Merakurak Sub-district, Tuban Regency, has led to significant environmental and social challenges. This waste is often underutilized and typically burned in the open, causing air pollution and contributing to carbon emissions estimated at ±6–8 tons of CO₂ per year. Meanwhile, the majority of the village’s working-age population depends on seasonal agriculture, with limited alternative economic opportunities especially for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, housewives, persons with disabilities, and the unemployed. This community engagement program introduced briquette production from siwalan peels and coconut shells through a participatory approach, simple technology transfer, and entrepreneurship mentoring. The initiative resulted in increased community skills in briquette production and the emergence of local entrepreneurial efforts. Furthermore, it helped reduce open burning practices and created new income sources for vulnerable groups. The program demonstrates that biomass waste utilization can not only benefit the environment but also promote inclusive economic empowerment in rural communities.

Abstract

This study examines the organizational behavior of Kebarongan Village Government officials in providing public services. The village government is the bureaucratic unit closest to the community, so the behavior of its officials greatly determines the quality of service. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through interviews, observations, and document reviews. Analysis is carried out in stages through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The theoretical framework used is Max Weber's bureaucratic theory which emphasizes the characteristics of rational organizations, namely the existence of formal rules, hierarchy of authority, division of labor, impersonality, professionalism, and an orientation towards efficiency. The results show that the behavior of Kebarongan Village Government officials still reflects the character of classical bureaucracy, especially in the application of formal rules and hierarchical structures. However, the aspect of impersonality has not fully implemented because there are still service practices influenced by social proximity and kinship. Professionalism of officials is also beginning to be seen through training and capacity building, but is still limited by human resources. This study concludes that the organizational behavior of village officials is at the intersection of the Weberian bureaucratic model and local socio-cultural conditions. This shows that bureaucracy at the village level does not fully operate according to the rational-legal model, but experiences adjustments to the realities of society. These findings are expected to enrich public administration studies, particularly regarding the dynamics of public sector organizations at the village level.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the urgency and feasibility of upgrading the Banyumas Regency Environmental Service UPTD from class B to class A in order to improve community services, accountability, and environmental management effectiveness. This research employs content analysis to describe and illustrate data findings in a case study of the Regional Technical Service Unit (UPTD) of the Banyumas Regency Environmental Service. The post-bureaucracy theory is used as the main theoretical framework. Data collection focuses on examining the urgency and feasibility of upgrading the UPTD from class B to class A. The analysis shows that upgrading the UPTD class at the Banyumas Regency Environmental Service is urgently needed to improve community services, guidance, empowerment, and responsiveness to environmental complaints. The transformation of the UPKP into a Waste and Environmental Management Unit (UP2LH) is justified, as it has met the requirements for a class A UPTD under Article 24 paragraph (3) letter a of the Minister of Home Affairs Regulation Number 12 of 2017. These requirements include carrying out two or more functions, covering more than one sub-district, and having a workload exceeding 10,000 effective working hours per year. The upgrade aims to enhance accountability, performance, and effectiveness in environmental management, in line with the post-bureaucracy paradigm that prioritizes public interest, quality, and value.

Abstract

Menopause often triggers a variety of physiological and psychological discomforts such as hot flashes, anxiety, insomnia, and mood swings, significantly impacting women's quality of life. Many women seek natural alternatives to hormone replacement therapy, leading to increased interest in aromatherapy and essential oils as complementary treatments. This study aimed to analyze and synthesize scientific evidence regarding the effectiveness of aromatherapy and essential oils in alleviating menopausal symptoms. Using a literature review method, this study systematically reviewed studies published between 2000 and 2025 through databases including PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Google Scholar. The results revealed that essential oils, particularly lavender, clary sage, peppermint, and geranium, show significant potential in improving emotional stability, sleep quality, and vasomotor regulation. Thematic content analysis demonstrated that aromatherapy influences mood and hormonal balance through neurochemical and physiological mechanisms related to the limbic system and endocrine function. Despite variations in methodology, the findings consistently support aromatherapy as a safe, non-invasive, and effective complementary therapy for menopausal women. This study contributes to holistic healthcare by strengthening the integration of evidence-based aromatherapy into women's health strategies while emphasizing the need for further standardized, long-term clinical trials.
