Abstract

Islamic calligraphy occupies a central position in Islamic art as it represents not only visual beauty but also profound spiritual values. In modern contexts, art is often reduced to aesthetic appreciation, which can diminish its spiritual function within Islamic teachings. This study aims to examine Arabic calligraphy as an Islamic art form that serves as a medium for spiritual reflection, meditation, and remembrance of God. The focus of this research is to understand how calligraphy embodies Islamic values and contributes to inner calm and religious awareness in Muslim life. This study uses a qualitative approach through a literature review by analyzing scholarly journals, books, and academic writings related to Islamic art, calligraphy, and spirituality. The findings show that Islamic calligraphy holds a distinctive status because it is directly connected to the Qur’an as divine revelation. Beyond its aesthetic dimension, calligraphy functions as a visual form of dzikir that encourages contemplation, focus, and spiritual awareness. The process of writing calligraphy is also identified as a spiritual practice that requires patience, discipline, and sincerity, which support the development of inner tranquility and religious devotion. In conclusion, Islamic calligraphy should be understood not merely as an artistic expression, but as a spiritual activity that integrates aesthetic experience with religious consciousness, making it a meaningful medium for strengthening spiritual life in Islam.

Abstract

This study explores the fiqh-based interpretation of the well-known hadith concerning the division of the Muslim ummah into 73 sects, in which only one is deemed "saved." Rather than viewing this hadith as a justification for sectarianism and exclusion, this research approaches it through the lens of classical and contemporary Islamic jurisprudence to emphasize tolerance, unity, and the ethical management of religious differences. The analysis draws from diverse sources within Sunni scholarship to understand the historical and theological context of the hadith and its misinterpretation by radical or exclusivist groups. This paper argues that the "saved group" (al-firqat al-nājiyah) should not be monopolized by any particular sect or school of thought, but rather should be understood as those committed to the core Islamic principles of tawhid, justice, and mercy. Furthermore, the study highlights the relevance of fiqh in addressing challenges of pluralism, political fragmentation, and intra-Muslim intolerance in modern societies. By promoting values such as ukhuwah Islamiyyah (Islamic brotherhood), tasamuh (tolerance), and ijma’ (scholarly consensus), this research suggests that Islamic law offers strong foundations for fostering cohesion in the Muslim world. The findings urge contemporary Muslims to embrace differences as a source of strength, not division, and to actively contribute to unity without erasing diversity.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the religious identity of the minority Muslim community in Singapore, a secular, multi-religious state with a Muslim population of approximately 15% (most of whom are Malay). Once the center of Islam in Southeast Asia during the Malacca Sultanate, Singapore has developed into a developed nation following its independence from the Malaysian federation in 1965. Despite its perceived neutrality towards various religions, the government has implemented policies that limit the spread of Islam, such as a ban on loud calls to prayer, the use of headscarves in public schools and government institutions, and a restructuring of propaganda that impacts the homogenous Muslim community. The goal is to maintain social harmony across ethnicities (with a Chinese majority) and religions (Buddhists 33%, Christians 18%). To adapt, Muslims formed organizations such as the independent but government-recognized Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS), which manages fatwas, hajj, zakat, waqf (endowments), mosques (70 units), and madrasas. MUIS also ensures that religious sermons are conducted with tolerance and inclusivity, which includes monitoring foreign preachers. In addition to MUIS, PERGAS and PERDAUS exist, which focus on Islamic education. Overall, the minority Muslim community in Singapore demonstrates the resilience of its identity by adapting to secularism, while contributing to national diversity, despite limitations to prevent potential radicalization. This document emphasizes the importance of religion in both the private and public spheres, referencing international minority rights treaties such as the ICCPR.

Abstract

This study explores the tradition of collecting forty hadiths (Arba'in) within Sunni and Shia Zaydi traditions, conducting a comparative analysis of three seminal texts: Al-Arba'in al-Nawawiyah, Silsilat al-Ibriz, and Al-Arba'un al-Alawiyah. Utilizing a qualitative library research methodology with a comparative approach, this research examines the divergences in content, transmission methods (sanad), and socio-political roles of these collections. Data were gathered through text documentation and analyzed using content analysis alongside sanad criticism. The findings reveal that while sharing the structural format of Arba'in, these texts exhibit distinct theological priorities. Al-Arba'in al-Nawawiyah represents the Sunni tradition by emphasizing universally accepted hadiths on creed, worship, and ethics, validated through major companions. Conversely, Al-Arba'un al-Alawiyah reflects Zaydi Shia ideology, prioritizing the exclusive lineage of the Ahlul Bait, with a focus on Imamah, divine justice, and Sunni political critique. Meanwhile, Silsilat al-Ibriz offers an inclusive, spiritual approach emphasizing universal morals and explicitly avoiding sectarian narratives. The study concludes that differences in these collections stem primarily from disputes over religious authority and sanad validation rather than mere textual validity. Ultimately, despite their divergent theological and political orientations, all three collections function as dynamic tools for religious education and identity formation. Recognizing these shared educational functions, alongside the inclusive nature of Sufi-leaning texts like Silsilat al-Ibriz, offers a promising avenue for mediating sectarian tensions and fostering dialogue based on a shared Islamic heritage.

Abstract

This article discusses the concept of moral Sufism (tasawuf akhlaki) and tazkiyatun nafs as an ethical spiritual approach to addressing the moral crisis in modern society. The increasing phenomena of individualism, hedonism, and the weakening of moral values indicate that technological and intellectual progress is not always accompanied by the development of human character. Therefore, this research aims to analyze the conceptual framework of moral Sufism and the process of soul purification within the tradition of classical Islamic thought. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method using a library research approach by examining the works of classical Sufi scholars such as Hasan al-Basri, Al-Ghazali, Al-Qusyairi, and Al-Muhasibi. The findings show that moral Sufism emphasizes character formation through the stages of takhalli, tahalli, and tajalli, along with the cultivation of virtues such as repentance, patience, asceticism, tawakkal, mahabbah, and ridha. These concepts remain relevant as an ethical and spiritual framework for strengthening moral character and inner balance in contemporary life.

Abstract

Looking at the facts about the widespread shift in values that is occurring in the world of education, which has an impact on the character of students. The impact of a shift in values is a problem that must be addressed immediately. One suitable way to solve this problem is by applying the values of Sufism. Sufism, which is a path or method of self-purification, is starting to be forgotten and even abandoned by the majority of people, including students. Based on this problem, the author conducte a literature study to find out the application of Sufism in education through character formation. This research also aims to re-ground the science of Sufism in the student environment. From the results of the analysis, the researcher saw that Sufism values such as qana'ah, asceticism, patience and gratitude are values that need to be applied in education. These values will produce students with character and noble morals which is the ideal of education.
