This article discusses the history of Sufism calligraphy, an analysis of calligraphy as a medium of Sufism expression, and its implications for Islamic culture. Islamic calligraphy, with its beautiful Arabic writing, has become a powerful medium for expressing spiritual values in Sufism. Abstract

Sufi thought had a profound impact on the development of the aesthetics of Islamic calligraphy, making it more than just a visual art, but also a manifestation of Islamic spirituality. The teachings of Sufism, which emphasize divine love, tawhid (oneness of God), and the concept of fana (elimination of ego), are reflected in beautiful calligraphic works that are full of symbolic meaning. Each stroke of a letter in calligraphy is not only a decorative element, but also a means of contemplation and union with the Creator. Elements such as harmony of lines, compositional balance, and white space in calligraphy reflect the principles of Sufism, including simplicity and oneness with God. Furthermore, the symbolism of Arabic letters is often associated with Sufi teachings, giving this art a deep spiritual dimension. This article aims to explore how Sufi thought influences the visual elements and spiritual meanings in Islamic calligraphy, thereby strengthening the connection between art, spirituality and aesthetics in the Islamic tradition.

Abstract

In Arabic, the art of beautiful writing is called khat, which means lines, while in English, it is known as calligraphy, which comes from the Greek, namely “kalios” which means beautiful and “graph” which means writing. Thus, calligraphy is often referred to as the art of writing in a beautiful way, especially Arabic writing, which is produced by combining certain ideas and poured on the media in accordance with applicable rules. The art of Arabic calligraphy is the art of writing using Arabic letters and has existed since the time of the Prophet Muhammad. Apart from being an art, Arabic calligraphy is also considered as knowledge and skills in imagination, because its beauty contains meaning and certain rules in its writing. In this research, a qualitative method with literature study analysis was used. Data collection techniques were carried out through literature review relevant to the topic under study, while data analysis was carried out with a descriptive approach. The results show that calligraphy art began to develop during the time of the Prophet Muhammad, as evidenced by the existence of inscriptions containing Arabic calligraphy writing. The development of calligraphy styles also occurred over time, especially during the Umayyad and Abbasid eras. During the Abbasid era, the art of calligraphy developed rapidly, and the styles that emerged during that period are still used today, especially in Islamic countries in the West.

Abstract

This article aims to explores the symbolic meaning of dhammah as a grammatical marker of rafa’ in Arabic and its relevance to ideal leadership in Islam. Using a qualitative library research method, the study draws on nahwu texts, academic articles, and Islamic sources such as the Qur’an and Hadiths. The analysis highlights how dhammah, which elevates a word’s position in a sentence, represents that leadership should be granted based on merit and noble character, not force. Like dhammah maintains grammatical balance, a leader is expected to uphold social harmony through justice and responsibility. Misplacing dhammah can drastically change a sentence’s meaning, just as leadership mistakes can deeply impact society. Thus, dhammah is not only a grammatical tool but also a metaphor for ethical leadership—emphasizing worthiness, moral integrity, and balanced governance. This study reveals the philosophical depth of Arabic grammar in illustrating Islamic leadership principles through linguistic symbolism.

Abstract

This study examines the use of the rofa’ marker wawu in Arabic from linguistic, philosophical, and moral perspectives that are relevant to the formation of a Muslim’s character. Using a qualitative approach through library research, the study analyzes both classical and contemporary literature on the use of wawu as a nominative marker in jama’ mudzakkar salim and asma’ul khamsah. The findings reveal that wawu as a grammatical indicator not only reflects structural syntax but also conveys symbolic values representing social order, semantic stability, and respect for noble social relationships. As a rofa’ marker, wawu functions as a symbol of honor within the linguistic and spiritual context of Islam. This research positions nahwu (Arabic grammar) not merely as a technical linguistic tool, but as a means of character education and spiritual development. Thus, Arabic grammar instruction can serve to instill moral values such as responsibility, discipline, and reverence for social roles. This interdisciplinary approach broadens the understanding of Arabic as an ethical medium that shapes a morally upright and spiritually aware Muslim identity.

Abstract

Sufism has played a crucial role in the development of Islam in the Indonesian archipelago, influencing spiritual practices, education, and socio-cultural life. After the era of the Wali Songo, Sufi teachings did not decline but instead expanded through networks of tarekat scholars spread across various regions, particularly in Sumatra, Java, and Sulawesi. This study aims to examine the historical development of Sufism in the post-Wali Songo period and to identify key figures who contributed to the dissemination and strengthening of Sufi teachings in the archipelago. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach through literature review, this article discusses the roles of figures such as Syekh Abdurrauf Singkel (Syattariyah), Syekh Burhanuddin Ulakan (Minangkabau), Syekh Yusuf al-Makassari (Sulawesi), and KH Ahmad Rifa’i (Java). These scholars not only propagated their respective tarekat orders but also contributed to Islamic education and resistance against colonialism. The study finds that post-Wali Songo Sufism transformed into a deeply rooted cultural and social force that shaped the spiritual character of Muslim communities in Indonesia up to the present day.

Abstract

This study explores the historical and sociological trajectory of the Syadziliyah Sufi order in the Indonesian archipelago. Although less prominent than other major Sufi orders such as Qadiriyah or Naqshabandiyah, the Syadziliyah order has played a vital role in shaping the spiritual and social dimensions of Muslim communities in the region. The study applies a qualitative-descriptive method based on literature analysis to examine how the order entered the Nusantara through trade, pilgrimage, and scholarly exchange, as well as how its teachings have been adapted to diverse local cultures. Emphasizing spiritual balance, social engagement, and moderation, the syadziliyah order continues to be relevant in the modern era as a response to spiritual crises and socio-moral challenges. The findings show that its values contribute significantly to ethical development, community solidarity, and the revitalization of Islamic spirituality within the pluralistic society of Indonesia.
