Abstract

Free radicals are normal metabolites in the form of molecules of one or more unpaired electrons, so they are highly reactive and can cause cell damage and disrupt homeostasis. Depletion of antioxidants or accumulation of free radicals can cause oxidative stress, which plays a role in various disease processes such as inflammation, cancer, hemochromatosis, emphysema, high blood pressure to the aging process. Spirulina platensis is also known as blue-green filamentous algae because it is a colony-forming blue-green autotroph where columnar cells are arranged in columns to form twisted filaments resembling helices. C-Phycocyanin is one of the major groups of water-soluble and widely distributed phycobiliprotein in spirulina. The purpose of writing this literature review is to determine the potential antioxidant activity of Spirulina platensis against metabolic diseases and degenerative processes. This writing is in the form of a literature study by searching for data using two databases, Pudmed and Google Scholar. The keywords used are, Spirulina platensis, antioxidant activity, metabolic and degenerative diseases. After being selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, 21 references were obtained for review. Spirulina platensis has shown antioxidant, antidiabetic and antihypertensive effects in vitro and in vivo.

Abstract

During childhood, rapid growth occurs so that adequate intake is needed to grow optimally, but low appetite is one of the problems often faced. Based on data from WHO (2017), Indonesia is the third country with the highest prevalence of stunted toddlers in Southeast Asia with an average of 36.4% in 2005-2017. One of the causes of lack of appetite and nutrition is zinc deficiency. Therefore, this study review aims to analyze the effect of zinc administration on nutritional status in children. Literature searches were conducted on several databases, namely Pubmed, Google Scholar, and the National Library of Indonesia website. The keywords used were "zinc", "appetite", "children" and 10 journals from 2011 to 2020 were obtained for review. The inclusion criteria were journals from the last 10 years, zinc affecting appetite, and children aged 6 months - 12 years. Administration of 10 mg zinc per day for at least 12 - 24 weeks and a child's serum zinc level of <75 μg/dL had a significant appetite enhancing effect. Zinc supplementation can increase the total intake of calories, carbohydrates, protein, and fat leading to an increase in weight, height, body mass index, and nutritional status of children.

Abstract

Background: DKI Jakarta has the highest CAD disease rate at 1.9% based on the 2018 Riskesdas. Deaths from CAD are predicted to increase to 23.3 by 2030. Atherosclerosis is an inflammation that occurs due to the deposition of fat called atheroma. Currently, many studies are conducted to reduce cholesterol levels in the blood using natural ingredients such as garlic which is considered to have many advantages. The purpose of this study is to determine the important compounds in garlic that can reduce cholesterol levels, and become anti-atherosclerosis in blood vessels. Methods: Literature review based on articles and journals adjusted by PICO (Population, Intervention, Control, Outcome) and PRISMA Flow Diagram Generator method. Journals were searched in medical databases through Google Scholar, PubMed, and ProQuestd. Results: Based on the literature, garlic compounds that can reduce LDL levels and increase HDL have been studied, namely non-volatile γ-glutamyl-Salk(en)yl-L-cysteine or alliin . Conclusion: The presence of active compounds contained in garlic can significantly reduce the risk of atherosclerosis in coronary heart disease because it can reduce cholesterol levels in the blood and plaque in atherosclerosis.

Abstract

The learning style used by individuals is a significant factor in the learning process which will have an impact on the achievement of learning outcomes. In a quantitative data-based approach, information about learning styles and academic achievement was collected from a sample group of 2019 class students. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the learning styles adopted by UKRIDA Medical students’ class 2019, and their academic achievement achievements (GPA). Of the 62 students, it was found that the majority of students from the Ukrida Medical Faculty Class of 2019 have a kinesthetics’ learning style. The results of this study are expected to provide insight into the importance of understanding learning styles in improving the academic achievement of UKRIDA Faculty of Medicine students as well as providing input for the development of learning methods that are more in line with their learning characteristics.

Abstract

Sunlight is useful in the formation of provitamin D, which is useful for increasing the body's immunity. But besides these benefits, there are also negative effects of excess sun exposure, one of which can cause skin cancer. This incident can be prevented by using sunscreen regularly and correctly. However, it was found that only a third of adults use sunscreen every day. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the relationship between knowledge and attitudes toward the behavior of Ukrida Faculty of Medicine students when using sunscreen to prevent skin cancer. The method used in this research uses descriptive-analytic research with a cross-sectional approach. The population used in this study were Ukrida Faculty of Medicine students in 2019, totaling 155 people. With a total sample of 123 respondents who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data collection was done using a questionnaire. The results of this study indicate that there is a relationship between knowledge of behavior with a value of p = 0.027 (< 0.05) and a relationship between attitudes towards behavior with a value of p = 0.000 (< 0.05). Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that there was a significant relationship between knowledge and attitudes toward the behavior of 2019 Ukrida Faculty of Medicine students in using sunscreen to prevent skin cancer. However, most of the respondents did not reapply sunscreen every 2 hours.

Abstract

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is an inflammatory skin disorder characterized by intense itching and eczematous lesions. The onset of AD usually occurs in childhood and AD symptoms can last into adulthood. An increasing prevalence of AD has been observed worldwide. The causes of AD are multifactorial and there are still not many systematic reviews of AD-related risk factors. This study uses a literature review method. Literature search was conducted using Google Scholar and PubMed. using keywords: atopic dermatitis, risk factors, adults, and observational studies. All literature was selected using inclusion and exclusion criteria to assess the suitability of the content and quality of the study. Patients with atopic dermatosis had a filaggrin mutation cause loss/change in the function of filaggrin (Filament Aggregating Protein). Risk factors for atopic dermatitis in adults include a history of atopy, food allergies, a history of atopy in the father or mother or both, history of AD in parents, having pets at home, younger age or early onset, being a former smoker, gender women and active smoking, as well as passive smokers, low education level (<=12 years), socioeconomic status, and living in small places. Symptoms and clinical manifestations include pruritus, morphology and wide distribution of lesions, chronic and recurrent dermatitis, history of atopy and family history of atopy. Management of atopic dermatitis begins with education and skin care by taking regular baths and using emollients/moisturizers. Atopy and family history of atopy, smoking, low education, and socioeconomic are risk factors for AD in adults.
