Abstract

Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are the main vector of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF). Various prevention efforts were carried out to reduce their population. One of them is the use of synthetic or bioinsecticides. Bioinsecticides are safer for humans, animals and the environment so they had been used widely as an alternative nowadays. Larvicide is one of the insecticides product that attacks mosquito breeding sites in the water. Larvicide has various mechanisms that can attack some target organs including larvae’s midgut. Based on several trial results, plant insecticides have been cause epithelial cells in larvae’s midgut to lyses, change shape, vacuolize and detach from the basal membrane. Peritrophic membrane, microvilli and brush border are partially or completely damage. Histopathological changes in the midgut epithelial cells of Ae. aegypti larvae were caused by metabolite compounds, either singly or in combination that contained in plant extracts

Abstract

Natural antioxidants are still favoured due to their high benefits and safety compared to synthetic ones. Wedang uwuh is one example of a traditional drink consisting of various spices (cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, sappanwood, nutmeg, and ginger) rich in antioxidants. This study aimed to determine the optimum infusion method of ready to drink wedang uwuh to achieve its maximum antioxidant potential. Two groups of wedang uwuh samples (grounded and ungrounded) were infused in hot water (90ºC) using tea bags in different timings (1, 3, 5, 10, and 15 minutes). Then their antioxidant activity was measured using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) scavenging assay method. The results showed the highest when we infused grounded wedang uwuh for 15 minutes with the IC50 value of 7.97 µg/mL. The smaller the particle size and the longer the infusion time yields lower IC50 value, thus achieving more potent antioxidant activity.

Abstract

Consuming street food is a habit common among elementary school students. Snacking habits can be influenced by parents and friends, and various other factors. The hygiene of the snacks in school environment is also a consideration. This study aims to determine the effect of snacking habits and snacks hygiene on incidence of diarrhea among elementary school students. The study was conducted by comparing available data from six journals. The results showed conflicting data on the effect of snacking habits on incidence of diarrhea with two sources showing significant (p < 0.05) and insignificant (p > 0.05) impact. Hand washing habits (p < 0.05), carrying meals (p < 0.05), and knowledge (p < 0.05) had a significant influence on snacking habits and incidence of diarrhea. For snack hygiene, food quality (p < 0.05); storage (p < 0.05); and processing (p < 0.05); sanitation facilities (p < 0.05); and food handlers’ hygiene (p < 0.05) had a significant effect on E.coli contamination. Apart from hygiene, some snacks were found to contain harmful food additives. In conclusion, it is necessary to conduct an educational program for healthy snacks as well as monitor and maintain canteen hygiene on a regular basis.

Abstract

Antibiotic therapy is a major concern in the health sector. There is an increase in the resistance of gram-negative bacteria that produce carbapenemase enzymes to certain antibiotics, especially the β-lactam group, thus creating a new challenge for the health world to find stronger antibiotics to fight the resistance of these gram-negative bacteria. Currently, there are several new antibiotics that have been approved as treatment options, such as Ceftazidime-Avibactam. It is hoped that this new treatment can be an option, especially for gram-negative bacteria that produce carbapenemase enzymes.

Abstract

COVID-19 is able cause Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) which is animportant factor in the the disease’s severity. This review aims to determine the effect of COVID-19 virus infection on the onset of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) and its management therapy. The research used is a literature review, the articles used are obtained through PubMed and Google Scholar and then filtered according to the criteria needed. COVID-19 infection is associated with an inflammatory cytokine storm that can result in acute lung injury. Cytokine storm is an abnormal response of systemic inflammation which occurs due to excessive production of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines. Respiratory failure such as acute hypoxemia can occur due to manifestations of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) and Acute Lung Injury (ALI), not due to increased pulmonary capillary pressure. Management and therapy in lung injury patients such as supportive therapy, administration of antibiotics, and the use of mechanical ventilators are needed to treat the disease.

Abstract

Based on data from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, in 2013 the coverage of exclusive breastfeeding was 54.3%, but there are still many provinces that have not reached the coverage rate of exclusive breastfeeding. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the achievement rate is still 50%. The impact that occurs from not giving exclusive breastfeeding is the delay in growth and development of infants. The baby's growth rate is strongly influenced by the quality of breastfeeding, so it is necessary to know the factors that influence the availability of breast milk from a mother. This study aims to determine the effect of exclusive breastfeeding and other factors that can affect the growth and development of infants aged 6 months. This research was conducted on six-month-old babies, at the Grogol Petamburan Community Health Center, in the period October 2016 – September 2020 using a questionnaire. The data were then collected and processed using the SPSS application. The results showed that the coverage of exclusive breastfeeding at the Puskesmas Grogol Petamburan had reached the coverage recommended by WHO. This study concluded that there was a relationship between exclusive breastfeeding and the baby's length, weight and development.

Abstract

A smartphone is generally defined as a multifunctional cell phone that adds some functions of a personal digital assistant (PDA) to a cell phone or a camera phone. The American Optometric Association defines computer vision syndrome (CVS) as an eye problem with vision that starts with prolonged use of computers, electronic readers and mobile phones. The most common symptoms associated with CVS are eye strain, headaches, blurred vision, dry eyes, and pain. This study aims to analyze the relationship of smartphone use with the occurrence of computer vision syndrome in the students of the Faculty of Medicine at the Krida Wacana Christian University Class of 2016. This study was a cross sectional design with 75 respondents. The technique of collecting data and identifying CVS occurrences uses a questionnaire. Power obtained was analyzed using the chi square test. The results of this study indicate that the prevalence of CVS is 98.7% and there is no correlation between the duration of smartphone use and the CVS incidence (p 0.0404> 0.05). This shows that the relationship between the duration of smartphone use has no effect on the incidence of CVS in Krida Wacana Christian University Class of 2016 Medical Faculty students.
