Abstract

Mission is basically a business of transformation. Christian community, as a community of the disciples, participates in mission, namely transformation of the world as God wants it to be. Society of the Divine Word (SVD), as one of the Missionary Societies within the Catholic Church, was founded to participate in this 'missio Dei' (God's mission). In principle members of the Society have committed themselves to be participants in this divine business, work of salvation. This article tries to highlight some issues of transformation which have been formulated by the XVI General Chapter of the Society held in Rome, June 4- July 8, 2006. The writer tries to look at them from an Indonesian perspective and looks for ways of their implementation. He considers that it could significantly be done in the SVD's communities which are, says the General Chapter, best regarded as 'schools of dialogue'. Precisely in these communities issues of transformation in line with the gospel values should be elaborated in ga such a way that the members are being revitalized time and again. In so doing, missionaries can grow more and more in the spirit of prophetic dialogue and become as St. Paul says - "everything for everyone" (cf. 1Cor 9:19).

Abstract

The social development has improved many aspect of human life, such as economic benefit, higher life style, easier mobilisation, which enables people to move from one place to another. To some extent, this migration has brought many benefits for people, however, it also creates many problems to sort out. The author notices the situation happening in the city of Malang, where many students from other places around Indonesia come to pursue higher studies. Apart from positive ideas those students bear in mind, the author highlights the fact that there is significant tension between students from different back- ground, such as races, religious beliefs, cultures, traditions, etc. Considering that this issue could raise bigger tension which could lead to broader conflict, the author proposes some theological and pastoral aproach to help these people molto come to terms with the real situation. The approach proposed is based on Biblical reference, with three key figures: Isaiah, Amos and Jesus. And finally the author suggests some concrete pastoral steps in order to promote the harmony and to bridge the gap because of the pluralism.

Abstract

Jesus response to the Canaanite woman "It is not fair to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs" (Matt 15:26) has caused not a few problems of interpretation. How could Jesus call the Canaanite woman a dog, which is a derogatory description of the Gentiles? Who will not be shocked by Jesus' saying? Jesus seems to be out of character. However, did Jesus really intend to despise the woman and the foreigner? It seems that Jesus' saying should be understood as a usage of rhetoric language. That is to say, Jesus was not expressing His understanding but He was quoting Israel's conception of woman and Gentiles in order to refuse and to correct it. In other words, He said this derogatory ironically to remind the Israelites how bad and incorrect their conception of God's salvation was. On the other hand, as a Jew, Jesus was probably influenced by Jewish conception of woman and Gentiles. Matt 15:24, for instance, expresses how Jesus sees His mission as exclusively devoted to Israel. The fact that by the end of the story Jesus conceives the salvation as open to Gentiles shows that Jesus was transformed as well. Jesus' encounter and dialog with the Canaanite Woman transformed not only the Canaanite woman but also Jesus' perception of the Canaanite woman and Jesus' understanding of His own mission. At the beginning, He perceived the woman as a worthless person. By the end, He recognized her as someone with great faith and worthy for salvation. Thus, an encounter and a dialog with a person from different culture bring transformation of the both partners of dialog.

Abstract

The lack of democratic experience in Islamic governance system generates the debate among Muslims thinkers on the compatibility of democracy with Islam. Nonetheless, Madinah governance which is led and built by the Prophet Muhammad based on egality, equality and participation, reflects the substance of democracy itself. Abstract

The focus of this study is "Marriage, Divorce, and Remarriage from the Point of View of the Canonical Law of the Catholic Church and Its Contribution to Pastoral Work in the Parish of St. Mark Melak Archdiocese of Samarinda”. Because marriage is a very important matter, the Church, state, and traditional institutions regulate it respectively. The Catholic Church regulates it in the Code of Canon Law, specifically Canons 1055-1165. Catholic marriage is always reviewed from natural, ecclesiastical, and civil law. Natural Law applies to everyone without exception, including those from other religions or other cultures. This study aims to explain the basic reasons why the Catholic Church does not confirm marriages from other churches which are still bound by previous marriages with Catholics who do not experience legal obstacles. The method used is phenomenology and literature. This study found that natural law is the basic reason for those who are still previously married not getting married. Second, the marriage of the baptized is considered as a sacrament by canon law.

The focus of this paper is the analysis of the context of the book of Nahum 1:1-8, with the aim of exploring the understanding of the historical, social, and theological background that influenced the writing and message of this book. Which text Nahum 1:1-8 is one of the texts in the Old Testament that prophesies about Nineveh. The analytical method used is a literature study by exploring the Cultural and Social Context of the text, so that readers can understand how Assyrian culture and society play a role in the narrative and how that culture influences their depiction in the book, so that it will appear on the surface that the social impact that occurred in the city of Nineveh was that the city was identified as going to fall. Finally, this analysis finds how this book reflects the views of Israelite society about power and destruction. The relevance of this writing provides insight into the historical and social context of that time, especially regarding the cruelty of the Assyrian empire and the feelings of the oppressed people. This is intended to invite the wise reader to find God in every event in life, especially in times of trouble. Because God pays attention to those who sincerely seek and believe in Him. Readers can learn from the Israelites, how they realized that God is the basis of hope, the guarantor in various difficulties, especially when experiencing injustice.
