Abstract

This study examines the tradition of Baremah Adat Binua Dait of the Dayak tribe in Bareh Hamlet, West Kalimantan, as well as its integration with Catholic teachings in the context of Gaudium et Spes Art. 40. The background of this research began with the interaction between local culture and Catholicism among the Dayak people, who have long followed the Baremah tradition as part of their cultural identity. The issue raised is how elements of Baremah culture are adapted within the framework of the Catholic faith, especially in the perspective of the inculturation stated in the Gaudium et Spes document. The purpose of this research is to understand the process of syncretism that occurs between the Dayak tradition and Catholicism. The method used is a qualitative approach with interviews, observations, and documentation analysis. The results of the study show that various aspects of the Baremah tradition have been adapted to Catholic teachings, such as the use of the term "Jubata" which is recognized as God in the Catholic context. This process reflects the dynamics of syncretism that includes dialogue and adaptation between local culture and religious teachings. This research provides insight into how cultural identity can be maintained in the context of new religions, as well as the impact of syncretism on the religious experience of the Dayak community.

Abstract

Time changes, and so do humans. This statement remains relevant today, as people become increasingly aware of the close relationship between time and creativity. Within the framework of social life, this proverb emphasizes that throughout life, the ways individuals express themselves also evolve, which in turn influences their efforts to seek meaning related to themselves, others, nature, and God. This reality illustrates that humans are cultural beings capable of creating culture. In this context, the theme of this paper is "The Meaning of the Hau Monef Symbol for the Timorese Dawan Community." The author has chosen this theme because it seems that the Dawan community, particularly the younger generation, lacks the habit of exploring the meanings behind each symbol in their culture. Thus, this paper aims to assist the Dawan community in understanding the significance of their cultural symbols, especially Hau Monef. The method employed by the author includes a literature review and personal insights, drawing on various sources related to culture to enhance this writing.

Abstract

This paper is about Pope John Paul II's views on the theology of the body and sexuality. Pope John Paul II intended to show that the human body is God's way of revealing Himself. The transcendent God, who is invisible, who cannot be seen with the human sense of sight, can be known by human beings, His creation, through the human body. The body is more than just the physically visible body, what is outwardly visible, what is capable of being sensually perceived, the body is also capable of showing a reality that goes beyond the outward dimension alone. The body is able to make visible what is invisible; the spiritual and the divine. The Theology of the Body according to John Paul II aims to transfer into the reality of the world, a fundamental interpretation of the fundamental meaning of the human body. The issue of human trafficking that occurs today does not show respect for the human body as God's creation. Human trafficking is an affront to the dignity of the human body from the perspective of John Paul II's theology of the body.

Abstract

This study will aim to look at the role played by the activities of the Legion of Mary towards the development of student ministry in the Pastoral Ministry Study Programme of STP-IPI. God created humans to depend on each other, and service is a tangible manifestation of mutual need. The spirit of proclamation, instilled by the good news and the sacrifice of Jesus, is the inspiration of the Church and everybody who is part and parcel of it; this encompasses students in the STP-IPI Pastoral Ministry Study Programme. Some factors, both intrinsic like personal interests and extrinsic like dependence on technology and pressure from academics, deny many of the students the opportunity to be actively involved in this service. Legion of Mary activities become a way of awakening and invigorating that spirit of service to Jesus in students. This research uses a quantitative method with an approach called quantitative description. The result shows that these activities hold an important role in forming students' services and are important in shaping characters and awareness of the importance of quality service.

Abstract

This study focuses on understanding Animal Symbolicum in the Jalatn Lome Jaih tradition of the Dayak Krio community in Ketapang, West Kalimantan, and its role in supporting the Catholic Church’s mission to harmonize religious teachings with local culture. In Indonesia, the relationship between religion and local culture often faces challenges, particularly in communities with strong customary traditions such as the Dayak Krio. Jalatn Lome Jaih is a tradition related to the life cycle—from birth, marriage, to death—rich in cultural and spiritual symbolism. The Catholic Church, in its mission in Tanah Krio, requires an adaptive approach to ensure its teachings are more accepted by the local community without disregarding their cultural identity. This study employs a literature review and an analytical approach, utilizing Ernst Cassirer’s concept of Animal Symbolicum to explore customary symbolism as a medium of communication in the dialogue between religion and culture. The findings reveal that several symbols in Jalatn Lome Jaih, such as the use of water in nurutn manik, which resembles the sacramental meaning in baptism, or the concept of ancestral reverence in batipak baluhak, which aligns with prayers for the souls in the Catholic Church, can serve as common ground to enrich the spirituality of the Dayak Krio community. Thus, customary symbolism can function as a communication medium that enables a more contextual and inclusive pastoral approach in Tanah Krio.
