Abstract

Background: Chili pepper (Capsicum frutescens L.) productivity often declines in the rainy season due to weed growth and suboptimal planting distance. Objective: This study determined the effect of planting distance and weed control timing, and their interaction, on chili pepper growth in the rainy season. Methods: A Factorial Randomized Block Design was used with two factors: planting distance (25 x 50 cm; 50 x 50 cm) and weed control timing (uncontrolled; critical phase; vegetative-critical-generative phase; 20-day intervals), giving 8 combinations replicated four times. Data were analyzed by ANOVA (5%), followed by the BNT test. Results: The interaction was significant only for plant height, with K2M2 (50 x 50 cm, vegetative-critical-generative weed control) producing the tallest plants (138.25 cm). For other parameters, only main effects were significant: wider spacing and vegetative-critical-generative weed control each independently increased leaf, branch, and flower number, while fruit number and weight were unaffected. Conclusion: Planting spacing of 50 × 50 cm combined with vegetative-critical-generative weed control provided the best growth response of bird's eye chili

Abstract

Background: Entomopathogenic fungi (EPFs) such as Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium spp. are widely used as biological control agents in integrated pest management (IPM), but their ecological risks to non-target predatory arthropods remain insufficiently understood; specifically, no quantitative synthesis has yet compared these effects across multiple exposure pathways and predator taxa simultaneously. Objective: This meta-analysis aimed to quantify and compare the lethal and sublethal effects of these two EPF species on predatory arthropods and to determine how exposure pathway and predator taxonomic group modulate the magnitude of ecological risk. Methods: Data were extracted from 27 laboratory studies published between 2015 and 2025, yielding 147 observations across more than 25 predator species representing six taxonomic orders (five with sufficient replication for pooled comparison). Effect sizes, expressed as log odds ratios and Hedges' g, were pooled using random-effects models, and mixed-effects moderator analyses compared EPF species, exposure pathway, and predator taxonomic order. Results: Both B. bassiana and Metarhizium spp. significantly increased predator mortality (pooled OR = 13.33) and reduced survival (OR = 7.665), with no significant difference in lethality between species. Developmental time was significantly prolonged and fecundity was significantly reduced, while longevity showed no significant overall effect, albeit based on limited data (k = 6). Exposure pathway was the strongest significant moderator of fecundity risk: direct application caused significantly greater fecundity reduction than soil or prey-mediated exposure, and Coleoptera showed the greatest susceptibility to developmental disruption among taxonomic orders based on the available data, with Coleoptera also being by far the most represented order (n = 67 observations). Conclusions: Exposure pathway, rather than EPF species identity, was the primary determinant of laboratory-observed lethal and sublethal effects on predatory arthropods, indicating that application method warrants priority attention in ecological risk assessment and in the design of EPF-based biological control strategies that seek to conserve predatory arthropods as key natural enemies, although field validation of these laboratory-based, worst-case-scenario estimates is still needed.

Abstract

Background: Red chili pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) is a leading horticultural commodity in Indonesia, but its productivity is often limited by insect-transmitted viral diseases. Objective: This study aimed to determine the incidence of viral disease, the population dynamics, and the species of insect vectors on red chili pepper in Sukarami, Gunung Talang District, Solok Regency. Methods: Direct field observation was conducted on a 0.0273 ha plot (800 plants) in Jorong Sukarami, Nagari Koto Gaek Guguk, from November 2024 to April 2025. One hundred sample plants across five diagonally-arranged subplots were observed. Disease incidence (IP = n/N × 100%) was recorded weekly from 21 to 98 days after planting (DAP), while vector populations were counted visually at four critical phases: vegetative, flowering, fruiting, and post-harvest. Results: The incidence of virus-like symptoms increased progressively from 6% at 3 weeks after planting (WAP) to 73% at 14 WAP, with the sharpest increase (16 percentage points) occurring between the 8th and 9th week during flowering. Bemisia tabaci was the dominant vector, rising from 8 individuals at the vegetative phase to 57 after harvest, while Myzus persicae appeared only after the first harvest (16 individuals). Conclusion: Disease incidence increased concurrently with B. tabaci population, suggesting a temporal association between disease development and vector abundance. Early monitoring and management of B. tabaci during the vegetative phase is therefore recommended to reduce virus transmission risk

Abstract

Background: Cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) is an economically important plantation crop in Indonesia, but its growth is constrained by seedling quality and the acidic, nutrient-poor conditions of Red-Yellow Podzolic (RYP) soil. Therefore, appropriate fertilization is essential to support seedling growth. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the interaction between GDM liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) and NPK 16-16-16 fertilizer, as well as their individual effects, on the vegetative growth of cacao seedlings. Methods: The experiment was arranged in a 4 x 4 factorial Completely Randomized Design with three replications using four GDM LOF concentrations and four NPK 16-16-16 application rates. Plant height, leaf number, stem diameter, root length, root volume, fresh weight, and dry weight were measured and analyzed using analysis of variance followed by Tukey’s Honestly Significant Difference test at the 5% level. Results: The results showed that the interaction between GDM LOF and NPK 16-16-16 significantly affected all growth parameters except root length, which was influenced only by the individual effects of each treatment. The combination of 25 mL L-1 GDM LOF and 12 g polybag-1 NPK 16-16-16 consistently resulted in the best overall growth performance of cacao seedlings. Conclusions: Overall, combined organic and inorganic fertilization improved cacao seedling growth on RYP soil, indicating that GDM LOF and NPK 16-16-16 can serve as an effective and cost-efficient fertilization strategy.

Abstract

Background: Optimizing the inorganic–organic fertilizer balance is key to sustainable maize seed production that maintains yield and quality. Objective: This study evaluated the effects of different proportions of inorganic fertilizer and cattle manure on vegetative growth, yield components, grain yield, and physiological seed quality of hybrid maize. Methods: A nonfactorial RCBD with six treatments (B0 = 100% inorganic, B1 = 80% inorganic + 20% manure, B2 = 60% + 40%, B3 = 40% + 60%, B4 = 20% + 80%, B5 = 100% manure) was used, replicated four times. Data on plant height, leaf traits, ear components, grain yield, and seed quality (germination, vigor, 1000seed weight) were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey’s HSD at 5% Result: Fertilizer proportions significantly affected plant height, leaf number, ear number, and ear length, but not leaf dimensions, ear diameter, kernel rows, or seed quality. B2 produced the tallest plants (77.3 cm) and most leaves (8.60), while B3 produced the most ears (1.35). Germination (96.0–98.1%) and vigor (95.7–99.6%) exceeded certified standards. Conclution: Balanced combinations (40–60% inorganic + 40–60% manure) enhance vegetative growth and yield without compromising seed quality. Partial or complete replacement of inorganic fertilizer with cattle manure is feasible for sustainable maize seed production, maintaining certified seed standards while reducing synthetic input reliance

Abstract

Background: The fire caterpillar Setothosea asigna is a major defoliating pest of oil palm, and its control still relies heavily on chemical insecticides. Objective: This study aimed to determine the mortality symptoms of S. asigna caused by attacks from the predator Sycanus sp. and to evaluate the effectiveness of its instar stages 3, 4, and 5 as biological control agents. Methods: A non-factorial Randomized Block Design (RBD) was used with four treatments (F0 = control; F1 = instar 3; F2 = instar 4; F3 = instar 5, each of three predators paired with ten S. asigna instar 3 larvae) and six replications, conducted on oil palm seedlings under mesh cages at Institut Teknologi Sawit Indonesia, Medan, from February to June 2026. Mortality was observed every 12 hours for four days and analyzed by ANOVA followed by Duncan's Multiple Range Test at 5%. Results: Predator attacks caused larval skin shrinkage within 30–90 minutes after stylet piercing, followed by colour change from fresh green to yellowish-brown, then dark brown/blackish after more than 24 hours. By the eighth observation, mortality reached 95.00% (F1), 98.33% (F2), and 98.33% (F3), all significantly higher than the control (0.00%), with F2 and F3 not significantly different. Conclusions: Sycanus sp. instars 3, 4, and 5 are all effective biological control agents against S. asigna, supporting their use in environmentally friendly integrated pest management in oil palm

Abstract

Background: Top grafting is an effective method for producing uniform and vigorous mango (Mangifera indica L.) seedlings, but successful graft establishment and subsequent growth depend on adequate nutrient and hormonal support. NPK 16-16-16 provides essential macronutrients for vegetative growth, while Atonik plant growth regulator (PGR) may stimulate physiological processes involved in graft establishment and shoot development. Objective: This study evaluated the interaction and individual effects of NPK 16-16-16 fertilizer and Atonik plant growth regulator (PGR) on the growth of top-grafted mango seedlings.  Methods: The experiment used a 4 x 4 factorial Completely Randomized Design with three replications, comprising NPK 16-16-16 at 0, 2.5, 5, and 7.5 g polybag⁻¹ and Atonik PGR at 0, 50, 100, and 150 ppm. Grafting success rate, days to bud break, scion height, scion diameter, leaf number, shoot number, and shoot height were analyzed using ANOVA followed by Tukey's HSD test at the 5% significance level. Results: NPK 16-16-16 x Atonik interaction significantly affected days to bud break, scion height, scion diameter, leaf number, and shoot height, but not grafting success rate or shoot number. The N3A3 combination (7.5 g polybag⁻¹ NPK 16-16-16 + 150 ppm Atonik) produced the fastest bud break (28.00 days) and the greatest scion height (33.17 cm), scion diameter (6.27 mm), leaf number (16.67), and shoot height (27.17 cm). Conclusions: The combination of 7.5 g polybag-1 NPK 16-16-16 and 150 ppm Atonik is recommended to enhance the growth of top-grafted mango seedlings.

Abstract

Background: Drought and plant pests may reduce rice agroecosystem resilience, yet field-surveillance information is often reported separately. Objective: This study measured drought-affected rice area, identified plant pests in permanent observation plots, and interpreted initial location-level vulnerability in Hinai District, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Methods: An observational-descriptive approach used POPT-PHP surveillance records for 16–28 February 2026. Five villages were analyzed for drought indicators and three permanent plots for plant-pest indicators, including planted area, affected area, attack intensity, pest density, and natural-enemy density. Results: The villages covered 638 ha, of which 85 ha were affected, equivalent to 13.32%. The highest affected proportions occurred in Suka Jadi (23.08%), Muka Paya (21.13%), and Kebun Lada (16.67%), while the lowest occurred in Baru Pasar 8 (5.26%). Stem borer was recorded in Paya Rengas and Baru Pasar 8 with attack intensities of 2.6% and 3.7%, respectively; blast disease occurred in Suka Jadi at 2.9%. Pest density ranged from 0.26 to 0.33 individuals per 10 hills and natural-enemy density from 0.30 to 0.40 individuals per 10 hills. Conclusions: Results indicate spatial heterogeneity, and drought and pest pressures did not necessarily increase together; the findings support surveillance prioritization and adaptive rice management, but do not establish causality.
