Abstract

Although all tourism attractions would have a positive impact on the local population inMyanmar, COVID-19 has had a significant negative impact on the tourism industryglobally, and Myanmar is no exception. All commercial flights to Myanmar have beensuspended since April 2020, and domestic flights have also been suspended since earlySeptember. Due to the travel restrictions, this pattern abruptly stopped. Therefore, thisstudy is to evaluate the economic, social and environmental impact of Tourism industryand to highlight the impact of COVID-19 on the Tourism industry in Myanmar. Primarydata are collected from (100) stakeholders (tour operators, hoteliers, and other tourismproviders) in the tourism industry in Yangon by using simple random sampling methodthrough structured questionnaires. This study uses descriptive method to examine thecollected data. The result indicates that tourism is one of the major sources of Myanmar’sGDP. Since the combined profits from hotels, restaurants, and transportation businessesthat are partially reliant on tourism are substantially greater, at 16% of GDP, this isanticipated to have a significant influence on the economy. It has also been pointed outthat Myanmar’s tourism industry is mostly dependent on international factors and foreigntourists. Since 2021, limitations have been loosened as Myanmar has been able to controlthe COVID-19 virus. The study's findings indicate that the COVID-19 outbreak has hada detrimental economic and social impact on Myanmar's tourism sector. Financial loss, adecline in customer demand on an international and national level, disruptions in thedistribution system, and ruined connections with suppliers, customers, and employeesare just a few examples of economic repercussions. Among the business owners, thesocial impact included depression, annoyance, anxiety, and tension due to the current andpotential future circumstances. Overall analyses suggest that building the capacity ofstakeholders and encourage public-private partnership activities in order to develop andmanage future tourism sector.

Abstract

This study was conducted in Lawang Ombo, located in Lasem District, Rembang Regency, Central Jawa. Lawang Ombo is a residential building built by Liem King Siok. Lawang Ombo has previously been used as a place for opium smuggling, which is a profitable illegal trade. The descriptive-comparative method was used in this study to compare the condition of Lawang Ombo as a tourism destination based on historical buildings before and during the pandemic and its management. The results of this study indicate that before the Covid-19 pandemic, Lawang Ombo was the location for various cultural performances. Visitors come from various cities in Central Java. During the pandemic, all cultural activities at Lawang Ombo were stopped. Very few visitors came and only came from Rembang. This makes no income from tourists for management costs. The next impact is that this building looks dirty and less maintenance. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that historic building-based tourism destinations that rely on income from tourists, especially through cultural performances, need to have income from other sources for management costs so that when performances are not possible to be held, the management of these historic buildings can continue. Keywords: Tourism Destination; Historical Building; Lawang Ombo; Pandemic.

I then entered this data into the Mendeley References application and processed the tabulated data using Microsoft Excel. The data was further analyzed using VosViewer software to map research topics and interpret their relationships and relevance values. Results and discussions: The results of the analysis show that research with the theme of ecotourism has indeed been widely carried out and has a close relationship with similar research themes as following existing research clusters. Conclusion: Specific themes such as marine ecotourism, ecotourism management, local communities, ecotourism projects, sustainable development, relationships, and sustainable tourism are likely to be important research areas in the future. It's worth noting that the journal articles obtained from the Google Scholar database may include articles from both accredited and non-accredited journals.
