Abstract

This study analyzes the impact of the prohibition of marijuana cultivation after the implementation of the top-down policy on the local community in Lamteuba. This research applies the four stages of historical methods. The first method, heuristics, involves collecting written sources and oral sources. The second stage is source criticism. A thorough verification and evaluation were done on the collected data, followed by interpretation of the verified sources. The final stage is historiography. The study discovers that the locals of Lamteuba traditionally used marijuana for local needs. However, these practices conflicted with the law established by the central government starting in 1976, which prohibits the use of marijuana. The policy is contrary to local customs. This research is expected to contribute to research in the fields of political history and cultural history, particularly in understanding the cultural impacts of legal prohibitions imposed by authorities.

Abstract

The Aceh War (1873-1903) was one of the most critical and protracted armed conflicts in the history of Dutch colonialism in the Indonesian archipelago. This article aims to examine the background of the Aceh War through a thematic approach to three key aspects: colonial political expansion, the influence of Islamic ideology, and community participation, as manifested in the "People's War" (Perang Semesta). The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach grounded in a review of secondary sources, including historical books, academic papers, and digital archives. The findings show that the conflict was fueled not just by Dutch colonial ambition following the 1871 Sumatra Treaty, but also by jihad discourse bolstered through religious writing like The Hikayat Perang Sabil and collective social opposition. This research highlights the importance of an interdisciplinary approach in understanding local resistance as a multifaceted manifestation of political, cultural, and spiritual conflict.

Abstract

This study aims to relate the historical phenomena of Minangkabau migrants from West Sumatra in Duri City of Riau Province, 1961-2024, to the socio-political and socio-economical developments that caused migration and resettlement. Data collection involves the historical method (heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography), and primary research involves archives, population data, journal articles, testimonies from Minangkabau Duri migrants, and Duri elders in the Mandau District. The results of this study indicate that the socio-political and socio-economical developments that cause migration and resettlement are two different levels. Large scale migrations per PRRI-caused political tension and subsequent economic hardship - and patterns of migration in 1958. Development of the PT Caltex Duri Oil and subsequent oil fields represent the most immediate push and pull factors to migrate and resettle as advancements to avoid deterrents and new employment opportunities emerged. Accordingly, Duri became and continues to be a multi-ethnic industrial town filled with changes of eras that Minangkabau migrants successfully adapted to - while maintaining cultural continuity through language, Minangkabau customs, and associated community-based organizations. They contributed to trade, education, services, and oil, furthering Duri's socio-economics. Yet despite a multicultural atmosphere, strong attachment to emotion and culture remains at home. This study connects armed conflict to oil advancements and cultural attachment for the Minangkabau diaspora and modern Duri City socio-economically transformed.

Abstract

Jemparingan, the traditional seated archery of the Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Sultanate, represents a unique cultural heritage that integrates physical practice with spiritual self-development. Addressing the need for character education in the digital age, this study investigates how Jemparingan fosters essential focus and discipline within Generation Z. Utilizing a historical and anthropological approach, the research analyzes the sport’s historical evolution from a royal-exclusive tradition to a modern cultural practice, while examining its philosophical emphasis on the unity of mind and body. The study further evaluates current preservation challenges and identifies key policy efforts necessary to sustain this tradition. Results indicate that the sport’s distinct cross-legged technique demands acute concentration and fine motor control, serving as an effective pedagogical tool for instilling self-regulation. The paper concludes that integrating Jemparingan into modern educational frameworks offers a strategic avenue for cultural continuity and for supporting the psychological development of contemporary adolescents.
