Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out what is motive or purpose transactional and interactional talk used in Escape from Alcatraz movie based on McCarthy’s theory. This research used qualitative descriptive method where the source of data was obtained from Escape from Alcatraz movie. The data were collected by watching the movie, coding and classifying the data. The researcher discovered that the movie has a transactional and interactional talk which is Frank Morris during his time in Alcatraz Prison; Morris knew guards treated inmates inhumanely. Seeing this condition, he invited two colleagues to escape from Alcatraz. This plan is almost impossible to carry out, but they are not desperate. They planned in detail what to do to redeem the defensive fortress of Alcatraz. Using transactional talks, slowly but surely, this secret was revealed by Morris by telling the actual situation. Thus, to reveal a secret, sometimes the main character Frank Morris use any transactional talk to disclose deeper information that is deliberately concealed, which happens in this movie. The results showed that Transactional talk is the most dominant compared to interactional talk, because every conversation carried out by the main character Frank Morris is closely related to telling someone something they need to know, exchanging information or giving ideas, and getting someone to do something based on McCarthy’s theory.

Abstract

This study purposed to show the image of Victorian women in England through the playwright script An Ideal Husband written by Oscar Wilde. Feminist criticism proposed by Elaine Showalter is used as a tool to analyze the women images in the drama script, particularly dealing with Victorian women. The result of the analysis indicated that the script presents women in two faces; women as angels and women as demons. A woman as an angel is described as an ideal image of a woman in Victorian society. They are portrayed as women who maintain piety, purity, submission, and domesticity in societal life. Whereas Women as demon is described as the opposite ones, a contradicting image against the values of traditional Victorian women. They have an aggressive, independent and ambitious attitude which were prohibited to be owned by women. Angel seems represented the ideal image of women in patriarchal norms. Demon, in the other hand, is the picturesque of ideal women in feminist perspective.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the magical realism narrative in the novel Damar Kambang by Muna Masyari. The author uses magical realism studies according to Wendy B. Faris, which include irreducible elements, the phenomenal world, disturbing doubts, merging of nature, and disturbances in time, space, and identity. This research uses a library method with a qualitative descriptive approach. The research results show that there are four characteristics of magical realism in Damar Kambang's novels, namely irreducible elements consisting of magical objects, magical time, magical sounds, magical characters, magical events, and beliefs or myths. Next there is the phenomenal world, which is divided into objects, times, places, characters, and events. There are also disturbing doubts about objects and events. Lastly, there is a combination of nature, consisting of objects and events. Overall, this research shows that the Damar Kambang novel, which uses Wendy B. Faris' magical realism study, tends towards magical or mystical elements that most people believe. This can be seen from the presence of magical objects, sounds, figures, and events, such as japa water, which is believed to cure disease, water used to soak in used Kolor, which can affect cows, the sound of people calling without physical form, shamans who have the power to influence humans and supernatural practices. The situation where the supranatural is real encourages the emergence of beliefs or myths, which become the main theme in the novel Damar Kambang.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze in-depth the deviations of linguistic politeness principles manifested in the oral communication of students at Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri (SMAN) 2 Kendari through the lens of pragmatic analysis, grounded in Leech's politeness principle theoretical framework. Employing spontaneous conversation data from students in grades X, XI, and XII, collected through audio recording and verbatim transcription methods, this qualitative study identifies and classifies various forms of deviations from the maxims of politeness. The research findings indicate that the phenomenon of politeness principle deviation occurs quite frequently in verbal interactions among students, potentially leading to negative impacts on the quality of social relationships and the conduciveness of the learning environment at school. Furthermore, this research has implications for providing practical insights for educators in formulating learning strategies that explicitly emphasize the urgency of polite and ethical communication, as well as enhancing students' metacognitive awareness regarding the pragmatic consequences of their language choices in building and maintaining positive social interactions.
