Abstract

Abstract

This study analyzes how national online media construct and respond to the dominant and dramatic communication style of public official Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa. The research aims to (1) examine how media framing constructs Purbaya’s communication style, (2) identify the representation of dominant and dramatic communication characteristics in quoted statements and media narratives, and (3) explain media resistance mechanisms that emerge through framing practices. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study applies Robert N. Entman’s Framing Theory and James McCroskey’s Communication Style Theory. The data consist of news articles published by four national online media outlets, CNN Indonesia, Tempo.co, Kompas.com, and Detik.com, during the period from September 8 to November 30, 2025. Data were collected through documentation of selected news texts and analyzed by examining framing elements and communication style indicators across media outlets. The findings show that each media outlet constructs Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa’s communication style differently according to its editorial orientation. CNN Indonesia and Tempo.co tend to normalize dominant and dramatic communication as part of institutional authority through technocratic and policy-oriented framing, resulting in minimal media resistance. In contrast, Kompas.com produces normative resistance by evaluating communication style based on public communication ethics, while Detik.com emphasizes dramatic and confrontational elements, generating symbolic resistance through sensational and conflict-oriented framing. The study concludes that media resistance toward a public official’s communication style is not uniform, but is shaped by selective framing strategies and editorial priorities, demonstrating the media’s active role in constructing public perception rather than merely reflecting individual communication traits.

Abstract

The film Women from Rote Island (2023) depicts women's struggles on Rote Island facing repeated sexual violence in a strong patriarchal society. This study analyzes the representation of hegemonic masculinity using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory through the stages of denotation, connotation, and myth. The findings show that male characters as perpetrators are represented as symbols of dominant power that normalize control over women's bodies through physical and social violence. The myth of patriarchy is portrayed as a system perpetuating women's subordination, while Orpa and her daughters' resistance begins to deconstruct this hegemony. This research emphasizes the importance of myth deconstruction to promote gender equality in indigenous communities.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of exposure to Unilever boycott news on consumer purchasing interest among residents of RT 007/RW 001 Palmerah, West Jakarta. The study used an explanatory quantitative approach with a purposive sampling technique. A total of 86 respondents were selected from a population of 109 heads of families based on the Slovin formula. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using simple linear regression with the help of SPSS 25. The results showed that exposure to news had a negative and significant effect on purchasing interest (t = –6.197) (p < 0.001). The coefficient of determination (R²) value of 0.339 indicates that 33.9% of the variation in purchasing interest is explained by exposure to news, while 66.1% is influenced by other factors. A regression coefficient of –0.576 indicates that the higher the exposure to boycott news, the lower consumer purchasing interest. Thus, exposure to boycott news has been shown to significantly reduce purchasing interest, confirming that media messages can influence consumer attitudes and behavioral tendencies. These findings indicate that the quality and relevance of news content play an important role in shaping consumer behavior, so that the stronger and more meaningful the message received, the greater the potential for increased purchasing interest.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to examine the cultural meanings, communication practices, power dynamics, and the role of actor networks in the Seren Taun ceremony in Cigugur Village, Kuningan Regency. A qualitative approach was employed, with data collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. The findings indicate that the cultural meanings of Seren Taun are conveyed through symbols, such as rice in the ngajayak procession, the Buyung Dance, Angklung Buncis, and the rice-pounding (nutu) ritual, which represent values of gratitude, social cohesion, balance in life, and the continuity of relationships between humans, nature, and the divine. Furthermore, the study reveals that traditional leaders play a central role as cultural communicators through verbal and nonverbal strategies. Verbal communication is expressed through traditional speeches that reinforce cultural values and authority, while nonverbal communication is reflected in exemplary actions and the involvement of the younger generation in ritual practices. From the perspective of power relations theory, the authority of traditional leaders operates symbolically and persuasively rather than coercively, enabling cultural values to be accepted and internalized by the community. In addition, Actor-Network Theory highlights that cultural meanings are produced through interactions between human actors such as traditional leaders and community members and non-human actors, including ritual symbols and artifacts. This interconnected network ensures the continuous reproduction and transmission of cultural values. Overall, the Seren Taun ceremony functions not only as a ritual tradition but also as a sustainable medium of cultural communication that maintains the identity and continuity of the Sunda Wiwitan community amid social change.

Abstract

This study stems from the phenomenon of the prevalence of beauty standards on social media, which often portray women with bodies and faces considered ideal, yet these do not always align with reality. Amid this context, the Instagram account @beauty_byaudy offers a different perspective on the meaning of “beauty.” This study aims to understand how the meaning of beauty is constructed through the content posted by this account using Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic analysis. The study adopts a qualitative descriptive approach, with data gathered through observation, literature study, and interviews. The analysis is centered on five selected video posts, including their captions, hastags, and audience comments, to identify the meaning conveyed through visual and textual elements. The findings demonstrate a shift in the representasion of beauty, moving away from conventional ideals of physical perfection toward values such as self-acceptance, confidence, and the freedom o express oneself through makeup. In addition, the content highlights that skin conditions like acne and texture are normal and should not be stigmatized. The results indicate that the constructed meaning of beauty no longer emphasizes physical perfection but rather self-acceptance, self-confidence, and freedom of expression through makeup. These contents also affirm that conditions such as skin texture or acne are normal. This study concludes that social media can serve as a space to foster a more open and humanistic understanding of beauty. Moving forward, the research is limited in scope similar research is expected to expand the scope of study and incorporate direct perspectives from content creator.
