Abstract

The limited and competitive job opportunities currently make students worry about the prospective job after graduating from college, so students' alternative in facing such competition in the working world is by creating their own business. The new contribution in this research is how students divide their time between studying and entrepreneurship, and how they maintain their start-up business. Using a qualitative approach, this study combines in-depth interviews and observation as data collection techniques. The study was conducted at the Faculty of Agriculture, Hasanuddin University, which took place from September to December 2022. There are ten informants who took part in this study whose age ranging between 19 and 23 years old. They are from Faculty of Agriculture in the field of Agribusiness, Agrotechnology and Plant Protection. The study shows that entrepreneurship is an alternative job for students to earn income and to face competition in working world. This is caused by socio-cultural factors, which include family environment, entrepreneurship education, student entrepreneurial culture development programs, social environment in influencing students' interest and motivation for entrepreneurship. The strategies applied for their business include time management, division of labour, relationships between individuals, pricing and marketing strategies. Abstract

Marriage in the Passampo Siri' practice is contrary to the provisions contained in the Sexual Violence Crime Law (UU TPKS), because the marriage carried out often excludes the consent of one of the parties to be married. The TPKS Law regulates that child marriage is a forced marriage, whereas in the Passampo Siri' practice the victim is often still a child, so this is the conflict between the Passampo Siri' practice and the TPKS Law. This research aims to identify the practice of Passampo Siri' from the perspective of the TPKS Law and to describe the concept of antithetical harmonization through anti-litigation channels in resolving the incompatibility of Passampo Siri' local wisdom with the TPKS Law in Sidrap Regency. This research uses a qualitative method through an in-depth interview process with an unstructured interview type with 14 sources and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) through purposive sampling with 6 sources. The data analysis techniques used are content analysis and argumentative descriptive analysis. The results show that the Passampo Siri' practice is contrary to the TPKS Law. Apart from that, forced marriages in the Passampo Siri' practice can be resolved through deliberation while still paying attention to the values and norms that exist in society to achieve harmonization.

Abstract

This research analyzes the impact of social dynamics on the practice of the massolo tradition, which involves exchanging materials as an act of reciprocity. This research analyzes the impact of social dynamics on the practice of the massolo tradition, which involves exchanging materials as an act of reciprocity. The study aims to examine the changes caused by this tradition in various aspects, including social, economic, cultural, and community welfare. The study employed an ethnographic method using a qualitative descriptive approach. The data was collected through participant observation and in-depth interviews with various stakeholders, including the community, traditional leaders, and the government of Bonto Baji Village, Kajang District, Bulukumba Regency. The findings indicate that the socio-economic dynamics of the Massolo tradition have led to significant changes in cultural values and social structures. The shift from solidarity to focus results in social inequality and conflict. The high financial burden, specifically the exorbitant nominal passolo, makes repayment difficult and leads to debt. The massolo tradition is viewed as an investment. Changes in social norms affect social relations and the community's economy. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen management of the impact to maintain a balance between cultural, social, and economic aspects. This research aims to develop practical solutions to the social and economic challenges faced by the community.

Abstract

This article describes a health anthropology study of fracture treatment decision-making in Barru District, located 100 km north of Makassar City, the capital of South Sulawesi Province. In this region, almost every sub- district has traditional medical practitioners capable of treating fractures, as well as modern healers at La Patari Regional General Hospital who provide fracture healing services through a surgical clinic. The community has a choice between traditional and modern health services to treat fractures. This study used qualitative methods with a qualitative approach. Informants were purposively selected, consisting of 18 people including fracture sufferers, their families, and healers. The results showed that fracture sufferers' knowledge of their fracture condition was based on several indicators, such as abnormal bone shape, bone penetrating the skin, reduced energy, and pain when moved. X-ray examination also strengthens the patient's understanding of their fracture condition. The understanding of fracture risk is gained from observing other people with fractures and other conditions that co-occur with fractures, such as problems with the flesh. This knowledge influences the treatment decision-making process, where the patient and family caregiver will discuss the treatment methods to be used, either with one treatment method or a combination of two methods carried out alternately or simultaneously. Factors that influence the decision-making process in utilizing health services for people with fractures in Barru District include knowledge about the fracture condition, sources of treatment, information from surrounding people, comfort of the family caregiver, and economic factors related to medical expenses. These factors are interconnected and are a consideration for patients and families in choosing the treatment sector that is considered appropriate.

Abstract

The presence of women’s movements in rural areas offers an important field for anthropological study, particularly in understanding gender roles, collective action, and local development. This research examines the KWT Mattiro Deceng, a Women Farmers Group located in Karampuang Hamlet, Botolempangan Village, West Sinjai Subdistrict, Sinjai Regency. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and literature review. The group was established to encourage women’s participation in agriculture, strengthen their skills, and improve household and village economies. Beyond farming activities, the KWT also functions as a social space where members exchange knowledge, build solidarity, and negotiate their roles within family and community life. Since women’s farmer groups are not yet fully integrated into rural development, this study explores the group’s activities, internal dynamics, challenges, and contributions. The findings highlight the importance of collective organization in expanding women’s participation, confidence, and economic opportunities in rural communities.

Abstract

In the era of globalization, the use of Smartphones is increasingly widespread and often affects direct interaction between individuals, leading to phubbing behavior defined as neglect of others. Although recognized as disturbing behavior, the important role of Smartphones in everyday life cannot be ignored, including among Hasanuddin University students who influence their interaction patterns. Therefore, the purpose of this study is 1) Describes the student's view of phubbing behavior. 2) Describing the phubbing behavior that usually occurs among Hasanuddin University students, 3) describes the impact of phubbing behavior among Hasanuddin University students. This study used qualitative research with participation observation techniques, in-depth interviews, and literature studies. Then the informant is determined using a snowball sampling technique that requires informants based on networking, namely from friend to friend in accessing other informants regarding phubbing behavior. Research results show that phubbing behavior among Unhas students is considered to be behavior that does not value the existence of others in direct interaction. Phubbing behavior is known to ignore effective social interactions and thus affect the quality of interactions between students. In addition, some students also view phubbing behavior as a natural aspect of social evolution influenced by technological advances in today's digital era. Phubbing occurs due to internal and external factors such as individual tendencies toward Smartphones and supportive environments. The impact of phubbing can be seen in the context of lectures and friendship relationships, such as disrupting the teaching and learning process and stretching social relationships. In addition, phubbing behavior also affects individuals who do, such as decreased social interest and difficulty interacting with others. This suggests that phubbing is a significant social phenomenon with varying effects both individually and socially.

Abstract

This article examines how residents of a pseudonymous highland farming village in Gowa Regency respond to Law Number 16 of 2019, which sets the minimum marriage age for women and men at nineteen. The study asks why child marriage continues, how residents define readiness for marriage, and how village institutions manage marriages conducted before the statutory age. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, fieldwork was conducted in March and September 2024 through participant observation and in-depth interviews with five married couples, village religious officials, local residents, and a teacher. The findings show that chronological age is not the main local measure of adulthood. Readiness is assessed through the ability to cultivate land, earn income, and assume family responsibilities. Children become involved in farming from an early age, may receive plots from their parents, and are consequently regarded as economically capable before reaching nineteen. Schooling is less valued than agricultural competence, while the village’s customary and religious institutions facilitate unregistered marriages locally called nikah adat and later assist couples in obtaining legal recognition through marriage validation proceedings. Residents describe marriage as a means of preventing premarital relations and cultivating responsibility, yet the data also reveal interrupted education, weak legal protection, rushed partner selection, and divorce risks. The article argues that the limited effect of the statutory age rule is not simply a matter of legal ignorance. It reflects a locally integrated system linking family, land, work, education, religion, and village authority. Effective prevention therefore requires dialogue with local institutions, continued schooling, livelihood alternatives, reproductive-health information, and accessible legal services rather than reliance on age regulation alone.

Abstract

This article critically reviews Frank Fanselow’s explanation of Dayak–Madurese ethnic conflict in Kalimantan and situates it within broader debates on ethnic boundaries, resource competition, political transition, identity mobilization, and local institutional capacity. Using an integrative-critical literature review, it synthesizes Fanselow’s article and thirteen additional academic references selected for conceptual relevance, empirical focus on Indonesia or Kalimantan, publication quality, and verifiable bibliographic records. The review finds that Fanselow’s main contribution lies in treating Dayak knowledge as social theory rather than merely local data and in challenging economic reductionism. Nevertheless, the idea of a “clash of cultures” risks reifying Dayak and Madurese communities as homogeneous groups, naturalizing stereotypes, and obscuring the roles of regime transition, local elite competition, territorial control, rumors, and weakened security arrangements. The article proposes a multilevel explanatory model linking five layers: historical-structural legacies, political-institutional change, territorial-economic contestation, the production of ethnic boundaries and stereotypes, and triggering and mobilization mechanisms. This synthesis argues that culture matters as a language through which conflict is interpreted and organized, but it is not an autonomous or automatic cause. Reconciliation therefore requires recognition of local categories alongside institutional reform, rights protection, social relationship recovery, and safeguards against the political instrumentalization of identity.
