Abstract

This study investigates the pragmatic function of speech acts performed by Jo March in Greta Gerwig’s film Little Women (2019). By adopting a qualitative descriptive approach, this research analyzes Jo’s utterances using Speech Act Theory and feminist linguistic perspectives to explore how her language reflects resistance to 19th-century gender norms. Data were collected through transcription of selected scenes and categorized using Searle’s taxonomy—assertives, directives, commissives, expressives, and declarations. A feminist reading was applied to examine how each speech act functions to assert identity and challenge patriarchy. The analysis reveals that Jo’s utterances express autonomy, emotional depth, and social critique, reflecting the broader feminist agenda embedded in her linguistic choices. Her speech not only conveys personal aspirations but also becomes a performative act of resistance, making her character a powerful voice for gender equality in modern cinema.

Abstract

Sociolinguistics pays considerable attention to the bilingualism. As a communication strategy, bilingual communities often employ code-mixing. Nowadays, code-mixing can be observed in interactions on digital platforms. This study aims to describe the types and factors of code-mixing by Arabic speakers in the #ABtalks podcast. The types are analyzed using Muysken’s theory and the factors using Hoffman-Troike’s theory. The method used for this research is descriptive qualitative analysis through direct element division (BUL) and referential pairing. The findings indicate 119 insertion data, 78 alternation data, and 24 data of congruent lexicalization. The use of code-mixing is influenced by several factors, such as lexical needs, emphasizing something, filling and connecting sentences, repetition for clarification, talking about certain topics, refining requests or orders, and the efficiency of a conversation. This research contributes to the understanding of bilingual speech patterns and reflects the linguistic flexibility of Arabic in the digital world.

Abstract

This study focuses on examining the function of implicature in conversations found in Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's novel Le Petit Prince, using Leech's theory of implicature as its main foundation. Pragmatics, particularly implicature in conversation, is the main focus because it reveals implied meanings that are not explicitly stated by the speaker, while also describing the relationship between context, purpose, and interactions between characters. The novel Le Petit Prince was chosen because of the moral values and symbolism conveyed through simple but meaningful dialogues. Descriptive qualitative methods were used in this study, with observation and recording techniques as a means of collecting data in the form of characters' utterances in the novel. Data analysis was carried out through a process of reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing, with triangulation as a means of validating the results. The results of the study show that there are 12 implicature functions in the conversations, consisting of 2 assertive functions, 5 directive functions, 2 commissive functions, and 3 expressive functions. The dominance of the directive function in the novel indicates the existence of power dynamics in the relationships between characters, as well as reflecting the social and moral values that the author wants to convey through symbolic dialogue. The findings are expected to provide a deeper understanding of the important role of directive implicatures in character and plot development in novels, as well as their relevance to further research in the fields of literature and pragmatics.

Abstract

This research examined the semiotic construction of fashion power in the film The Devil Wears Prada by applying Saussure’s concepts of the signifier and the signified. The topic was important because fashion in cinema often influences public perceptions of professionalism, social legitimacy, and identity, yet its meaning-making process has rarely been explained in structural detail. The purpose of the study was to examine how fashion communicates power and social belonging in the film’s workplace setting. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method, in which twenty scenes were analyzed by documenting visual elements of costume, footwear, accessories, and bodily presentation, and by interpreting their symbolic meanings within a semiotic framework. The findings showed that fashion consistently acted as a signifier of authority, social acceptance, and identity negotiation, and even subtle auditory cues such as the sound of heels contributed to hierarchical meaning. The study concluded that fashion does not simply decorate the narrative but functions as the core mechanism through which power relations and character transformation are communicated. These results suggest that fashion in visual media shapes the audience’s understanding of professional success and that mastery of visual codes is represented as a requirement for social legitimacy in the workplace.
