Abstract

In today’s dynamic organisational landscape, strategic internal communication has become a crucial driver of employee engagement and performance. Traditional top-down communication methods are increasingly being replaced by integrative approaches that align employee behaviour with organisational goals. This shift is particularly significant in paramilitary organisations, where hierarchical structures and rigid protocols often hinder transparent and inclusive communication. This study employs a descriptive research method, drawing on secondary sources such as literature, media reports, official documents, and online resources relevant to internal communication and employee engagement within the Nigeria Customs Service. Grounded in the Two-Way Symmetrical Theory of Public Relations, which emphasises reciprocal communication and mutual understanding between employees and leadership, this paper examines the unique communication challenges within the Service. These challenges are shaped by the organisation’s diverse roles in revenue generation, trade facilitation, and law enforcement. The findings indicate that effective internal communication—supported by structured feedback mechanisms and transparency—enhances employee participation, satisfaction, and overall job performance. The study concludes that strategic internal communication not only mitigates operational complexities but also strengthens organisational cohesion, discipline, and shared values, all of which are essential for achieving institutional objectives.

Abstract

The evolution of streaming technologies has significantly influenced cinematographic techniques, reshaping the way filmmakers approach lighting, framing, and overall visual composition. Unlike traditional cinema, which relies on controlled viewing environments to ensure optimal image fidelity, streaming platforms must accommodate a variety of screen sizes, resolutions, and lighting conditions. This shift necessitates adaptations in cinematography to maintain visual clarity and engagement across diverse viewing contexts. This study employs a qualitative analysis of contemporary cinematographic practices in streaming content, drawing from case studies of films and series distributed on major platforms. Additionally, industry reports and expert interviews provide insights into how digital distribution reshapes aesthetic and technical strategies. The research examines cinematographic trends such as increased reliance on high-contrast lighting, tighter framing, and the impact of compression algorithms and HDR technology on color grading and dynamic range choices. Findings indicate that cinematographers increasingly adjust their techniques to suit streaming environments. High-contrast lighting enhances visibility on mobile devices, while tighter framing ensures compositional clarity on smaller screens. Moreover, technological advancements in compression and HDR have led filmmakers to reconsider traditional color grading approaches. The study also highlights how algorithm-driven recommendations and binge-watching culture influence narrative pacing and visual style, leading to new creative strategies in storytelling. The results suggest that the transition from traditional cinema to streaming platforms is not merely a shift in distribution but a fundamental transformation in visual storytelling. Streaming technologies not only shape cinematographic choices but also redefine audience engagement.

Abstract

This study examines postcolonial African literature, focusing on the themes of identity and societal pressures in contemporary settings. The research is based on Akwaeke Emezi’s novel, The Death of Vivek Oji, which presents a complex portrayal of identity formation within a postcolonial society. Using a postcolonial analytical framework, this study critically explores the sociocultural values embedded in the novel and their influence on the protagonist’s life decisions. The analysis considers how postcolonial theory helps in understanding the preservation of identity amidst colonial legacies and societal constraints. The findings indicate that postcolonial societies often struggle to maintain their cultural identity due to the historical impact of colonialism, which sought to erase indigenous identities. The novel reveals that traditional values exert significant pressure on individuals, particularly those who deviate from societal norms, leading to conflicts between personal identity and collective expectations. This study highlights how postcolonial societies resist new Western ideologies out of fear of further identity transformation. The rejection of these ideas stems from a deep-rooted need to reclaim and safeguard cultural heritage. The analysis suggests that the protagonist’s struggles reflect broader societal tensions in postcolonial contexts. The study underscores the ongoing conflict between cultural preservation and modern influences in postcolonial societies, emphasizing the lasting effects of colonial legacies on identity formation.

Abstract

Organisations and businesses face complex challenges in their daily operations, both intrapersonal and interpersonal, which can impact their effectiveness, reputation, and employee job satisfaction. Ineffective crisis management may lead to low morale, decreased productivity, and increased turnover rates. This study examines the relationship between public relations tools, crisis management, and employee job satisfaction in the Nigerian Shippers' Council. This study is based on Stakeholder Theory and employs a correlational survey research design. A purposive sampling technique was used, with total enumeration yielding 433 respondents. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings indicate that 98.3% of respondents preferred WhatsApp group communication due to its interactive and inclusive nature. Furthermore, press releases and media briefings were minimally used during crises, with 80% and 76.8% of respondents, respectively, stating they were only occasionally employed. The study highlights the importance of digital communication platforms, particularly WhatsApp groups and online surveys, in enhancing real-time engagement with employees and stakeholders. It is recommended that the Nigerian Shippers’ Council prioritize these tools to improve crisis management strategies and boost employee job satisfaction.

Abstract

This study analyzes how the film Air Mata di Ujung Sajadah presents Islamic communication principles and identifies dialogues that contradict them. Using a qualitative descriptive approach and content analysis based on Miles and Huberman's framework, the research examines six key principles: qaulan sadida, qaulan layyina, qaulan ma’rufa, qaulan karima, qaulan maysura, and qaulan baligha. The findings highlight the film's representation of ethical and moral values in Islamic communication within a religious-themed narrative. The findings indicate that the film effectively integrates Islamic communication principles, making it a potential medium for social learning through message observation, aligning with Melvin DeFleur’s Social Learning Theory. The interaction between characters frequently reflects Islamic communication values. Specifically, qaulan sadida appears 8 times, qaulan layyina 4 times, qaulan ma’rufa 9 times, qaulan karima 12 times, qaulan maysura 2 times, and qaulan baligha 5 times. Despite the strong representation of Islamic communication principles, the study also identifies dialogue that contradicts these values. Instances of qaulan sadida being violated through dishonesty appear 6 times, harsh speech contradicting qaulan layyina occurs 5 times, disrespectful words opposing qaulan karima appear 5 times, and inappropriate words conflicting with qaulan ma’rufa are also found 5 times. These findings suggest that while the film promotes Islamic communication ethics, it also depicts real-life conflicts that challenge these principles, reflecting the complexities of social interactions.

Abstract

Suicide is a pressing public health concern in Nigeria, yet the extent to which it is reported in the media remains unclear. The mass media serves a critical role in shaping public awareness and framing social issues. This study explores how suicide cases are reported by Nigerian online newspapers and whether such coverage aligns with the media’s social responsibility. Using a quantitative content analysis method, the study examined suicide-related articles published in The Punch and The Guardian online editions between April and December 2019. A total of 540 newspaper issues (270 from each outlet) were analyzed using purposive sampling. Data were categorized based on story frequency, genre, paragraph length, and number of deaths reported. Theoretical framing was guided by Agenda-Setting Theory, Cultivation Theory, and Social Responsibility Theory. A total of 75 suicide-related stories were identified. Most were brief (1–10 paragraphs) and appeared in the metro section, with little investigative or thematic depth. The Punch contributed more stories (57.3%) compared to The Guardian (42.7%). Despite the high number of suicides in Nigeria, the overall media coverage was found to be minimal and inconsistent. Findings suggest significant underreporting and a lack of meaningful engagement with suicide as a societal issue. The media has not fulfilled its role in setting the public agenda or cultivating awareness. Suicide is often framed episodically rather than thematically, limiting its visibility as a public health concern. This undermines the media’s potential to educate, warn, and mobilize action against suicide. The study concludes that Nigerian newspapers have not adequately reported on suicide, failing to meet the standards of socially responsible journalism. Broader media monitoring and audience-focused research are needed to understand the full impact of media coverage on suicide perception and prevention.

Abstract

Digital platforms have become the main source of news for Indonesians, with internet penetration reaching over 77% by 2024. However, the shift to digital news consumption has brought challenges, particularly the presence of analytical information bias such as emotional language, one-sided framing, and the blending of facts with opinions. This study explores how such bias impacts public news consumption behavior in Indonesia. Using a qualitative approach, this research collected data through in-depth interviews with active digital news consumers. Participants were selected purposively to represent different age groups, professions, and digital literacy levels. Data were analyzed thematically to understand patterns in how people perceive and respond to biased news. The study found that many users consume news quickly and uncritically, often influenced by headlines or emotional tone. Analytical bias in news affects how people interpret information, leading to polarized opinions, mistrust in media, and low information literacy. Only a small group of users with higher digital literacy showed efforts to verify and balance the information they receive. Information bias on digital platforms has a complex impact on how Indonesians consume news. It shapes public opinion, weakens critical thinking, and contributes to societal divisions. To address this, collaboration is needed between media, educators, and policymakers to strengthen media literacy and create a healthier information ecosystem. This study is limited by its qualitative scope and sample size; future research could involve broader data collection and mixed methods to deepen the findings.

Abstract

Moral education in Islam emphasizes the development of akhlaq (Islamic character), yet pedagogical strategies to internalize these values often rely on monologic instruction. This study explores dialogic engagement as a transformative communication model for Islamic moral education. Using a qualitative library research method, this study analyzed classical Islamic texts, contemporary moral education theories, and recent empirical studies on communication and character development. Content and thematic analysis were applied to synthesize key concepts and pedagogical practices. Findings indicate that dialogic communication through reflective dialogue, interactive Q&A, and value clarification facilitates the internalization of moral values by enhancing critical thinking, empathy, and ethical awareness. When supported by inclusive learning environments and integrated with narrative and demonstrative strategies, dialogic engagement promotes holistic moral development. The study positions dialogic engagement as both a prophetic tradition and a contemporary pedagogical need. It concludes that dialogic methods enable value co-construction between educators and learners. However, empirical research is needed to test its practical application across diverse Islamic educational settings.

Abstract

Cloned Facebook pages that mimic established newspapers pose a risk of misinformation, particularly for postgraduate students in Nigeria who are expected to have strong media-literacy skills. This study investigates their ability to distinguish authentic from cloned Facebook pages of Daily Trust and Vanguard, and identifies the cues and strategies they use in the evaluation process. Using a sequential explanatory mixed-methods approach, the study began with a survey of 372 postgraduate students across three universities in North-West Nigeria. It measured their knowledge of authenticity indicators such as verification badges, URLs, and contact details. This was followed by ten in-depth interviews with selected students and newspaper editors to explore their reasoning and institutional practices. Results show that fewer than 14% of students were aware of missing verification badges on cloned pages, and only about 20% recognized misuse of logos or names. Most relied on visual elements like logos and page titles rather than systematic checks. Editors also confirmed that clone detection is reactive, triggered mostly by user complaints. The findings indicate a gap between assumed competence and actual verification skills. The study recommends introducing a structured Digital Verification Training (DVT) program that includes theoretical instruction, hands-on exercises, case studies, and collaboration with media platforms to improve users' ability to verify online news sources.
