Abstract

The application of narrative analysis to Quranic interpretation (tafsir) has emerged as a significant methodological approach in contemporary Islamic scholarship, bridging classical exegetical traditions with modern literary theory. This systematic literature review examines the development of narrative analysis methodology as a formal analytical framework for interpreting the Qur’an between 2000 and 2025. In this study, tafsir is no longer treated as the primary methodological framework; rather, it is positioned as historical and textual data that can be analyzed using modern narratological tools. The analysis reveals three dominant approaches in treating tafsir texts as material objects: structural analysis, intertextual analysis, and contextual analysis. Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a comprehensive search across multiple academic databases, identifying 191 relevant studies. The review identifies significant methodological innovations, including the integration of digital humanities tools, comparative narrative approaches, and cross-cultural interpretive frameworks. Key findings indicate that narrative analysis in tafsir has evolved from descriptive storytelling approaches to sophisticated hermeneutical methodologies that engage with both classical Islamic exegetical traditions and contemporary literary theory. The study reveals gaps in comparative cross-cultural narrative analysis and limited integration of cognitive narrative theory. This review contributes to the understanding of contemporary tafsir methodology and provides a foundation for future research in narrative-based Quranic interpretation.

Abstract

This article examines kyai authority in nonformal Qur'anic education by focusing on how religious leaders obtain and exercise interpretive authority through their capacity to enliven the Qur'an according to community needs in Pelangwot Village, Lamongan, East Java. The study addresses two research questions: (1) what are the forms of kyai authority in nonformal educational contexts? (2) why do these kyai obtain authority in their community? Employing a qualitative case-study design, the research gathered data through participant observation in TPQ learning sessions and mau'izhah forums, semi-structured interviews with teachers, kyai, and students, and analysis of institutional documents and teaching references. Data were analyzed using thematic coding to identify recurring patterns. Findings reveal two key dimensions. First, the forms of kyai authority in nonformal settings are predominantly socio-cultural, rooted in teacher-student transmission chains and community recognition rather than formal institutional structures. Kyai authority operates through teacher-student knowledge transmission, tolerates interpretive differences to maintain harmony, and remains fragmented across institutions. Second, kyai obtain their authority through the continuous labor of enlivening the Qur'an—selectively mobilizing established verses and hadith including "khairukum man ta'allam al-Qur'āna wa 'allamahu," QS Āli 'Imrān 3:18, QS az-Zumar 39:9, and QS al-'Alaq 96:1-5 as motivational and legitimizing devices in daily pedagogical practice. The article argues that kyai authority in nonformal settings is assembled through persistent community-building labor that translates scriptural meanings into locally relevant moral guidance. This contributes to scholarship on Islamic religious authority by demonstrating how authority emerges not from formal credentials but from the ongoing work of making sacred texts alive for community needs.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the discourse and dialectical tension regarding the claim of independence of ijtihad in modern tafsir literature when faced with the sociological reality of exegetes who have strong ties to the authority of religious institutions. The main focus of this study is Tafsir Al-Hidayah by Sa'ad Abdul Wahid, an intellectual figure who once held a central position in the Muhammadiyah Tarjih Council. This tafsir work methodologically claims to use an izdiwajiy approach (a combination of narration and reason) independently, especially in interpreting legal verses such as the limits of women's genitals in Q.S. An-Nuur [24]: 31. Therefore, this study aims to critically examine the claim of independence by tracing and revealing the intertextual relationship between Tafsir Al-Hidayah and the official decisions of institutions contained in the Risalah Adabul Mar'ah Fil Islam. Using library-based qualitative research with Julia Kristeva's intertextuality analysis, this study dissects the ideological relationship between the genotext (the Adabul Mar'ah) and the phenotext (the Tafsir Al-Hidayah). The results of the study show three main findings: first, there is a parallelism of diction and identical argument structure related to the concepts of "modesty" and "social needs"; second, the operation of the politics of citing evidence through strict selection and exclusion of narrations that require the veil in order to accommodate the organization's views; and third, the transposition of functional-sociological logic regarding the public role of women from organizational documents into the narrative of the interpretation. These findings prove that methodological independence in the Tafsir Al-Hidayah is not inauthentic independence because the hermeneutic process has been framed by the collective institutional reasoning of Muhammadiyah.

Abstract

This study examines the epistemological construction of pesantren Qur’anic exegesis within a postcolonial framework by analyzing three contemporary works: Safīnah Kallā Saya‘lamūn, Hidayatul Qur’an, and Firdaus al-Na‘īm. The research addresses a persistent gap in scholarship that relegates pesantren exegesis to a marginal and non-innovative tradition, often overlooking its dynamic engagement with modern intellectual demands. Employing a qualitative interpretive method and drawing on Homi K. Bhabha’s postcolonial concepts of ambivalence, mimicry, and hybridity, this study explores how pesantren scholars negotiate between classical epistemic authority and contemporary academic expectations. The findings demonstrate that pesantren exegetes construct a hybrid form of knowledge through the selective integration of traditional authoritative frameworks with modern scholarly structures. This hybrid model highlights the agency of pesantren in shaping Qur’anic epistemology that is both contextually grounded and capable of challenging colonial and orientalist representations. The study argues that pesantren tafsir functions as an active participant in the global circulation of Qur’anic interpretation, offering alternative epistemic pathways that contribute significantly to the broader project of decolonizing Islamic studies.

Abstract

This article examines the functional representation of Qur’anic verses in the Indonesian religious horror film Qodrat 2, focusing on how the sacred text is recontextualized within a contemporary cinematic narrative. Rather than treating the Qur’an as a purely liturgical or textual authority, the film rearticulates it as a performative and visual agent embedded within the narrative conflict. This study examines how verses are selected, visualized, and how their meaning is produced within the film’s structure. Using Stuart Hall’s theory of representation, this study analyzes the construction of meaning through visual imagery, dialogue, and embodied performances. The findings indicate that Qodrat 2 reconstructs the Qur’an as an active symbolic force that mediates the struggle between human and supernatural entities. A total of 17 Qur’anic verses were identified as integral components of narrative development and character formation. More importantly, the film views the recitation of the Qur’an not merely as a ritual practice, but as a form of symbolic agency operating within a semi-heroic narrative logic. This study argues that such representations reflect a broader shift in the mediation of sacred texts within popular culture. The Qur’an is increasingly being reinterpreted through visual-performative modes. This transformation signifies an epistemological shift in religious meaning, particularly within the context of contemporary Islamic media and religious horror cinema in Indonesia.

Abstract

Tafsīr works from the post-classical period have received limited attention in modern Islamic studies due to the widespread assumption that the scholarly works of this period were merely a rigid repetition of earlier intellectual achievements. In recent years, however, a number of studies have sought to reexamine this assumption. Within this context, this study traces the development of tafsīr methodology in post-classical tafsīr works through an analysis of their introductions. The research is based on a close reading of the introductions to thirteen tafsīr works, with particular attention to several methodological issues that reflect the most significant developments and intellectual vitality of the period. The study finds that some of these introductions demonstrate methodological developments. These developments include discussions on the disciplines required for a a mufassir, debates over the legitimacy of mystical (ishārī) tafsīr and the arguments used to justify it, as well as the emergence of new methodological issues that had not been addressed in the introductions of earlier tafsīr works. These findings contribute to reconsidering the narrative of decline in the history of tafsīr during the post-classical period. They are based on a direct reading of tafsīr introductions as primary sources for examining the development of tafsīr methodology, an approach that has largely been absent from the evidence used to support the narrative of decline.

Abstract

This article seeks to investigate the role of visual illustrations as hermeneutical tools in Ashim Khan’s “The Kingdom of God: A Fully Illustrated Commentary on Surah al-Mulk”, and to elucidate their contribution to the advancement of contemporary Qur’anic exegesis methodology. This study is significant, as existing scholarship on visual exegesis has predominantly regarded visualisation as a medium for digital communication, reception, and religious popularisation, while its function as an integral element of the interpretive process has received comparatively limited academic attention. Employing a qualitative methodology with a content analysis approach, this research examines the visual representations within Khan’s work. The analysis utilises Stuart Hall’s encoding-decoding model to explore both the manner in which the exegete encodes meaning into visual representations and the way in which readers decode and reconstruct these meanings. The findings reveal that the visual illustrations in Khan’s commentary operate not merely as aesthetic enhancements but as hermeneutical devices that encode interpretive meanings through six distinct forms of visualisation: thematic diagrams, symmetry diagrams (naẓm), concept maps, timelines, relational diagrams, and analytical tables. These visual representations aid readers in comprehending the structure, coherence, and theological message of Sūrah al-Mulk, while simultaneously guiding them towards a preferred interpretation aligned with the exegete’s intended meaning. This study contributes to the expansion of discourse on visual exegesis by demonstrating that visualisation can be positioned as a contemporary exegetical method that integrates the classical naẓm tradition with modern visual culture, thereby enriching interdisciplinary approaches within contemporary Qur’anic studies.
