Abstract

Global climate change highlights the importance of carbon stock assessments in tropical forest ecosystems. This study aimed to quantify the biomass and carbon stock of Shorea montigena (Red Meranti) seedlings and to analyze the influence of environmental factors on seedling biomass in Honitetu Village, Inamosol District, West Seram Regency. A destructive method was applied to 30 seedlings classified into six height classes. Biomass was determined from total dry weight, and carbon stock was estimated using a conversion factor of 0.47 in accordance with SNI 7724:2019. Results showed seedling biomass ranged from 7.00 to 61.90 g, while carbon stock ranged from 3.29 to 29.09 g per individual. Simple regression confirmed that approximately 47% of dry biomass consists of carbon (R² = 1.00). Environmental factors simultaneously exerted a significant effect on biomass (R² = 0.952), with light intensity as the dominant positive factor, soil pH showing a significant negative effect, temperature a near-significant negative effect, and soil moisture not significant. These findings provide baseline data on carbon stock potential during the natural regeneration phase of S. montigena, serving as a scientific foundation for sustainable forest management and climate change mitigation strategies in Maluku’s tropical forests.

Abstract

Pakchong grass (Pennisetum purpureum × Pennisetum americanum) is one of the superior forages with high productivity potential; however, its production is strongly influenced by soil fertility and fertilization management. This study aimed to evaluate the productivity response of Pakchong grass to the application of chicken manure and cattle manure based on fresh weight production, dry weight production, and dry weight yield per hectare. The study employed a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of three treatments with five replications: without fertilizer (P0), chicken manure (P1), and cattle manure (P2). The observed variables included fresh weight production, and dry weight production, and dry weight production per hectare. Data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The results showed that the application of chicken manure and cattle manure significantly affected (P<0.05) all observed parameters. The highest fresh weight production was obtained in treatment P1 at 1.152 ± 0.239 kg, followed by P2 at 0.894 ± 0.287 kg, and P0 at 0.585 ± 0.153 kg. Similarly, the highest dry weight production was recorded in P1 at 0.1260 ± 0.0277 kg, followed by P2 at 0.1072 ± 0.0376 kg, and P0 at 0.0738 ± 0.0154 kg. The highest dry weight per hectare was also observed in P1 at 224.07 ± 49.03 kg/ha, followed by P2 at 190.72 ± 66.87 kg/ha, and P0 at 131.01 ± 28.31 kg/ha. It can be concluded that chicken manure application produced the best response in improving Pakchong grass productivity compared with cattle manure and no fertilizer application.

Abstract

The availability of clean water in coastal and small island areas has become an increasingly complex challenge due to climate change and growing community demands. Hukurila Village, South Leitimur District, Ambon City, is one of the communities that continues to maintain a local wisdom-based water management system. This study aimed to analyze the local wisdom-based water management system, identify the socio-cultural factors influencing its implementation, and evaluate its role in supporting sustainable water resource management. A qualitative approach with a case study design was employed. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 30 respondents, participatory observation, and document analysis, and were subsequently analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that water management in Hukurila is centered on three main practices: traditional wells (ai lounusa), rainwater harvesting, and sasi water. Traditional wells serve not only as a source of domestic water but also as a cultural and spiritual asset that strengthens social cohesion within the community. Rainwater harvesting functions as an adaptive strategy to cope with seasonal variability while reducing dependence on groundwater, whereas sasi water serves as a socio-ecological regulatory mechanism that supports the sustainability of water resources through collectively observed customary rules. The effectiveness of this system is reinforced by the values of pela gandong, pamali, mutual cooperation (gotong royong), the authority of the saniri negeri (customary council), and the active role of women in household water management. This study concludes that local wisdom plays a significant role in promoting sustainable water resource management and provides valuable insights for developing community-based water management policies in coastal and small island regions.

Abstract

Clean water availability is a fundamental issue for coastal communities in Hukurila, South Leitimur, Ambon City, which currently face ecological degradation. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the Wae Pessi Watershed Water Structure through social, technical, and ecological approaches. A qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach was employed, involving observations, document reviews, and in-depth interviews with 30 respondents. Additionally, time-series regression was used to analyze water discharge data from the 2010–2015 period. The results indicate that the Wae Pessi Water Structure significantly increased economic benefits (t-ratio=6.86; p=0.0088) and decreased water-borne diseases (t-ratio=−6.90; p=0.007). Perceived positive impacts include a reduced domestic burden on women and children, improved commodity quality, and supported household production, backed by adequate water discharge (ranging from 1.2–4.1 m3/second). However, water distribution remains unequal between the upstream and downstream areas. The sustainability of this system relies heavily on integrating modern technology with local ecological wisdom

Abstract

Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans Houtt.) is one of the leading spice commodities of Maluku with high economic value. However, its productivity has declined due to the aging of many nutmeg plantations. One effort to improve the availability of high-quality seedlings is through enhancing seed germination success. This study aimed to determine the effect of gibberellin application on the viability and germination of nutmeg seeds grown in cocopeat medium. The research was conducted at the Experimental Garden of the Department of Forestry, Pattimura University, from April to May 2026. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was employed with four gibberellin concentration treatments: 0 ppm (A0), 25 ppm (A1), 50 ppm (A2), and 75 ppm (A3), each replicated three times. Nutmeg seeds were soaked in gibberellin solutions for 3 hours before being sown in cocopeat medium. The observed parameters included germination percentage, germination rate, and Mean Germination Time (MGT). Data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at a 5% significance level. The results showed that gibberellin application had a highly significant effect on all observed parameters. The A2 treatment (50 ppm) was identified as the optimum concentration, resulting in the highest germination percentage (100%), the highest germination rate (1.66), and the lowest MGT value (6.47 days). Therefore, the application of 50 ppm gibberellin in cocopeat medium is recommended to improve seed viability and accelerate the germination of nutmeg seeds.

Abstract

Pombo Island Nature Tourism Park  is a natural tourism destination with great potential for development, but increasing the number of tourist visits in the future has the potential to put pressure on the quality of attractions, accessibility, and supporting tourist facilities. Therefore, an evaluation of tourist perceptions is needed as a basis for sustainable area management. The purpose of this study was to determine tourist perceptions of the 3A components (Attraction, Accessibility, Amenity) in Pombo Island Nature Tourism Park . The research method used Accidental Sampling with a sample of 44 respondents. Tourist perception data were collected using a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire and analyzed descriptively quantitatively, while the results of observations, interviews, and documentations were analyzed descriptively qualitatively. The results showed that tourist perceptions of the 3A components were generally in the good category. The highest score was obtained by the Accessibility component (4.07), followed by Attraction (4.04), while Amenity received the lowest score (3.71). The aspect of beach cleanliness from garbage and the availability of adequate trash bins are the main aspects that need to be improved. The conclusion of this study is that Pombo Island TWA has natural attractions and good accessibility, but requires improvements in supporting facilities and waste management to achieve sustainable tourism management.

Abstract

Malawa Island is a small island that possesses a diversity of plant species with significant potential in maintaining the stability of coastal ecosystems. This study aimed to determine the potential of plant species on Malawa Island, Waesala Village, Huamual Belakang District, West Seram Regency. The research was conducted from March to April 2025 using a descriptive exploratory method through field surveys. Data collection was carried out using systematic transect methods and observation plots measuring 20 × 20 m. Plant observations were conducted based on morphological characteristics, determination keys, and taxonomic literature. The results showed that 66 plant species were found on Malawa Island, consisting of 6 species of Pteridophyta and 60 species of Tracheophyta, with the dominance of the Magnoliopsida class. The ecological conditions of the study area were characterized by high light intensity, average salinity of 33 ppt, average temperature of 34.33°C, humidity of 71%, and sandy coastal substrate. The diversity of species found indicates that the vegetation of Malawa Island is still relatively well preserved and has important potential in maintaining the stability of coastal ecosystems, reducing coastal abrasion, and supporting environmental sustainability.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify forms of local wisdom, analyze the level of socio-cultural resilience of the community, and examine the factors influencing sustainable sago forest management in Ihamahu Village, East Saparua District, Central Maluku Regency. The study employed a descriptive method with a mixed-methods approach. Data were collected through interviews with key informants and questionnaires administered to 30 respondents. Qualitative data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, while quantitative data were analyzed using a Likert scale. The results revealed that the local wisdom practices still maintained by the community include customary rules for sago harvesting (pameri and letu), the role of the traditional institution Kewang, protection of natural sago regeneration, the Masohi tradition, and the transmission of traditional knowledge to younger generations. The level of socio-cultural resilience was categorized as very high, as reflected in the community's ability to preserve cultural values, adapt to technological advancements, and maintain customary institutions and social relationships. Supporting factors for sustainable sago forest management include strong customary laws, the active role of Kewang, the economic value of sago, and intergenerational knowledge transfer. Meanwhile, the main constraints include declining interest among younger generations, reduced mastery of traditional skills, and suboptimal management of sago waste. The findings indicate that local wisdom and socio-cultural resilience play a significant role in supporting the sustainability of sago forest management in Ihamahu Village.

Abstract

Agarwood (Aquilaria filaria) is a high-value non-timber forest product whose resin formation can be induced through inoculation with the fungus Fusarium oxysporum. The success of resin induction is influenced by several factors, including the spacing between inoculation holes. This study aimed to analyze the effect of inoculation hole spacing on resin formation in A. filaria. The research was conducted in Ursana Village, Inamosol District, West Seram Regency, from March to June. A factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was employed with two factors: vertical inoculation spacing (10 cm and 15 cm) and horizontal inoculation spacing (2 cm, 4 cm, and 6 cm). The observed parameters included the degree of infection zone formation, infection zone area, wood tissue color, and agarwood aroma. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Tukey’s Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) test at a 95% confidence level, while qualitative data were analyzed using the Friedman test. The results showed that inoculation hole spacing significantly affected the infection zone area, wood tissue color, and agarwood aroma. The combination of 10 cm vertical spacing and 2 cm horizontal spacing produced the largest infection zone area (25.70 cm²), dark brown wood discoloration, and a clearly detectable characteristic agarwood aroma. This treatment also exhibited the highest degree of infection zone fusion between inoculation holes, reaching 20.68%. These findings indicate that closer inoculation hole spacing, particularly the combination of 10 cm vertical spacing and 2 cm horizontal spacing, is more effective in promoting agarwood resin formation in Aquilaria filaria.
