Abstract

Teak (Tectona grandis L.) is a forestry species of high economic value, yet its generative propagation is often constrained by physical seed dormancy caused by a hard endocarp, resulting in relatively low germination capacity and rate. This study aimed to determine the effect of soaking solution type, soaking duration, and their interaction on the growth of teak seeds. The research was conducted at the Permanent Forestry Nursery of BPDAS Benain-Noelmina, Kupang City, for three months. A two-factor Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was used, comprising solution type (distilled water/M0, HCl/M1, and Atonik/M2) and soaking duration (3 days/N1, 6 days/N2, and 9 days/N3), each replicated three times. Parameters observed were germination capacity, germination rate index, and germination value. Data were analyzed using ANOVA followed by DMRT at the 5% level. The results showed that solution type and soaking duration had a highly significant effect on germination capacity and germination value, while germination rate index was significantly affected by solution type and highly significantly affected by soaking duration. The best combination was Atonik with a 6-day soaking duration (M2N2), producing the highest germination capacity of 80.00%. It is concluded that soaking teak seeds in Atonik solution for 6 days is the most effective treatment for improving teak seed germination.

Abstract

Bullet wood (Mimusops elengi L.) is an ecologically and economically important tree species, yet its generative propagation is often hindered by physical seed dormancy caused by a hard seed coat, resulting in slow germination. This study was conducted to determine the effect of various gibberellin (GA3) concentrations on the germination of bullet wood seeds and to identify the most effective concentration for breaking dormancy. The research was carried out at the Fatukoa Permanent Nursery, Kupang City, using a one-factor Completely Randomized Design consisting of five GA3 concentration levels: control/distilled water (T0), 0.65 g/L (T1), 0.75 g/L (T2), 0.85 g/L (T3), and 0.95 g/L (T4), each replicated three times. The variables observed were germination percentage, germination rate, fresh weight, and dry weight of seedlings, analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Duncan's test at the 5% level. The results showed that GA3 concentration had no significant effect on germination percentage, but had a highly significant effect on germination rate, fresh weight, and dry weight of bullet wood seedlings. Treatment T4 (0.95 g/L) consistently produced the best results across nearly all variables, with the fastest germination rate and the highest fresh weight (5.31 g) and dry weight (0.22 g). Gibberellin acts by activating amylase and protease enzymes that mobilize food reserves for embryo development. It is concluded that soaking bullet wood seeds in a 0.95 g/L GA3 solution is the most effective treatment for supporting the success of generative bullet wood nursery propagation.

Abstract

Saparua Island, one of the small islands in the Lease archipelago (Central Maluku Regency), possesses unique biological natural resources and ecosystems characteristic of small islands within the tropical rainforest ecosystem cluster situated between the Sahul Shelf and the Wallace Line. This study aimed to identify the mammal species present on Saparua Island and determine their distribution. Data collection involved conducting an inventory in areas likely to harbor mammal species. The results indicate that eight mammal species utilize Saparua Island as their habitat: namely the Timor deer (Rusa timorensis moluccensis), spotted cuscus (Spilocuscus maculatus), siha cuscus (Phalanger dendrolagus), palm civet (Paradoxurus hermaproditus), wild boar (Sus scrofa), marsegu (Pteropus ocularis), flying fox (Pteropus argentatus), and wild cattle (Bos sondaicus). These mammal species are distributed relatively evenly across Saparua Island, although species richness is lowest on the southeastern peninsula. Despite being classified as a small island, Saparua Island supports several mammal species that are distributed throughout the entire island.
