Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the growth increment (diameter and height) and identify environmental factors influencing 10-year-old walnut trees (Canarium amboinense) at the Seed Source Plot in Hatusua Village, West Seram. A descriptive quantitative method with field observation techniques was employed across a 1-hectare sample plot (3×3 m spacing) monitoring 100 sample trees. Data were analyzed using Current Annual Increment (CAI), Mean Annual Increment (MAI), and multiple linear regression. Results indicated that at the tenth year, the diameter growth reached a CAI of 2.10 cm/tree/year and an MAI of 2.33 cm/tree/year, while height growth reached a CAI of 1.94 m/tree/year and an MAI of 2.10 m/tree/year. The stand successfully progressed from the seedling stage into a productive tree phase. Among the environmental variables, soil pH and soil moisture were identified as the primary factors significantly influencing the growth of C. amboinense.

Abstract

The Negeri Larike Eel Pond is a nature-based tourist destination whose main attraction is the presence of eels (Anguilla bicolor), which are an integral part of the local community’s traditional knowledge and whose conservation remains a priority to this day. This study aims to identify the ecotourism potential of the Negeri Larike Eel Pond tourist site based on the area’s biophysical conditions particularly the presence of flora and fauna around the site as well as the components of attractions, accessibility, and amenities. The study employs a survey method with a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through field observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Flora and fauna were identified using the iNaturalist app and field guides, and assessed using Fandeli’s (2005) criteria. The results indicate that the Kolam Morea tourist site area possesses potential supporting ecotourism development, with 25 identified flora species falling into the “good” category, including two species of high conservation value, namely Intsia bijuga (NT) and Pterocarpus indicus (EN), while 8 fauna species fall into the “moderate” category, including three protected species: the spotted cuscus, eclectus parrot, and Timor deer. The area’s main attraction is the Morea, classified as Near Threatened (NT-IUCN), weighing approximately 10 kg with a length of 1.5–2 meters, which is protected through the local community’s traditional knowledge and reinforced by a feeding activity that draws visitors. Access to the site is possible by both two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles over a distance of 40.1 km (±1.3 hours) from Ambon City, although public transportation remains limited. Basic amenities such as parking areas, restrooms, changing rooms, a prayer room, gazebos, seating areas, and food stalls are available, though some facilities require improvement, particularly waste disposal facilities. This area has the potential to be developed as an ecotourism destination based on conservation and local wisdom.

Abstract

This study examined the resistance of three local wood types from the Ambon market Salawaku (Albizia chinensis), Makila (Litsea angulata), and Meranti (Shorea sp.) against subterranean termite attack (Coptotermes curvignathus Holmgren), using bioactive papaya leaf extract and Rap-rap chemical preservative. The study employed a Completely Randomized Design in a factorial pattern with three replications. Results showed that Salawaku recorded average weight losses of 101.62 g (papaya leaf extract) and 94.72 g (Rap-rap); Makila recorded 93.74 g and 43.53 g, respectively; and Meranti recorded 93.02 g and 43.53 g, respectively. The lowest average weight-loss percentage was found in Makila treated with Rap-rap (24.24%), while the highest was found in Salawaku treated with papaya leaf extract (58.45%). These findings indicate that wood type and preservative type had no significant effect on the percentage of weight loss caused by subterranean termite attack.

Abstract

Forests play an important role in carbon sequestration and storage through various ecosystem components, including litter and dead wood. This study aimed to estimate the biomass and carbon stocks of litter and dead wood in the Amahusu Music Forest, Nusaniwe District, Ambon City. Data were collected using a stratified purposive sampling method with nine observation plots measuring 20 m × 20 m, representing different canopy density levels, namely dense, moderate, and sparse canopies. Biomass and carbon stock estimations were conducted based on the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) 7724:2019. The results showed that the average litter biomass was 0.23 kg per plot, with an average estimated carbon stock of 0.11 kg per plot or equivalent to 1.10 tons ha⁻¹. The total estimated litter carbon stock in the study area was 5.48 tons. Meanwhile, the total dead wood biomass reached 72.78 kg, with an average of 8.09 kg per plot. The average estimated carbon stock of dead wood was 3.80 kg per plot or equivalent to 0.38 tons ha⁻¹, resulting in a total carbon stock of 1.90 tons. The distribution of biomass and carbon stocks in both components varied among plots, reflecting differences in vegetation characteristics and canopy density. These findings indicate that litter and dead wood are important carbon pools in the Amahusu Music Forest and contribute significantly to the ecological function of forests in climate change mitigation.

Abstract

The study aimed to determine the population structure, natural increase, and factors influencing the natural increase of Bali cattle in West Seram District, West Seram Regency. The study was conducted for two months using survey methods and field observations in seven villages: Piru, Morekao, Lumoli, Kawa, Eti, Neniari, and Kaibobu. Respondents were selected using purposive sampling of farmers raising Bali cattle. Data were collected through structured interviews, observation, documentation, and descriptive analysis. Observed parameters included farmer characteristics, population structure, reproductive management, natural increase, and factors influencing it. The results showed the population structure of Bali cattle based on age: male calf 7.06%, female calf 9.16%, young bull 16.05%, heifer 19.05%, bull 22.22%, and cow 26.46%; based on sex, bulls 45.33% and cows 54.67%. The sex ratio was 43.48% bulls compared to cows 56.52%. The calf crop rate to cow was 61.33%, the calf crop rate to population was 16.23%, and the mortality rate was 2.82%. Natural increase was 13.41%. In conclusion, the population structure of Bali cattle is dominated by cows and adult age groups. Natural increase in Bali cattle is relatively low, while factors influencing natural increase are the proportion of productive adult females, low birth rate, high mortality rate, natural mating system, limited feed quality and availability, and extensive husbandry system.

Abstract

The results showed that the forest stand consisted of five vegetation strata (A, B, C, D, and E), with strata A and B being the dominant canopy layers. Vegetation composition comprised 15 species at the tree stage, 8 species at the pole stage, 9 species at the sapling stage, and 10 species at the seedling stage. Shorea selanica was the dominant species at all growth stages, with relative density values of 66.67% (tree), 2.44% (pole), 67.90% (sapling), and 82.60% (seedling). Relative frequency values were 46.00%, 44.83%, 56.80%, and 44.20%, respectively. Relative dominance reached 74.97% at the tree stage and 49.45% at the pole stage. The highest Importance Value Index (IVI) was also recorded for Shorea selanica, with values of 187.63% (tree), 145.50% (pole), 124.70% (sapling), and 126.80% (seedling).Environmental conditions at the study site showed air temperatures ranging from 21–23°C, soil pH between 6.0 and 7.2, and light intensity ranging from 216 to 453 lux, all of which are within the optimal range for the growth of red meranti. The high values of relative density, dominance, and IVI indicate that Shorea selanica is the principal species forming the forest stand and possesses good natural regeneration capability. The findings of this study are expected to provide scientific information to support sustainable forest management, conservation, and preservation of red meranti forests in South Buru Regency.

Abstract

Natural enemies are a crucial component of Integrated Pest Management (IPM); however, information regarding natural enemy communities in maize agroecosystems in Maluku—specifically on Ambon Island—remains limited. This study aimed to identify the composition and ecological roles of natural enemy communities in maize (*Zea mays* L.) crops in Laha Village, Teluk Ambon District. The research was conducted from October to November 2025 using a descriptive survey method across three observation plots, each measuring 20 × 30 m. Sampling was carried out 12 times using yellow sticky traps, pitfall traps, and sweep nets. Specimens were identified based on morphological characteristics down to the family level, and data were analyzed descriptively based on individual counts and relative abundance. A total of 570 natural enemy individuals were collected, representing three orders and five families: Tachinidae (Diptera), Coccinellidae and Cicindellidae (Coleoptera), and Formicidae and Vespidae (Hymenoptera). Tachinidae was the most abundant family, comprising 312 individuals (54.74%), followed by Coccinellidae (98 individuals; 17.19%), Cicindellidae (65 individuals; 11.40%), Formicidae (58 individuals; 10.18%), and Vespidae (37 individuals; 6.49%). Based on their ecological roles, the community consisted of both parasitoids and predators. These findings provide baseline information on the composition of natural enemy communities in the maize agroecosystem of Laha Village, which could potentially be utilized to develop natural enemy conservation strategies supporting IPM implementation in maize cultivation in Maluku.

Abstract

The mangrove forest in the Teluk Kupang Marine Nature Tourism Park (TWAL), West Oesapa Village, is a coastal ecosystem exposed to considerable pressure from surrounding community activities, making a health status assessment essential for sustainable management. This study aims to assess the health status of the mangrove forest using the Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) method, covering three indicators: vitality (tree damage), productivity (basal area/LBDS), and biodiversity (species richness, diversity, and evenness). Observations were conducted across 17 cluster plots representing 17.58 ha of mangrove area. The results show that the vitality indicator for all clusters falls into the healthy category, with an average damage index of 0.0859. The productivity indicator shows varying basal area values among clusters, tending to increase with stand age. The biodiversity indicator shows that the Margalef richness index and Shannon-Wiener diversity index are low across all growth strata, while the Pielou evenness index is moderate. Overall, the health status of the TWAL Teluk Kupang mangrove forest is categorized as healthy in terms of vitality, although greater attention to species diversity is required to sustain its ecological function.
