Abstract

Tanean Lanjhang is a traditional communal space of the Madurese community that embodies social, cultural, and kinship values through its distinctive spatial configuration. This study aims to understand how the spatial arrangement of Tanean Lanjhang supports social interaction and preserves cultural identity using a Space Syntax analysis approach. The research method integrates field surveys, spatial mapping with GIS, syntactic analysis using DepthmapX, and qualitative interviews with local communities. The findings reveal that the central open space of Tanean Lanjhang exhibits high levels of integration and connectivity, serving as a hub for communal activities and reinforcing social cohesion. Meanwhile, private areas surrounding the courtyard show high control values, reflecting the social hierarchy within the extended Madurese family. The study also explores how adaptation to modernization alters spatial configurations while retaining core cultural values. These findings emphasize the importance of incorporating local wisdom into contemporary spatial planning and expand the application of Space Syntax to the study of traditional cultures.

Abstract

Sumber Jenon Natural Tourism Area is a nature-based tourist destination located in Gunungronggo Village, Tajinan District, Malang Regency. The site is renowned for its clear spring water, lush natural atmosphere, and preserved local cultural values, making it an attractive destination for visitors. However, the increase in tourist numbers has not been accompanied by optimal site management, particularly in terms of environmental comfort. Based on field observations and visitor perceptions, several issues were identified, such as the lack of supporting facilities, narrow circulation pathways, and less aesthetically pleasing spatial elements. This study aims to evaluate visitor comfort based on seven physical parameters: thermal comfort, aroma, safety, circulation, cleanliness, aesthetics, and spatial form. The research employed a descriptive quantitative approach through surveys using questionnaires and a rating scale analysis. The results indicate that thermal comfort received the highest score at 77%, followed by aroma at 75%, and safety at 74%. The lowest score was recorded for spatial form at 70%. These findings suggest that while overall comfort is considered good, improvements are still needed, particularly in landscape aesthetics and open space design. This study recommends enhancements in spatial planning, upgrading supporting facilities, and implementing sustainable environmental management to optimize the overall visitor experience.

Abstract

This study explores the planning of a waterfront area along the Mahakam River, focusing on the Sungai Kunjang Dock in Samarinda City. The Mahakam River plays a vital role as a transportation route and economic artery for the surrounding community. However, the infrastructure of the river port—particularly the dock—remains suboptimal in terms of functionality, aesthetics, and public comfort. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, supported by field observation, literature review, documentation, and SWOT analysis. The findings reveal that the port area holds significant potential to be developed as a multifunctional public space through a waterfront development approach. The proposed design applies principles of ecological and social integration by incorporating green open spaces, indoor gardens, children’s playgrounds, exhibition spaces, and supporting facilities. The design concept, named “SENARA,” emphasizes the harmonious relationship between humans and the river as a core urban identity. This redevelopment is expected to enhance the environmental quality of the waterfront while strengthening the port’s social, economic, and tourism functions in a sustainable manner.

Abstract

Developing a waterfront area requires careful planning, considering local potential, site characteristics, and community needs. This study aims to redesign Taman Tepian Slamet Riyadi in Samarinda into a tourism destination based on water recreation while promoting local cultural identity. The core concept includes the development of a boat dock for rowing boat activities, green open spaces, playgrounds, an amphitheater, a venue, and a riverside restaurant. A key feature of the site is the Jukung Barunai monument, which symbolizes the cultural heritage of river life. The Jukut restaurant offers local cuisine in a natural riverside setting. Planning methods involved on-site observation, SWOT analysis, and spatial zoning approaches. The result is an integrated design that balances aesthetics, environmental sustainability, and social interaction. In addition to supporting tourism activities, this project is expected to open new economic opportunities and raise public awareness of the importance of preserving the Mahakam River ecosystem.

Abstract

Public buildings designed as cultural spaces should not only function as symbols of local identity, but also as active and center of cultural activity. This research examines the phenomenon of deviation in the function of space in the building of the Samarinda City Culture and Tourism Office, then analyzes the phenomenon of deviation in function with an approach that focuses on lived experience and perception of the meaning of space. This study founds that there is a lot of space utilization that is not in accordance with its function, reducing the meaning of public architecture as part of a place to interact. The analysis also shows that spaces used for non-cultural activities such as weddings and school events do not represent the cultural emphasis of East Kalimantan. In addition, weak management, the absence of strict space utilization policies, and low community participation confirm that cultural spaces are not sufficiently supported by symbolic design, but must be balanced with consistent and participatory governance. The recommendations are given in the form of revitalization of cultural programs, improving the management system, and optimizing physical design to support the flexibility and sustainability of cultural activities

Abstract

The Gelora Kadrie Oening (GOR Sempaja) area in Samarinda is a public space with a density of sports activities, performances, and social interactions. However, in the dynamics of the space, there is a disconnection of spatial relations between users, managers, and spatial elements such as Aji Muhammad Salehuddin II Hospital, access patterns from the main door, and post-sports consumption spaces. This research uses the Actor-Network Theory (ANT) approach to understand the connectedness and disconnectedness of human and non-human actors in the spatial structure of the area. Three main phenomena were identified: the unrecognized presence of RSUD, the shift of access from the front gate to the side lane, and the post-physical activity snacking pattern. All three were analyzed within the framework of architectural theory; sense of place, comfort theory, and spatial recognition. The findings indicate a rift in the system of perception, orientation, and spatial meaning, which hinders the overall integration of the area.
