Abstract

1. This part deals with the generic names proposed for Hymenolichenes, a very limited group of Hymenomycetes. 2. In connection with Herpothallon Tobl. attention is drawn to Hypochnus Fr. ex Ehrenb. (non Fr. ex Fr.), which seems to be the correct name for the genus.

Abstract

Traditionally, morphological parameters have been used for several taxonomic and ecological identifications. The morphological characteristics alone would be difficult to distinguish the evidence for species identification. Hence, a study of leaf anatomy was conducted to compare the structural characteristics which focused on the epidermal cells, stomata, and trichomes by using a Compound Microscope and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Four selected species of Hoya from various localities within western of Sarawak were studied: H. caudata, H. coronaria, H. omlorii, and H. verticillata. The results showed stomatal types of Hoya species have stephanocytic stomata, except for two species which have slightly significant differences: H. coronaria has anomocytic stomata and H. omlorii has paracytic stomata. Meanwhile, in terms of the stomatal presence, all species possessed hypostomatic stomata, only H. verticillata has amphistomatic stomata which stomata presence on both sides of the adaxial and abaxial surfaces. Highest stomatal density was recorded in H. omlorii whereas the lowest were recorded in H. coronaria. Stomatal index were calculated and H. caudata has the highest with 12.80% and H. coronaria has the lowest value which is 6.28%. All four species were completely absence of trichomes except for H. coronaria which has simple unicellular non-glandular trichomes. The result indicates that the anatomical characteristics provide additional information and could be a great assist in the distinction within Hoya species.

Abstract

The Calamus javensis (Arecaceae: Calamoideae) complex in historical biogeographic context.  Reinwardtia  20(1): 1−7. — Calamus javensis  is a very polymorphic species with a number of recognisable forms (of which several were once even recognized at species level). A historical biogeographic analysis showed no historical distribution pattern in the diversification of these various forms. The forms are very likely the result  of  adaptation  to  local  circumstances,  whereby more or less identical  forms  can  develop  under similar niche circumstances  in  disjunct areas,  exceptions  are  the  ‘acuminatus-polyphyllus’ form and C.  tenompokensis  that are recognisable and present in a non-disjunct area.

Abstract

Daemonorops mogeana Rustiami and Daemonorops takanensis Rustiami are described and illustrated for the first time based on specimens collected from Central Sulawesi and South Sulawesi respectively. An identification key of Daemonorops in Sulawesi is constructed in order to differentiate between those two species and other species of Daemonorops in Sulawesi.

Nine species of Freycinetia are enumerated for Jambi, Sumatra, Indonesia: F. angustifolia Blume, F. berbakensis Widjaja, Pasaribu & Hidayat, F. imbricata Blume, F. javanica Blume, F. kamiana B.C. Stone, F. rigidifolia Hemsl., F. sumatrana Hemsl., F. winkleriana Martelli and F. scabrosa Pasaribu & Widjaja,. The latest species is newly described. A key to the nine species in Jambi is provided.

Abstract

VELDKAMP, J. F. 2018. A revision of Isachne in Malesia 2: Sect. Albentes (Gramineae, Isachneae). Reinwardtia 17 (1): 1–33. — There are 23 species of Isachne in Malesia of which the 16 belonging to sect. Albentes are revised here. Isachne fera (N. Sumatra) and I. glandulosa (W. Sumatra) are new species, and so is I. bsipiana from Vanuatu. Isachne clementis and I. vulcanica are distinct species. Isachne albomarginata and I. beneckei are reduced to I. clarkei, I. obtecta to I. stricta, I. repens to I. commelinifolia (which is reinstated here), I. saxicola to I. clementis. Isachne kunthiana restricted to Sri Lanka and S. India has been much misapplied to specimens of I.commelinifolia and I. schmidtii. Fifteen lectotypes are designated.

Abstract

Local communities have their own means of maintaining their traditional know-ledge and sustaining the production system of natural resources by designating the resources as sacred. Without the state's influence, local people have their own strategies to conserve the environment and resources, in ways which are more effective than those enforced by the state. A study done through interview, participatory observation, and ethnographic methods revealed that local people recognized two models of natural resources conservation. The first model is the designation of forests as sacred site, aiming at maintaining the sustainability of ecosystem and the second model refers to adoption of species as a sacred entity to sustain production system. Dynamic processes are operating in the sacredness of both forest and species.

In connexion with Backer's "Beknopte Flora van Java," a revised key to, and short descriptions of, the species of Baccaurea Lour.(Euphorbiaceae) are given; the name Lannea coromandelica (Houtt.) Merr. is accepted; and three new species of Labiatae are validly published and described, viz., Pogostemon javanicus Backer ex Adelb., P. hortensis Backer ex Adelb.,and Plectranthus petraeus Backer ex Adelb.
