Abstract

ATRIA, M. & VAN WELZEN, P. C. 2021. The Calamus javensis (Arecaceae: Calamoideae) complex in historical biogeographic context.  Reinwardtia  20(1): 1−7. — Calamus javensis  is a very polymorphic species with a number of recognisable forms (of which several were once even recognized at species level). A historical biogeographic analysis showed no historical distribution pattern in the diversification of these various forms. The forms are very likely the result  of  adaptation  to  local  circumstances,  whereby more or less identical  forms  can  develop  under similar niche circumstances  in  disjunct areas,  exceptions  are  the  ‘acuminatus-polyphyllus’ form and C.  tenompokensis  that are recognisable and present in a non-disjunct area.

Abstract

Bryophytes are nonvascular plants that have simple structures that are sensitive to environmental changes, and they can, therefore be used as indicators of air quality. The presence of bryophytes in disturbed urban ecosystems, such as residential and industrial areas, indicates that their structures have adapted to survive in such areas. The objective of this study was to compare the bryophyte diversity and air quality indices between a residential area and an industrial area in Jakarta. The research was conducted in the Bona Indah residential area in South Jakarta and the Jakarta Industrial Estate Pulogadung (JEIP) urban forest. Sampling was carried out using the transect method in the residential area and the quadratic method in the urban forest on three different substrates, namely rocks or concrete, soil and tree trunks. The percentage of the epiphytic bryophyte cover was measured using a 10 × 10 cm subplot. Voucher specimens were stored at the Herbarium UI DEP and Herbarium IPB. Twenty-one species of moss and three species of liverwort were found in the two locations. Bryophytes were found on all the substrates in the residential area, but in the urban forest, they were found only on tree trunks and rock/cement substrates. Based on the Shannon–Wiener Index, although both locations had moderate bryophyte diversity, the residential area’s bryophyte diversity was higher than that of the urban forest. The index of atmospheric purity in the residential area was 4.3, indicating a high level of pollution, and it was 0.3 in the urban forest, showing that it was also very polluted.

Abstract

Plukenetia volubilis L. has been documented as a new record for the first time in Java, Indonesia. The species is easily distinguished from the native species, P. corniculata Sm., by its exstipellate basilaminar-glands, long cylindrical column, and wingless fruit-lobes. Plukenetia volubilis is cultivated mainly in South America for its beneficial values as food and medicine and was recently introduced to Asia. However, its occurrence in Java has not been reported. We collected specimens from West Java (Depok City, Bandung Barat and Sumedang Regency) and East Java (Malang Regency). Morphological description, identification key, and photographs of the species are provided.

Abstract

AbstractThe herbarium harbors collections of preserved plants used for scientific purposes. It is important to keep information about plants in a valid herbarium collection. This study aims to establish a valid collection and database of Pyrrosia stored in Herbarium Depokensis (UIDEP) through herbarium management. The management process includes taxonomic validation, specimen revitalization, and digitization. Taxonomic validation results showed there were 3 species of Pyrrosia namely P. piloselloides, P. lanceolata, and P. longifolia. These three species can be distinguished by rhizome scales, the shape of the lamina, and soral position. Physical examination throughout specimens showed several problems including loose specimen parts and specimen damage due to insects. Almost all collections (49 out of 59 specimens) did not include fertile lamina which is an important identifying character in Pyrrosia. To complete the herbarium data, 10 new Pyrrosia samples were collected at Green Spaces (RTHK) in Universitas Indonesia. All valid data and pictures undergo a digitization process. Those digitized data were then uploaded to the Herbarium UIDEP website (ruangkoleksibiotaui.id). This resulted in a Pyrrosia database that can be widely accessed by the public.
