Abstract

This study explores the consecutive interpreting strategies used in President Joko Widodo's speech at the ASEAN Business and Investment Forum, focusing on how these strategies contribute to enhancing the effectiveness of cross-cultural diplomatic communication. This research provides valuable insights into professional interpreting practices and contributes significantly to the development of interpreting studies, particularly in the field of diplomacy and international communication. The main focus of the research is on three strategies: modulation, transposition, and amplification. Using a descriptive qualitative approach and data from YouTube, this study identifies and analyzes the interpreter strategies applied in the interpretation of messages from Indonesian to English. The results show that successful consecutive interpreting depends not only on linguistic ability but also on a deep understanding of the cultural and political context, as well as the ability to manage diplomatic nuances. This research provides valuable insights into professional interpreting practices at high governmental levels and is expected to contribute significantly to the field of interpreting studies, especially in the context of diplomacy and international communication.

Abstract

This study analyzes simultaneous translation strategies in Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s interview on Axios HBO from English to Indonesian. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study identifies various strategies applied by the interpreter, including paraphrasing, transposition, explication, adaptation, and modulation. Data collection methods include literature study, note-taking, reading, and observation, while data analysis utilizes Gile’s Simultaneous Interpretation theory and Kopczynski’s strategies. The results show that the success of simultaneous translation depends not only on linguistic ability but also on the understanding of technology and contemporary social issues, as well as the ability to manage technical terms and political nuances. This research contributes to the field of simultaneous translation studies in the context of technology and media. This research provides insights into practical approaches for interpreters in media settings, with broader implications for simultaneous interpretation in technology-related contexts.

Abstract

This research was initially prompted by the language used in Instagram to address mental issues in America. American society tends to express the psychological or mental states and experiences on social media, particularly Instagram. Hence, dealing with psychological expressions, this research deployed the analysis of expressive speech acts aimed at identifying the types of expressive speech acts and how they were delivered in communication -strategies. The data were taken from @gemmacorrell’s selected comment section. The analysis resulted in the finding of 7 out of 12 types of expressive speech acts utilization with the most usage order was compliment (39), lament (11), thank (7), congratulate (1), deplore (1), protest (1), and welcome (1). Further, most utterances denoted explicit, direct, and literal strategies without covering implied meanings. Regarding social dimensions, this research found that American society tended to share their problems with unknown virtual relatives, as it can be a signal that ‘real’ humanity is declining to be replaced by ‘virtual’ humanity. It is such an irony because in real life, people seem not to care about each other but in digital reality, they support each other. Hence, the researchers motivate scholars worldwide to initiate advanced studies on the phenomenon of language, social media, digital society, and mental health issues.

Abstract

This study is a qualitative descriptive study that aims to analyze the types of modality metaphors and their translation techniques in argumentative texts written by students of the Midwifery Undergraduate Program. This study uses the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) approach, and the data is analyzed using the content analysis method to identify the types of modality metaphors and the translation techniques used. The results of the study indicate that the most dominant type of modality metaphor is probability modalization, while bond modulation is not found. The three translation techniques applied are common equivalents (96 times), modulation (3 times), and linguistic amplification (1 time). In terms of translation quality, the aspects of accuracy, acceptability, and readability reached an average of 83%, with an overall average value of 2.03.

Abstract

This study examines the scarcity of indigenous language literacy in Merauke and the pressing threat of local language extinction. Utilizing a qualitative approach and case study method, the research identifies primary factors influencing the decline in the use of local languages, including the dominance of the Indonesian language, lack of documentation and teaching materials in native languages, and limited educational policy support for language preservation. Furthermore, globalization and modernization have driven younger generations to prioritize languages perceived as more economically and socially valuable. The findings reveal that without sustained revitalization efforts, local languages in Merauke face an increased risk of extinction. Recommendations include developing language documentation programs, integrating local languages into school curricula, and fostering community awareness and pride in native languages. This research aims to serve as a foundation for more effective language preservation strategies in Merauke.

Abstract

Abstract This study examines the impact of genre-based instruction on the writing skills of vocational high school students, specifically focusing on paragraph organization, coherence, relevance, and vocabulary acquisition. A quasi-experimental design with pretest-posttest measures was employed, involving 60 students divided into an experimental group, which received genre-focused instruction, and a control group, which followed traditional writing instruction. The genre-based approach was tailored to the students' technical fields, emphasizing structured paragraph development, use of cohesive devices, topic relevance, and application of field-specific vocabulary. The results showed significant improvements in the experimental group across all four writing components, with mean posttest scores rising substantially compared to the control group. The experimental group’s standard deviations also decreased, indicating greater consistency in their writing performance. Paired t-tests confirmed that genre-based instruction led to statistically significant gains in organization, coherence, relevance, and vocabulary acquisition (p < 0.001). In contrast, the control group demonstrated minimal improvement. These findings support genre theory, suggesting that explicit genre instruction enhances both the quality and reliability of students’ writing. This study underscores the importance of integrating genre-based strategies into vocational curricula, as it equips students with the technical and professional writing skills needed for their careers. Future research could further explore the long-term effects of genre-based instruction across various vocational disciplines.
