Abstract

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is an important instrument in ensuring that all development activities are carried out sustainably without neglecting environmental protection aspects. This study aims to examine the development of the concept, regulations, and role of EIA in environmental management through a literature review approach. Various scientific sources were used to explore how AMDAL has developed since the enactment of the initial provisions on environmental management to the latest regulations that strengthen AMDAL's position as an instrument for environmental licensing and supervision. The results of the study show that AMDAL has a strategic role in identifying potential negative impacts, formulating mitigation measures, and ensuring the integration of development policies and environmental sustainability. In addition, regulatory changes over time indicate an increase in the government's commitment to environmental protection through the improvement of the AMDAL mechanism. Thus, AMDAL has become an instrument that is not only normative but also operational in realizing environmentally conscious and sustainable development.

Abstract

Occupational Safety and Health (OHS) is an important component in the operational activities of the plantation and agricultural processing industries because every operational activity has potential risks that require appropriate control. The purpose of this study is to examine the implementation of OHS at PT. Perkebunan Nusantara I Regional 7 Kebun Pagar Alam, South Sumatra in order to obtain an overview of the implementation of the OHS system implemented by the company and to understand the efforts made in creating a safe and structured work environment. Data collection methods were carried out through direct observation in the plantation and factory areas, interviews with workers and management, and review of documents related to OHS policies. The results of the study indicate that the company has implemented an OHS system, such as the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), provision of safety facilities, SOPs, an adequate work environment, and regular training for employees. However, there is still non-compliance by some workers in the use of PPE so that supervision and strengthening of the OHS culture are needed.

Abstract

Urban slum settlements that have developed along riverbanks face complex challenges related to waste management, which directly affect environmental quality and public health. Limited infrastructure, inadequate waste collection services, and community behaviors that do not yet support sustainable waste management are the main factors contributing to increased river pollution in these areas. This study aims to comprehensively examine the concepts, challenges, and strategies of waste management in urban riverbank slum settlements based on findings from previous studies. The method employed is a literature review, involving the analysis of relevant scientific articles, policy reports, and official documents at both national and international levels. The results indicate that waste management problems in riverbank areas are generally influenced by unequal access to waste services, weak policy enforcement, and limited community participation. Strategies commonly recommended in the literature include strengthening community-based waste management systems, improving infrastructure and waste services, integrating slum upgrading policies, and promoting sustainable environmental education. This review is expected to serve as a conceptual reference for policymaking and planning more effective and sustainable waste management in urban riverbank slum areas.

Abstract

Industrial activities have the potential to produce solid, liquid, and gaseous waste from production processes and supporting activities. This condition also occurs at PT Pertamina Patra Niaga Fuel Terminal Baturaja, South Sumatra Province, as a fuel distribution company. The domestic wastewater produced has physical, chemical, and biological characteristics including pH, temperature, color, BOD, COD, TSS, oil and grease, and E-coli and coliform bacteria. Efforts made to minimize environmental impacts, the company implemented a study on domestic liquid waste management, especially greywater, through a treatment process and reuse as closed toilet rinse water. Wastewater treatment is carried out using a biofilter Wastewater Treatment Plant with a combination of anaerobic and aerobic processes. This study aims to assess the quality of wastewater in the inlet and outlet ponds of the WWTP. The research method uses primary and secondary data collection. The results of the analysis indicate that the quality of the processed wastewater has met the quality standards according to the Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry Number P.68/MENLHK/Setjen/Kum.1/8/2016.

Abstract

The use of natural ingredients as components in eco-friendly cleaning products is an important alternative for reducing the impact of synthetic surfactants on human health and aquatic environments. This study aims to analyze the effect of adding pedada mangrove fruit extract (Sonneratia caseolaris) on the physicochemical characteristics of dishwashing soap as an eco-friendly cleaning agent. Extraction was performed using the maceration method with 96% ethanol, and the extract was formulated into liquid dish soap at varying concentrations of 0%, 10%, 15%, and 20%. The testing included phytochemical screening, viscosity, pH, homogeneity, organoleptic evaluation, and foam stability. The results of the phytochemical screening indicated the presence of flavonoids, tannins, and saponins, which have potential as natural antimicrobial agents. The addition of the extract caused a decrease in viscosity from 3550.21 cP to 932.95 cP as the extract concentration increased; however, all formulations still met the SNI 4075-2:2017 standard. The pH ranged from 6.06 to 6.44, which is considered safe for household use and relatively compatible with the skin’s physiological balance. Foam stability increased from 81.82% to 92.59% due to the presence of saponins, which act as natural surfactants. All formulations exhibited good homogeneity without phase separation. The formulation with a 15% extract concentration produced the most optimal and stable physical characteristics. This study indicates that pedada fruit extract has the potential to be developed as a coastal bio-based cleaning biomaterial that supports the concepts of green technology, environmental health, and the sustainability of aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract

Forests are a vital natural resource for human life, nature, and the environment. The Air Telang Protected Forest has unique water and soil characteristics, given that it is a coastal area affected by tidal conditions. The purpose of this study was to analyze the chemical and physical characteristics of water and soil in the Air Telang Protected Forest, Banyuasin, South Sumatra. The parameters used in the water samples were temperature, electrical conductivity (Electrical Conductivity), pH, and salinity. The parameters used in the soil samples were pH, Electrification Capacity (Electrical Conductivity), salinity, and soil water content. The research method used a survey. The results showed that water conditions in the Air Telang Protected Forest varied between stations. The pH tended to be normal, with the highest Electrification Capacity (DHL) at Station 2, and the highest salinity at Station 3. Furthermore, the water temperature gradually increased. The analysis of the chemical and physical parameters of the soil in the Air Telang Protected Forest revealed that Station 2 had the most striking characteristics of the two stations, with low pH, Electrification Capacity (DHL), salinity, and soil water content.

Abstract

Waste problems in urban slum settlements located along riverbanks have become one of the main causes of river environmental degradation. High population density, poor sanitation conditions, limited waste management facilities, and low public awareness of environmental cleanliness have contributed to increasing river water pollution and the decline of urban ecosystem quality. This study aims to analyze the relationship between waste problems and river environmental degradation in urban slum areas through a literature review approach. The research method was conducted by reviewing various scientific journals, books, research reports, and policy documents related to waste management, river pollution, slum settlements, and urban environments. The findings indicate that the direct disposal of domestic waste into rivers remains a common practice in slum settlements due to inadequate waste management services and the socio-economic conditions of the community. These conditions have resulted in declining water quality, sedimentation, river flow blockages, increased flood risks, and the emergence of various environmental-based diseases. In addition, weak supervision and poor implementation of environmental policies have further exacerbated river degradation in urban areas. This study emphasizes that addressing waste problems in urban slum settlements requires a comprehensive approach through improving waste management infrastructure, environmental education, community empowerment, and strengthening policies and collaboration among stakeholders to support the sustainability of urban river environments.
