Abstract

Pandemic covid-19 or corona virus disease forced many schools in Indonesia to apply online learning. The purpose of the study was to describe the problems in teaching reading comprehension before and during pandemic covid-19. The method of this research was descriptive qualitative research. The subject of the research was the English teacher of eleventh grades and the students of XI-C in SMK Wijaya Kusuma Surakarta. The data were collected through questionnaires and interview. The questionnaires were given to English teacher and the students of XI-C SMK Wijaya Kusuma Surakarta. The data were analyzed used qualitative data analysis. The data were analyzed through the process of 1) data reduction, 2) data display, 3) data collection, 4) conclusion drawing/verification. Interestingly, the study found that the problems of teaching reading comprehension before pandemic covid-19 were: 1) the students had difficulty to finding main idea and detail information, 2) the students had difficulty to comprehend sentence in teaching reading comprehension, 3) the students get nervous and less motivation when reading English text, 4) the different ability of students. While, during pandemic covid- 19 the problems in teaching reading comprehension were: 1) internet connection and signal, 2) limited internet quota, 3) slow responds, 4) prefer face to face learning. The study recommends that other researcher to development kinds of media online learning to implement effective teaching and learning process.   Keywords: Reading Comprehension, Teaching Reading, Online Learning

Abstract

Nowadays, English is the only language that links the whole world and must be learned. In learning English, there were 4 language skills. One of which was reading. Enriching reading would improve student comprehension to communicate through speaking, listening, and writing. The purposes of the study were to describe the problems faced by the teacher and the solutions in teaching and learning process, and also the use of KWL Method in teaching and learning process of reading comprehension. The subject of the research were the teacher and first grade students of SMP N 27 Surakarta in 2020/2021 Academic Year in class A. The data collected by direct observation, and it could be words, interview, and documentation. The data would be described by used qualitative data analysis method. The theoretical basis used teaching and learning reading comprehension. The result showed the teacher chose the KWL because it was good for assessing the development students’ reading skills. However, from KWL method, 60% students were sleepy and did not pay attention, and 40% understood. This problem came because the class management and the different of student capability. The conclusion of this study showed KWL Methods would run well if the teacher could manage class by classify which one had good capability to easily understand and which one did not and had distraction when learning process went. the teacher had to pay more attention about how to increase the curiosity and interest of students for want to learn more about grammar and vocabulary.   Keywords: Learning Teaching Method, KWL, English, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

This research was aimed at :(1) the application of using WhatsApp in teaching reading skill at the Seventh Grade students SMP N 18 Surakarta in the academic year 2019/2020 (2) the students problems faced by the student in teaching reading skill at the seventh grade students of SMP N 18 Surakarta in the Academic year 2019/2020. This research was conducted fromJuly to August2020. The researcher took 29 students of SMP N 18 Surakarta as the sample.A descriptive qualitative research was used in this study. The subject of thisresearch was the seventh grade students’of SMP N 18 Surakarta the 2019/2020 academic year. To collect the data, the researcher used questionnaire, link sent by WhatsApp Group. Interview with the teacher face-to-face, interview with the teacher by using WhatsApp Video Call .To validity data, the researcher used data triangulation. The result of the research show that: 1)The main problems of learning English was lack of student motivations. Insufficient time also was the problems in learning English. 2) The internet connection can influenced online learning process. 3) Students and teacher discussion usedWhatsApp, work in pairs in online learning. 4) Students submitted the assignment by sent files through WhatsApp. 4) There were problems in online learning such as internet connection, internet quota, student’s slow in response and parents guidance. 5) The teacher used features picture, video, document to clarify the material.   Keywords :WhatsApp, Online Learning, Descriptive Qualitative Research

Abstract

The aims of this research are to find out: (1) the activities carried out towards the use of Google Classroom at the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Colomadu in academic year 2020/2021, (2) the students perceive the application and the level of students’ perception towards the use of Google Classroom at the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Colomadu in academic year 2020/2021, (3) the students’ respond towards the use of Google Classroom in teaching reading at the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Colomadu in academic year 2020/2021. A descriptive qualitative research method is applied in this research. The sources of the data were an English teacher and the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Colomadu 2020/2021 academic year which is consists of 30 students. The technique of collecting data used by the researcher were an interview with the teacher and a questionnaires that distributed in Google form via link sent by WhatsApp. Meanwhile to analyze the data, the researcher used a qualitative data analysis and likert scale. The results of this research shows that the students gave a positive responses towards the use Google Classroom in teaching reading. It can be proofed by (1) most of the students were utilizing the Google Classroom well, they felt comfortable and enjoy with the Google Classroom learning style and they became interested when the Google Classroom applied in the teaching process. (2) the students perceive usefulness from the use of Google Classroom in teaching and learning process. (3) the high Google Classroom’s usage level and many students are helped by Google Classroom in their reading mastery level. It can be concluded that the use of Google Classroom have a positive impact to the student’s reading ability at the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Colomadu in 2020/2021 academic year.   Keywords: Perception, Google Classroom, Teaching Reading, Online Learning

Abstract

This research was entitled “The analysis on Students Errors in using Simple Present Tense at SMP N 3 Karanganyar”. The objectives of this research were to identify type of error and the dominant error made by students in using Simple Present Tense at SMP N 3 Karanganyar. This research was a qualitative research with the type of error analysis. There were 21 students involved in this research from class VIII A of SMP N 3 Karanganyar. To collect the data the researcher held a writing test of Descriptive Text in order to get the data from the students. After collecting the data, the researcher analyzed the data using data collection, data reduction, data display and drawing conclusion. The result of this research showed that there were several errors that students made in using simple present tense. There are classified into omission, addition, misformation, misordering. The errors of omission was 14 errors. The errors of Addition was 3 erros. The error that frequently made by students was misformation which was done for 43 errors. Abstract

The objectives of the research were: (1) to find out the types of errors that occursed on the use of Simple Past Tense in English Narrative Text written by the Eleventh Grade Students of SMK Kristen 1 Surakarta in Marketing Business Class in 2019/2020 Academic Year, and (2) to find out the cause of errors on the use of Simple Past Tense in English Narrative Text written by the Eleventh Grade Students of SMK Kristen 1 Surakarta in Marketing Business Class in 2019/2020 Academic Year. Error analysis is a method used to document the errors that appear in learner language, determine whether those errors are systematic, and explain what caused them. The method of this research was a qualitative research. In this study the researcher observed and analyzed the data. The researcher analyzed the data, data collecting methods and its instruments that applied by the researcher in this research were Interview, Observation, and Documentation. The results of this study showed that type of errors which made by the students in a story entitled ‘Malin Kundang’ was Omission, with total percentage was 15%, Addition with total percentage was 10%, Misinformation with total percentage was 62%, and Misordering with total percentage was 14%. In a story entitled ‘The White Snake’ is Omission with total percentage was 13%, Addition with total percentage was 4%, Misinformation with total percentage was 52%, and Misordering with total percentage was 30%. In a story entitled ‘The White Lady’ is Omission with total percentage was 9%, Addition with total percentage was 4%, Misinformation with total percentage was 74%, and Misordering with total percentage was 13%. The results of the research showed that after conducting the test to writing of Simple Past Tense in Narrative Text, it was found that most students (62% in a story entitled ‘Malin Kundang’, 52% in a story ‘The White Snake’ and 74% in a story entitled ‘The White Lady’) made errors in the misinformation. It was happened because students did not know about changing of verb 1 to verb 2 and this happens because some students were still confused about the used of the Simple Past Tense in Narrative Text.   Keywords: Error Analysis, Simple Past Tense, Narrative Text, and Marketing Business

Abstract

This research was aimed at described the students perspective toward the use of WhatsApp application in online learning class especially at teaching writing in the VIII B class students of SMP N 2 Kradenan in 2019/2020 Academic Year. This research was used a Descriptive Qualitative Research as a method. The research was the VIII-B students of SMP N 2 Keradenan in 2019/2020 academic year. In collecting the data, the researcher used two method, that can be mention as interview, questionnaire. To analysis the data, the researcher used qualitative data analysis and likert scale. The qualitative data analysis method that was used proposed about the aim of this method were to get information about existing conditions and have been already used in educational research, to describe what is exist with respect to variable or condition in some situation we can use qualitative method. The results of the research show that WhatsApp application can improve the students’ writing skill. The students get interest when the teacher used WhatsApp application as a media at their online learning. It can be proofed by the percentage used likert scale with the topic: the students feel interest with the media (86.67%), writing skill is increase while using WhatsApp application (60.00%). It can be conclude that through WhatsApp application the students gather their interest in learning writing English and they can improve their writing skill.   Keywords: Descriptive Qualitative, Writing Skill, Online Learning, WhatsApp Application

Abstract

This research is conducted to fulfill the following aims: 1) to describe a cooperative learning method namely Numbered Heads Together, 2) the effectiveness of Numbered Heads Together to improve student learning outcomes in the seventh grade students of SMP Islam Al - Hadi Sukoharjo in 2020/2021 Academic Year. This research was conducted by applying Collaborative Action Research. The procedure of this research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consists of two sessions. The procedure of action research is conducted in 4 steps namely planning, action, observation and reflection. There are two kinds of data namely non test, which consists of observation, interview, documentation and photograph; and test which conducted by giving a pre-test before the research begins and post-test at the conclusion of the research. The quantitative data was analyzed by using SPSS 23 Statistic Software to calculate the nonindependent t-test. The qualitative data analysis consists of three concurrent flows of activity: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The research shows the improvement of mean score from pre-test which is 57.41, to 67.05 on post-test 1 and finally 76.82 on post-test 2. Therefore, it can be concluded that: 1) Numbered Heads Together as a cooperative learning model is a learning strategy which emphasized student’s individual accountability, 2) Numbered Heads Together is effective in improving student learning outcomes in vocabulary.   Key words: Numbered Heads Together, Vocabulary Mastery, Classroom Action Research.

Abstract

The implementation of online learning becomes popular all around the world during the Covid-19 pandemic. In Indonesia, the changing of synchronous learning to asynchronous learning is somewhat new. As a result, the researchers think it is needed to learn about the students' perceptions of online learning with MS Teams in learning to write. The goals of this study were to find out the activities done by the students in using MS Teams, students’ perception toward the use of MS Teams, and the utilization of MS Teams in class. The research used descriptive qualitative research. The eighth-grade students at SMP N 7 Purwodadi were the participant in the study. The data collection used in this study was interviews and questionnaires. Four steps of data analysis namely data collection, data reduction, data display, and data verification were used in the study. The result showed that the students utilized MS Teams to send assignments and discuss with the teacher related to learning writing. The students' perceptions toward the use of MS Teams in learning writing were MS Teams allows students to study anywhere and anytime, MS Teams allows students to practice writing English, and MS Teams helps students to improve their writing skill. The students utilized MS Teams to study for at least two hours per day and to discuss with the teacher. In conclusion, the students' perceptions toward the use of MS Teams in online learning showed positive responses.   Keywords: MS Teams, Perception, Writing Skill, EFL, Online Learning

Abstract

Understanding the meaning of a novel need literature study in semantics aspect especially in figurative language. This study aimed to identify and examine the meaning of figure of speech used in the novel The Story of Layla and Majnun Written by Nizami Ganjavi. This study focused on simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, metonymy, synecdoche, and irony form. The data was analyzed by applying descriptive qualitative method. The data collection used was documentation technique. Interactive model data of analysis used to analyze the data. From the result, this study was examined 76 sentences which was contained of figurative language. The data was analyzed one by one to identified the kind of figure of speech used and the meaning of them. The result of this study found 20 simile form, 13 metaphor form, 10 personification, 10 hyperbole form, 12 metonymy form, 3 synecdoche form. The most dominant figurative language used in this novel was form simile (26 %). This novel preserved the Bedouin culture and presented not only a romantic journey of love between humans, but also the Divine Love (Mahabbah). The researcher hope that readers would know about the study of linguistics.
