Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on various aspects of people's lives, including population dynamics. In Makassar City, there has been a significant increase in the birth rate during the pandemic which has posed challenges for the city government. This research aims to analyze how the Makassar City government's policies respond to the increasing birth rate and its impact on society. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with policy analysis based on literature and secondary data. The research results show that the policies implemented during the pandemic have not been fully responsive to community conditions, especially in terms of access to contraceptive services and family planning education. Improvement efforts are needed in planning and implementing population policies during times of crisis so that community welfare is maintained.

Abstract

This qualitative research explores crisis management in the context of Indonesia, focusing on the development of sustainable crisis management strategies for organizations. Against the backdrop of Indonesia's vulnerability to various social, economic, and environmental challenges, this study aims to investigate how organizations navigate crises effectively while considering the social dimension. Employing in-depth interviews, content analysis of relevant documents, and participant observations, the research delves into the experiences of organizations operating in Indonesia during times of crisis. The findings reveal that organizations adopt multifaceted crisis management strategies that not only address the immediate operational aspects but also take into account the socio-cultural context. These strategies involve proactive stakeholder engagement, cultural sensitivity, and community-based approaches to crisis resolution. Moreover, the research uncovers the critical role of leadership and communication in shaping these sustainable crisis management strategies. Ultimately, this study contributes to the broader understanding of crisis management in a social context, providing insights that can inform the development of more resilient and socially responsible crisis management practices for organizations operating in Indonesia and similar contexts.

Abstract

The study examines the role of international organizations, specifically the World Health Organization (WHO), in managing global health security in Africa. It evaluates WHO’s effectiveness, the impact of systemic inequality in resource allocation, and the consequences of delays in decision-making and operational inefficiencies. The research is anchored in regime theory, which explains how international organizations govern global health security through established norms and cooperative frameworks (Krasner, 1983). A qualitative research design was employed, utilizing data from WHO reports, global health indices, and case studies of past health crises, such as Ebola (2014–2016) and COVID-19 (2020–2024). Data were collected from WHO publications, African CDC reports, peer-reviewed journals, and government health statistics.  Findings reveal that WHO plays a pivotal role in disease surveillance, emergency response coordination, and health policy implementation. However, systemic inequalities in funding and material distribution have limited Africa’s ability to respond effectively to health crises. Delays in WHO’s decision-making processes have further exacerbated the impact of pandemics on the continent. Despite these challenges, WHO remains a key institution for strengthening health security, provided that operational inefficiencies are addressed, resource distribution becomes more equitable, and decision-making processes are restructured. The study recommends decentralizing WHO’s regional offices in Africa, improving health equity in resource allocation, and reducing bureaucratic inefficiencies to enhance rapid emergency response. These findings contribute to ongoing policy discussions on global health governance and sustainable health security strategies for Africa.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the most effective learning strategies as perceived by university students. A survey was conducted to assess students’ preferences and perceptions regarding different teaching methods. Findings revealed a strong preference for collaborative learning, with group discussions and project-based learning being the most favored approaches. Students reported that these methods enhanced their understanding of the subject matter and promoted active engagement. While traditional lecture-based methods were also valued, they were generally preferred in conjunction with more interactive strategies. These results suggest that a blended learning approach, combining teacher-centered and student-centered methods, may be most effective in meeting the diverse needs and learning styles of today’s students. Future research could explore the impact of these preferred methods on student achievement and satisfaction.

Abstract

The conflict between the Chinese and indigenous communities in Makassar in 1997 represented a tragedy that reflected long-standing socio-economic and political tensions. This study aims to explore the causes, dynamics, and impacts of the conflict from the perspective of the Chinese community, as well as to seek reconciliation solutions to foster inter-ethnic harmony. Employing a descriptive qualitative method with a historical approach, the research collects data through in-depth interviews with affected members of the Chinese community, complemented by analysis of various written sources. The findings indicate that the conflict was initially triggered by an individual incident that escalated into mass violence, driven by economic inequality, negative stereotypes, and discriminatory policies during the New Order regime. From the Chinese community’s perspective, the conflict reflects a lack of justice and legal protection, underscoring the need for concrete measures to overcome intergroup prejudice. The event caused not only material losses but also deep psychological trauma for the Chinese community. Reconciliation efforts through cross-cultural dialogue, respect for diversity, and social justice are seen as crucial in preventing similar future conflicts. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of inter-ethnic dynamics in Indonesia and supports the application of multicultural values to strengthen national unity.
