Abstract

Waste management remains a major environmental health issue in Indonesia, particularly in rural areas where waste management facilities and environmental education are still limited. This condition may increase the risk of environmental pollution and unhealthy behaviors among school-aged children. This community service program aimed to improve elementary school students’ knowledge regarding the 3R concept (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) through the CERAH program (Smart Counseling on 3R for School Children). The activity was conducted on June 3, 2025, at SD Negeri 7 Lubai Ulu, Muara Enim Regency, South Sumatra, involving 29 fifth-grade students aged 10–12 years. The intervention employed a promotive educational approach using participatory methods, including interactive lectures, PowerPoint presentations, educational posters, 3R-themed songs, ice-breaking activities, and question-and-answer sessions. Evaluation was carried out using pre-test and post-test instruments consisting of five multiple-choice questions to assess students’ knowledge improvement. The results demonstrated a significant increase in students’ understanding after the intervention, as indicated by the improvement in the average score from 2.41 to 4.83, with the Paired Samples T-Test showing a statistically significant difference (p=0.000). In addition, almost all participants were able to answer all post-test questions correctly. This program indicates that environmental education based on visual media and interactive approaches is effective in improving waste management literacy among elementary school students and has the potential to foster environmentally responsible behavior from an early age.

Abstract

The increasing volume of improperly managed household organic waste can lead to environmental pollution and elevate the risk of public health problems, including the proliferation of disease vectors and the deterioration of environmental sanitation quality. This condition was still identified in Menanti Village, Lubai District, where the community, particularly housewives, had limited knowledge and skills regarding household organic waste management. This community service activity aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of housewives in processing organic waste into eco-enzyme as an environmentally friendly and beneficial product. The program was conducted on June 3, 2025, in Menanti Village using an educative-participatory approach through counselling, demonstrations, and hands-on practice in eco-enzyme production. The target participants were housewives recruited through coordination with the village government and local community groups. The activity stages included preparation of materials and educational media, counselling regarding the benefits of eco-enzyme, demonstration of the production process, direct participant practice, and evaluation through skill observation and participant responses. The results showed that participants were able to understand the concept of eco-enzyme, follow the fermentation stages correctly, and independently practice eco-enzyme production using household organic waste. In addition, the activity increased community awareness regarding the importance of environmentally based household waste management and the utilization of organic waste as a value-added product. This activity was effective as a community empowerment effort to support clean and healthy living behaviours and sustainable environmental management at the household level.

Abstract

Drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) remains a major global health challenge with suboptimal treatment success rates. Patients with DR-TB experience not only physical burdens but also significant psychosocial challenges, including stigma, adverse drug effects, and limited social support. Family support plays a crucial role in improving treatment adherence; however, in many settings, such support is not yet structured or systematically implemented. Therefore, a family-based intervention is needed to strengthen support for DR-TB patients. This community-based program employed a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test approach. The participants consisted of four DR-TB patients and their primary family caregivers in the working area of the Sleman District Health Office, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. A total sampling technique was applied due to the limited population. The intervention included education, counseling, and family mentoring using a flipchart-based educational tool developed based on the Health Belief Model (HBM). Data were collected using structured questionnaires to assess patients’ knowledge and family support before and after the intervention, complemented by observational data. Most patients had a body mass index below 18.5 and experienced multiple adverse drug effects, including nausea, vomiting, gastrointestinal disturbances, and psychological symptoms. Half of the patients reported experiencing social stigma. Baseline assessment showed that 25% of participants had low knowledge, 50% moderate, and 25% high. Following the intervention, there was a noticeable improvement in patients’ and families’ knowledge regarding DR-TB management, family roles, treatment adherence, and coping strategies. Increased family involvement in supporting patients during treatment was also observed. The findings highlight that psychosocial factors, such as stigma, adverse drug effects, and poor nutritional status, significantly influence treatment outcomes in DR-TB patients. The family-based mentoring approach, supported by educational media, effectively improved knowledge and motivation. This approach aligns with the patient-centered care model, emphasizing the importance of family engagement in enhancing adherence and preventing treatment default. Family-based mentoring using flipchart media is effective in improving knowledge and strengthening family support for DR-TB patients. This intervention has the potential to enhance treatment adherence and improve patients’ quality of life. Sustainable programs involving healthcare providers, community health workers, and family engagement, along with innovative educational media, are recommended to strengthen psychosocial support and reduce stigma in the community.

Abstract

The increasing volume of organic waste in Bantul Regency has become a critical environmental and public health issue, particularly due to the limited capacity of the Piyungan Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST). This condition has led to waste accumulation at the community level, including in Dusun Gatak, posing risks to environmental quality and public health. This community service program aimed to enhance community capacity in managing organic waste through a maggot-based approach using community empowerment strategies. The intervention employed a participatory community empowerment model, consisting of initial engagement, Community Self Survey (CSS), training, and mentoring stages. The target participants included local residents, community cadres, youth organizations, and fish farming groups. Evaluation was conducted using pre-test and post-test assessments as well as participatory observation. The results showed a CSS response rate of 66%, indicating that most households had not yet managed organic waste effectively. The training program significantly improved participants’ knowledge, as reflected by an increase in average scores from 60 to 85. Maggot-based waste processing was selected as the preferred method due to its practicality and economic potential as an alternative fish feed. Initial implementation demonstrated early adoption of maggot cultivation at the household level. This program contributed to improving community knowledge, skills, and early behavioral changes in organic waste management. Furthermore, the intervention supports environmental sanitation improvement and local economic strengthening. Continuous monitoring and program expansion are recommended to ensure sustainability and scalability in similar contexts.

Abstract

Household organic waste remains an environmental health issue in Ngoto, Bantul, characterized by low levels of waste segregation and processing practices. This community service aimed to improve community knowledge and skills in managing organic waste through composting using a community empowerment approach. A participatory approach was implemented through four stages (L1–L4): problem identification, Community Self Survey (CSS), workshop-based cadre training, and community dissemination. The CSS involved ?50 households to identify priority problems. Training was conducted with 10 community cadres using pretest–posttest and skills observation. The CSS revealed that most households had not practiced proper waste segregation and organic waste processing. Training results showed an increase in knowledge, indicated by higher posttest scores compared to pretest scores. Participants also demonstrated the ability to perform composting independently. The dissemination stage indicated knowledge transfer to the broader community and the emergence of initial behavioral changes in organic waste management. A cadre-based community empowerment approach is effective in improving knowledge and skills in organic waste management and has the potential to promote sustainable behavioral change at the community level.
