Abstract

Waste management remains a major environmental health issue in Indonesia, particularly in rural areas where waste management facilities and environmental education are still limited. This condition may increase the risk of environmental pollution and unhealthy behaviors among school-aged children. This community service program aimed to improve elementary school students’ knowledge regarding the 3R concept (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) through the CERAH program (Smart Counseling on 3R for School Children). The activity was conducted on June 3, 2025, at SD Negeri 7 Lubai Ulu, Muara Enim Regency, South Sumatra, involving 29 fifth-grade students aged 10–12 years. The intervention employed a promotive educational approach using participatory methods, including interactive lectures, PowerPoint presentations, educational posters, 3R-themed songs, ice-breaking activities, and question-and-answer sessions. Evaluation was carried out using pre-test and post-test instruments consisting of five multiple-choice questions to assess students’ knowledge improvement. The results demonstrated a significant increase in students’ understanding after the intervention, as indicated by the improvement in the average score from 2.41 to 4.83, with the Paired Samples T-Test showing a statistically significant difference (p=0.000). In addition, almost all participants were able to answer all post-test questions correctly. This program indicates that environmental education based on visual media and interactive approaches is effective in improving waste management literacy among elementary school students and has the potential to foster environmentally responsible behavior from an early age.

Abstract

The increasing volume of improperly managed household organic waste can lead to environmental pollution and elevate the risk of public health problems, including the proliferation of disease vectors and the deterioration of environmental sanitation quality. This condition was still identified in Menanti Village, Lubai District, where the community, particularly housewives, had limited knowledge and skills regarding household organic waste management. This community service activity aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of housewives in processing organic waste into eco-enzyme as an environmentally friendly and beneficial product. The program was conducted on June 3, 2025, in Menanti Village using an educative-participatory approach through counselling, demonstrations, and hands-on practice in eco-enzyme production. The target participants were housewives recruited through coordination with the village government and local community groups. The activity stages included preparation of materials and educational media, counselling regarding the benefits of eco-enzyme, demonstration of the production process, direct participant practice, and evaluation through skill observation and participant responses. The results showed that participants were able to understand the concept of eco-enzyme, follow the fermentation stages correctly, and independently practice eco-enzyme production using household organic waste. In addition, the activity increased community awareness regarding the importance of environmentally based household waste management and the utilization of organic waste as a value-added product. This activity was effective as a community empowerment effort to support clean and healthy living behaviours and sustainable environmental management at the household level.

Abstract

Smoking behavior among adolescents is one of the public health problems that can increase the risk of health disorders and unhealthy lifestyles. Community assessment findings in RW 09, Krajan Hamlet, Sukorambi Village, indicated a high prevalence of smoking behavior among adolescents, highlighting the need for health education interventions. This community service program aimed to improve adolescents’ knowledge regarding the dangers of smoking through the health education program entitled “Let’s Live Healthy Without Smoking.” The activity was conducted in RW 09, Krajan Hamlet, Sukorambi Village, Jember Regency, targeting 70 adolescents aged 13–20 years. The intervention methods included lectures, interactive discussions, and the distribution of educational leaflets and posters concerning the harmful effects of smoking and smoking cessation tips. Program evaluation was carried out using pretest and posttest questionnaires to assess participants’ knowledge before and after the health education intervention. The results demonstrated an increase in adolescents’ knowledge regarding the dangers of smoking following the educational intervention, with an improvement of 43.5%. This health education activity can serve as a promotive and preventive effort to enhance adolescent health literacy and support the development of healthy lifestyle behaviors within the community.
