Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem that can hinder children’s growth and development. This study was conducted to determine the relationship between exclusive breastfeeding, dietary diversity, and parenting practices and the prevalence of stunting among toddlers in the service area of the Penana’e Community Health Center. This study used a quantitative analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample size for this study was 78 toddlers selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected via questionnaires and anthropometric measurements, then analyzed using the Chi-Square test and Fisher’s Exact Test. The results showed that 38 toddlers (48.7%) were classified as stunted, while 40 toddlers (51.3%) were not stunted. The majority of respondents had a history of insufficient exclusive breastfeeding (57.7%), insufficient dietary diversity (53.8%), and parenting practices classified as good (94.9%). The results of the analysis show that exclusive breastfeeding is not significantly associated with the incidence of stunting, with a p-value of 0.672. Similarly, dietary diversity does not show a significant association with the incidence of stunting, with a p-value of 0.807, and parenting practices are also not significantly associated with the incidence of stunting, with a p-value of 0.352. Thus, it can be concluded that exclusive breastfeeding, dietary diversity, and parenting practices do not have a statistically significant association with the incidence of stunting in toddlers.

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem among toddlers, characterized by impaired height-for-age growth. The occurrence of stunting can be influenced by various factors, including the quality of care, adequate nutritional intake, and the family’s socioeconomic status. This study aims to determine the relationship between parenting practices, nutritional intake, and socioeconomic status with the prevalence of stunting among children aged 24–59 months in the service area of the Penanae Community Health Center, Bima City. This study employed a quantitative approach with an analytical observational design and a cross-sectional method. The sample consisted of 78 toddlers selected using simple random sampling, comprising 39 toddlers in the stunting group and 39 toddlers in the non-stunting group. Data were collected through interviews using a questionnaire on parenting practices and socioeconomic status, nutritional intake measurements using the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), and height measurements based on the height-for-age (H/A) indicator. Data analysis was performed using the chi-square test and logistic regression. The results showed an association between parenting practices (p<0.001), nutritional intake (p=0.002), and socioeconomic status (p=0.042) and the incidence of stunting. Multivariate analysis showed that parenting practices were the most influential factor on the incidence of stunting, with an OR of 6.318 (95% CI: 2.104–18.973; p=0.001) Based on the research findings, improving the quality of child-rearing practices, meeting nutritional needs, and providing support for families’ economic conditions should be considered as measures to prevent stunting in toddlers.

Abstract

Toddlers are a vulnerable group at risk of nutritional problems. One of the nutritional issues affecting toddlers is stunting. Several factors contribute to stunting, including mothers' knowledge of nutrition, Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS), and attendance at integrated health service posts (Posyandu). This study aimed to determine the relationship between mothers' nutritional knowledge, PHBS behavior, and Posyandu attendance with the incidence of stunting. This study employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. Samples were selected using purposive sampling, involving 44 toddlers in Tarlawi Village. Stunting data were obtained through height-for-age (H/A) measurements, while data on mothers' nutritional knowledge, PHBS behavior, and Posyandu attendance were collected using questionnaires. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test. The results of the association analysis showed that there was no significant relationship between mothers' nutritional knowledge and stunting among children aged 24–59 months (p = 0.680 > 0.05), nor between Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS) and stunting (p = 1.000 > 0.05). However, there was a significant relationship between Posyandu attendance and stunting (p < 0.001). There was no significant relationship between mothers' nutritional knowledge and the incidence of stunting among children aged 24–59 months in Tarlawi Village. Likewise, there was no significant relationship between Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS) and the incidence of stunting among children aged 24–59 months in Tarlawi Village. However, there was a significant relationship between Posyandu attendance and the incidence of stunting among children aged 24–59 months in Tarlawi Village.

Abstract

Stunting remains a major public health and nutritional problem affecting children worldwide, including Indonesia. Stunting is a condition of impaired growth resulting from chronic malnutrition and recurrent infections, characterized by a height-for-age index below the standard established by the World Health Organization (WHO). Parenting practices and adequate animal protein intake are important factors influencing child growth and development. Inadequate caregiving and insufficient consumption of animal-source foods may increase the risk of stunting among children under five years of age. This study aims to analyze the relationship between parenting practices and animal protein intake with the incidence of stunting among children aged 24–59 months in the working area of Woha Public Health Center, Bima Regency. The study will employ an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The population consists of 399 children aged 24–59 months, and a sample of 80 respondents will be selected using simple random sampling based on the Slovin formula with a 10% margin of error. Data on parenting practices and animal protein intake will be collected through structured questionnaires, while stunting status will be determined using anthropometric measurements based on the Height-for-Age Z-score (HAZ) indicator. Data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Chi-Square test to determine the relationship between variables. The findings of this study are expected to provide scientific evidence regarding the influence of parenting practices and animal protein intake on stunting incidence and serve as a reference for developing nutrition and child health intervention programs aimed at reducing stunting prevalence in the Woha Public Health Center area.
