Abstract

This article presents an assessment of the implementation of flipped classrooms and the use of Edpuzzle for this purpose. Four elementary schools engaging in the School Transformation Programme 2025 (TS25) across various subject areas were included in the study. As part of this programme, teachers received training in pedagogical and technological knowledge. A mixed-methods design was employed to collect and analyse both quantitative and qualitative data. The findings indicate that teachers demonstrated a strong understanding of the pupil-centred concept in the flipped classroom model. However, while teachers universally used Edpuzzle for pre-class activities, there is a need for them to fully leverage its features and enhance creativity to develop more engaging video quizzes.

Abstract

The growth of English language learning in Pesantren (Islamic Boarding School) leads to a challenge as the subject contains the culture of target language. Integrating English language instruction into traditional Pesantren education requires a comprehensive understanding to avoid conflicts with religious values and traditional pedagogical methods. There are cultural constraints as human relationships in Pesantren based on social hierarchies which embed the philosophy of “total obedience” affecting the students who tend to be less engaged with the material and less motivated to express their thought. Therefore, this paper explains teaching culture at English language learning in Pesantren in Indonesia. This conceptual paper aims at designing the material and teaching plan of English learning for the students at the age of the first year of secondary school. They share the same culture as the Javanese ethnic group, with the same local and national language. Their level of CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is A2 - Elementary English as they have been learning English since the late year of primary schools. The sequence of tasks in cultural teaching in English language teaching comprises of four stages; preparation, collection, implementation and reflection stage.

Abstract

Building strong listening skills is crucial for academic and social success, but many teachers struggle with teaching this skill. To address this, websites like www.123listening.com provide resources and activities to improve listening skills. This study is aimed to find out the impact of listening material from www.123listening.com in teaching listening. The participants of this study were fourth grade students of SDN 1 Botomulyo which consisted of 28 students. Quantitative research designs were applied with test and questionnaire as the instruments to obtaining the data. Pre-test and post-test data were analysed statistically using SPSS while the questionnaire results were analysed descriptively. The result of the post-test showed that students’ scores were getting higher after learning about listening skill using material from www.123listening.com. It means that the use of material from www.123listening.com is effective in teaching listening. Whereas based on the questionnaire, most students felt very enjoyable on the learning. It implies that technology platforms can be alternative learning strategy for teachers to enhance students’ language skills and enthusiasm in learning.

Abstract

This study investigated the approach used by English teachers to promote Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) during the learning process. The Indonesian government, specifically the Ministry of Education and Culture, has taken the lead in implementing the Merdeka Curriculum, a curriculum designed to prepare students for the 5.0 era of society. The objective of this curriculum is to develop students who have the Profil Pelajar Pancasila, equipping them with the ability to use their knowledge and abilities effectively in practical circumstances. To achieve this, teachers must employ specific methodologies that enhance students' critical thinking abilities. focused on thirteen English senior high school teachers in Pekalongan Regency, with two selected for interviews and observations. Data were collected through a questionnaire, interviews, and direct observation. The data analysis involved quantifying the questionnaire responses, evaluating the open-ended questionnaire responses, and reviewing the transcripts from the interviews and classroom observation notes. Thematic analysis was used to interpret the data from interviews and classroom observation, while coding was employed to extract the transcripts and observation notes. The study revealed that the strategies used by Merdeka Curriculum teachers were project-based learning and open-ended questioning. However, some teachers faced challenges in implementing these strategies in English classes, such as students' skill levels, teachers' expertise, and negative perceptions.

Abstract

The ability that students must have in the 21st-century learning era is mathematical literacy. Generally, the selection and use of inappropriate textbooks is a factor in low mathematical literacy. The research aims to determine the effectiveness of using modules based on the Missouri Mathematics Project model in improving students' mathematical literacy. The type of research used is quantitative, using a one-shot case study. The participants of this study were 27 lower secondary students. The results showed that the module based on the Missouri Mathematics Project model could improve mathematical literacy with a classical completeness of 96%. Additionally, it can be interpreted from a one-sided t-test that the module based on the Missouri Mathematics Project (MMP) model is effective in improving students' mathematical literacy. The findings can assist educators in effectively utilising the modules based on the Missouri Mathematics Project model and its integration into their teaching practices.
